Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake — Everything We Know

It’s official. Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake is coming soon to PS5, Xbox, and PC platforms. The Metal Gear Solid franchise is a giant in the gaming industry. The series released its first entry as early as 1998. Now, there have been over 15 Metal Gear Solid games in 30 years. Most of which exude some of the best writing and environments ever designed.

Sure, Metal Gear Survive didn’t quite hit the mark. But 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remains an icon. Everything from the graphics, gameplay, storyline, and characters far exceeded expectations. It was the perfect entry that pushed PS2’s limits as far as possible.

If you missed out on the original, don’t worry. You can relive a refined experience in the new remake called “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.” To prepare for launch, here's the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake – Everything We Know article for details about the release date, gameplay, story, and more.

What is Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake?

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake — Everything We Know

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake is an upcoming action-adventure stealth remake of the original 2004 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater game. However, instead of a generic name, Konami is planning to release the remake under the official name: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Rather than completely overhauling the original, Konami is planning to use the same core structure as the original. So, the graphics, story, environment, gameplay, and even the voice actors like David Hayter will remain the same. The only thing that will change is refreshing these elements to modern standards, including incorporating 3D sound and next-generation graphics.

This is the idea behind the term “delta,” (the green triangle). According to Metal Gear’s official Twitter, the delta means “difference” or “change.” Konami chose to use the delta symbol in the remake’s name because it explains the concept of the project. The only key difference the remake makes is to evolve the gameplay by adding stunning visuals and a seamless user experience. Otherwise, it doesn’t alter the core structure of the original’s story and game design.

Story

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake — Everything We Know

As of now, we don’t know much about the remake’s storyline, except that it will retain the same story and dialogue as the original. So, the remake will likely maintain the same setting in the 1960s era. This is the prequel era of the Metal Gear series that tells the origin story of Big Boss. Fan-favorite operative, Naked Snake, will also play a key role.

Gameplay

Like the story, we don’t know much about the gameplay, except that the remake will maintain the same environment and game design as the original. Konami has gone as far as to use the word “delta” to describe the remake. That it will maintain the core structure of the original, save for changes in the user experience. These changes will include evolving the gameplay using stunning visuals and a seamless playthrough. If recent successful remakes like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 are anything to go by, MGS: Snake Eater Remake will likely feature updated gameplay and graphics that compete favorably with modern games.

Development

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake

As of 2023’s PlayStation Showcase event, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake is in development. The development team confirms that title will be a faithful recreation of the original 2004 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater game. Their focus is to adopt the same story and environment fans fell in love with in the original. However, they plan to brush up on the gameplay, visuals, and user experience to match modern standards. It’s nearly how the Resident Evil 4 remake elevated the experience to compete with the games of today while still maintaining the core gameplay aspects of the original game. Hopefully, the remake pleases just as much as Resident Evil 4 did.

Besides Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake, it looks like Konami will be keeping us busy with the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1 and Silent Hill remakes. The collection will include three games namely, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Additionally, Konami is also working on the Silent Hill franchise, specifically the Silent Hill 2 remake. So, even though the Snake Eater remake takes a while to hit the stands, it’s good to know we can access updated versions of other Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill titles in the meantime.

Trailer

Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater Remake Official Trailer

During the 2023 PlayStation Showcase event, Konami revealed the debut announcement trailer for the Snake Eater remake. In the trailer, we see cinematic teasers of a jungle crawling with vicious animals. Naked Snake gets screen time, too. However, he has a makeover, which is to be expected in a remake.

Release Date, Editions & Platforms

At the moment, we don’t have the actual release date yet. During the 2023 PlayStation Showcase event, Konami announced the development of the remake. However, the announcement didn’t confirm anything about when the game would launch. So, besides knowing Konami is working on it, there isn’t much else to unpack. All the announcement did was inform us to expect the remake sometime in the future. However, since Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1 is scheduled to release sometime later this year, we speculate that the remake will probably release sometime in 2024, or even early 2025.

As far as editions and platforms are concerned, we don’t know yet which editions will be made available at launch. However, we do know that the remake was announced as a PS5 title at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase event. Later, Konami confirmed that they would also release it on Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms.
