High on Life: Best Gear, Mods & Upgrades

Published

 on

I'd be lying if I said High on Life is a lot like most traditional first-person shooters. Truth is, Blim City and the G3 cartel are among some of the strangest things I have ever witnessed in a video game. And that's saying something, given how I binged Adult Swim's Rick & Morty in its entirety to prepare for the atrocities Squanch Games spread out for me. Turned out, though, nothing was ever going to prep these weary eyes for the alien-themed hallucinations that followed suit in Mark Roiland's...experiment.

Fortunately, High on Life does have its fair share of familiarities, such as weapons, upgrades, and gear. As far as the loadout goes, not a whole lot is different, other than the one or two items that are, I don't know, questionable at best. What I was able to find out, though, were the upgrades that made the campaign a whole lot easier to traverse and master. And so, if you happen to be in a similar situation and aren't overly sure what to purchase in Blim City's pawnshop, then read on. Here are the best upgrades, mods, and gear loadouts in High on Life.

5. Durahealth

Xbox and Bethesda Showcase Games

One of the first things you'll want to do in Blim City is purchase Durahealth, a stackable item that will boost your maximum heath points. As it stands, there are three to purchase from the local pawnshop, coming in at 1000 Pesos apiece. As luck would have it, the three available packs can be bought immediately, which means there's no quest-related preliminaries involved. You will, of course, need to compete one or two bounties to acquire the funds for them, though.

Depending on the difficulty you're playing on, bounties can be pretty tough, and can even take their toll on you if you aren't suited and booted in your fineries. To avoid reaching such a molehill, you should aim to purchase all three Durahealth upgrades before starting the third bounty contract. If you can help it, try and dig around Blim City and crack the fleshy treasure chests for more Pesos before heading out on your next quest.

4. Muscle Implant

Kenny, the first Gatlian you acquire in High on Life, will be with you from the beginning of the campaign to the very end, which means you'll need every upgrade available to maximize his power. For starters, you're going to want to save up 1500 Pesos to purchase the Muscle Implant upgrade, which basically boosts Kenny's firepower for a more effective shot against targets.

Of course, with a number of other Gatlians available to buy for, it can be tempting to favor another over the bog-standard talking pistol. But, without throwing in any spoilers, there are in fact sections in the campaign that involve just you and Kenny as your only companion. Therefore, if you have the cash to spare, then aim to keep Kenny in mind as you browse for weapon upgrades, as you're going to need him at his best for later on in the story.

3. Remote Detonator Mod

The third Gatlian you unlock in High on Life, Sweezy, serves as an automatic machine gun, which again, can be extremely useful in sticky situations involving large amounts of G3 soldiers. One of the most efficient ways of eliminating large batches of G3 is to equip the Remote Detonator Mod, which allows you to remotely detonate Sweezy's fired crystals out on the battlefield.

It goes like this: Sweezy can unload a huge clip of purple shards on enemies, which inflict damage on their own. By adding the Remote Detonator Mod, you can force the shards you've already fired to explode, which can wreak havoc across the entire battlefield and transform it into a blazing inferno. Ideally, you'll want to use this quality perk when invading G3 bases, and when up against enemies with large hitboxes. You can purchase the add-on for 1500 Pesos.

2. Heartsap Mod

Creature, a conflicted Gatlian with an infinite number of offspring attached to his fleshy surface, can be one of your go-to weapons in any given battle—even more so when the Heartsap Mod is added on. Thanks to this rather pricey perk, you can not only send said offspring out to damage enemies, but also have them return to you with either free gifts, or additional health points to help get you back on your feet.

Of course, depending on the order you take on the bounty contracts, you may not receive Creature until fairly later on in the story. If you can set aside 1600 Pesos as a precaution, though, then you'll have the option to buy one of the best Mods in the game just as soon as he becomes available. And honestly, it's a perk well worth buying, especially if you're planning on ramping up the difficulty and going up against some of the tougher bosses.

1. Reload Tract

Wanting a faster reload time in a game that's in favor of high-octane combat and disadvantageous battles isn't exactly a huge ask. Fortunately for up-and-coming Bounty Hunters, High on Life opens its doors to such perks, which in turn allows you to dish out more bullets without wasting extra time on switching rounds. The only downside to this is that the perk must be purchased for each individual Gatlian, rather than as an all-in-one add-on.

It's a pricey venture, but one that's definitely worth embarking on if you're planning on spending more time eliminating more enemies and less on actively reloading talkative guns. To start, aim to kit Kenny out with the Reload Tract, as this will be the Gatlian you'll end up using the most. Once obtained, work towards getting all of your Gatlians loaded up with the same perk to boost your overall reload time.
