Gotham Knights: 5 Things You Should Know

 on

Gotham Knights is an upcoming third-person beat 'em up action-adventure game by WB Games Montréal, the same studio that helped shape some of the critically acclaimed Batman Arkham games alongside Rocksteady Studios back in 2013.

With only a few short weeks left until launch, fans are beginning to brush up on the game's finer details and all the relevant information. And so, if you, like the vast majority of eager beaver players, are keen to know the ins and outs of the upcoming chapter, then look no further. Here is everything you need to know about Gotham Knights.

5. Batman Is Dead

Gotham Knights - World Premiere Trailer

Contrary to popular belief, Gotham Knights is not a sequel to Rocksteady Studios' Batman Arkham saga. It is, in essence, a standalone entry that sees the DC underdogs — hereinafter referred to as the Gotham Knights — holding up Bruce Wayne's vow to keep Gotham safe during the immediate aftermath of his and police commissioner James Gordon's deaths.

Gotham Knights will shift its focus over to four new heroes, which will ultimately form the titular collective of, well, Gotham Knights. As such, players are invited to fill the boots of Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood, all of whom will band together to uphold the city's justice system and drive back the sudden incline in criminal activity.

4. Is Gotham Knights Open World?

Gotham Knights

Yes, Gotham Knights is an open world game. Similar to Arkham Origins, one of WB Games' previous works, players will have the opportunity to zip and swing around the shadowy districts of Gotham as one of four characters: Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, or Red Hood. It hasn't been confirmed whether the new iteration of Gotham City will be as large as Arkham City's portrayal, though.

Like before, Gotham City will host a variety of side activities outside of its main storyline. These activities are likely to range from gang brawls, district-wide takeovers, and collecting a slew of collectibles that will both aid your progression and each character's private loadout. True to the open world format, players can expect a lot more in-game side quests and challenges than your bog-standard single-player linear title.

3. Is Gotham Knights Multiplayer?

Gotham Knights can be played offline as well as online via its two-player co-op mode. This means you can play through the game as your favorite hero, as well as invite a friend to drop in at any given time to aid you with any open quests or challenges that you may or may not have in your log. You do not need to be connected to the internet to play Gotham Knights solobut you will if you plan on booting up a co-op game.

At the time of writing, Gotham Knights only hosts a two-player option, though it has been said that WB Games Montréal could be stepping into the four-player world at some point in the future. For now, though, it's very much the case of being a one or two player game. You also cannot play local split-screen co-op, meaning the only way to get your multiplayer kicks is through its online counterpart.

2. Gotham City's Heroes & Villains

So we're already well aware that Gotham Knights will feature Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood. But what about the villains? Well, according to WB Games Montréal, the overarching threat will be The Court of Owls, which is a secret underground order that pulls the strings on Gotham's criminal activity. As well as this, the Knights will also have to face a nexus of familiar DC villains, including a fresh-faced Harley Quinn.

From what we've seen so far, Gotham Knights will host Mr. Freeze, The Penguin, Clayface, Talon, Harley Quinn, and Professor Pyg as its primary antagonists. It's unclear whether or not Joker will reprise his role in the new venture, though fans have suggested that the notorious sociopath could pop up at some point in the near future, if not in the base game, then in some form of DLC. WB Games Montréal has yet to confirm this, so it's worth taking the rumors with a grain of salt at this stage in time.

1. Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Gotham Knights

WB Games' Gotham Knights is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 21, 2022. At the time of writing, the game will not launch on Xbox Game Pass, Game Pass Ultimate, PlayStation Plus Extra, or PlayStation Plus Premium as a day one exclusive. At present, though, the game is only available to pre-order.

Speaking of pre-orders, you can pick up Gotham Knights in one of three editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Collector's Edition. At the time of writing, the PC edition is significantly cheaper, with the Standard Edition costing $69.99 on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and $59.99 on PC.
