God of War Laufey Delayed to May 2027 for Finishing Touches
Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027, moving the PlayStation 5 game from its previously announced February 16, 2027 launch. The studio published the release-date update on November 4, 2026, after pre-orders had already begun.
The studio’s explanation focused on the remaining development work:
“We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.”
The team thanked players for their response to Faye’s journey since the game’s reveal, acknowledged the trust placed in the studio and appreciated their patience. Santa Monica Studio also promised to return with more updates.
Pre-Orders Were Already Open
Grace Orlady, communications director at Santa Monica Studio, had detailed the original PS5 launch plan on PlayStation Blog on September 28, 2026. Pre-orders opened at 10:00 a.m. local time on September 29, 2026, so the delay arrived after players had been invited to buy the game ahead of launch.
The announced pre-order bonuses were the Last Wish Armor Set, a cosmetic Phranque Golden Leaves appearance and an in-game resource pack. Because purchasing had already opened, the new date changes an active sales campaign as well as the development schedule.
The Game Behind the New Date
The June 2, 2026 reveal introduced God of War Laufey as the next mainline entry in the series. Faye, also called Laufey, is a warrior and Kratos’s wife. She awakens unexpectedly after her funeral and discovers that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk.
The game’s setting is the Everywhen, an afterlife of the gods and the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns. Gods and creatures from different mythologies meet there, while the natural flow of magic has been disrupted. Faye must uncover the realm’s mysteries if she is to find a way home.
Deborah Ann Woll reprises Faye after appearing in God of War Ragnarök. Jack Quaid plays Phranque, a cosmic cube determined to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen, while Perlina Lau plays Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping a devastatingly powerful sword from falling into the wrong hands. The two companions meet Faye shortly after she wakes and join her journey.
Combat Built Around Movement and Souls
The broader design combines the movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era’s approach to world-building and close character relationships. Faye can move between the ground and air without stopping the action, with her mobility supplying offensive and defensive options during battles.
Her sword combat is built around speed, control and maintaining momentum from one attack to the next. Her soul-related abilities are also amplified in the Everywhen: a strike from her golden palm can detach an enemy’s soul, which players can then attack directly or knock into other enemies as part of combos.
For players who pre-ordered, the delay turns an already-detailed launch plan into a longer wait. The studio has kept its explanation focused on finishing the game, making its promised updates the next opportunity to see how Faye’s combat and journey through the Everywhen are coming together ahead of release.
