ESL FACEIT Group Announces ESL One Munich 2027 Dota 2 Tournament
ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) announced on October 29, 2026 that ESL One, its flagship Dota 2 tournament series, will travel to Munich, Germany, on April 4–11, 2027, where 16 teams will compete for $1,000,000 in total winnings at BMW Park.
The main event will be played in front of a live audience on the arena days of April 9–11, 2027, inside BMW Park. EFG said the arena’s state-of-the-art interactive LED flooring will anchor a fan-first live experience for thousands of attendees in the venue and millions more watching worldwide.
EFG positioned ESL One Munich 2027 as the premier midseason event and the crown jewel of the Dota 2 calendar, with the $1,000,000 pool described as the largest of the ESL Pro Tour season. The company also described the tournament as the most crucial qualifier event on the road to the Esports World Cup.
Tobias Fjellander, Senior Product Manager, Dota 2 at ESL FACEIT Group, addressed the series’ history in the announcement.
“ESL One has a long history of bringing the world’s best Dota 2 teams and fans together, and we’re excited to add Munich to that legacy,” Fjellander said.
Fjellander said the venue opens up new production possibilities for how the company presents Dota 2, while the tournament maintains the level of competition and live experience fans expect from ESL One. He added that EFG wants to carry the momentum from ESL One Birmingham, staged earlier in 2026, into Munich and welcome the community there in 2027.
The announcement also included statements from Bavarian and Munich officials.
“In April 2027, Munich will become the beating heart of the global Dota 2 community,” said Dr. Fabian Mehring, Bavarian State Minister for Digital Affairs. “We’re thrilled to welcome ESL One and the world’s top teams to Bavaria!”
Mehring said esports extends beyond gaming, describing it as a mix of teamwork, strategy and rapid decision-making that connects people regardless of borders, language or culture. He said Bavaria, which he called Germany’s leading games hub, is investing in gaming’s future and supports esports clubs and major events.
Dr. Christian Scharpf, Head of the Department of Labor and Economic Development for the City of Munich, also welcomed the event. He said Munich combines a strong technology sector that hosts major global corporations with a sports venue of long standing, describing the city as well suited to stage esports. He added that Munich looks forward to welcoming fans, whether they follow their favorite teams live at BMW Park or watch via livestream.
The ESL One Series
EFG describes ESL One as the premier event series on the Dota 2 calendar, second only to the world championship, with broadcasts in more than 15 languages across more than 60 channels globally. The company said the Munich tournament continues a decade-long heritage of filling stadiums and delivering record-breaking viewership across the globe.
