Dynasty Warriors: Origins — Everything We Know

The Dynasty Warriors series has given us quite a number of fun hack-and-slash games. They’re based on the classic Chinese novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and have maintained a relatively consistent stream of releases since 1997. The last entry, Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires, was released in 2022, and now, we can look forward to yet another new game that takes us back to the start.

Get ready to slay thousands of enemies in a one-man fight for freedom. That’s right. Dynasty Warriors: Origins brings back the fantastic 1v1000 action that made the series popular. Only this time, the armies you’ll be fighting against are much more vicious than ever before. Stick around to learn everything we know about the upcoming game, Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

What is Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is an upcoming action RPG hack-and-slash game set in feudal China. It’ll bring back the series’ popular 1v1000 action. Dynasty Warriors: Origins follows an unnamed hero. Having an unnamed hero could mean that you can create and customize your own character to your liking. In any case, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is preparing to pit you against the largest army the series has ever seen.

Story

Two fractions barred with wall

At the start of the Dynasty Warriors series, there is the fall of the Three Kingdoms. Chaos erupts all across the world as the Three Kingdoms’ warlords continue to be at each other’s throats. Amid the conflict, a nameless hero rises whose mission is to take charge and seize control over the Three Kingdoms.

You’ll play the role of the unnamed hero, taking on thousands of enemies. This is, perhaps, the biggest change Dynasty Warriors: Origins will bring to the series. Before, you needed to control a fantasy version of a historical figure. However, for this time in the series, you get to play a “nameless hero.”

It’s highly likely that controlling a new character will change how the campaign unfolds. After all, you’ll be reliving the war from a new perspective. More excitingly, you may be able to create your own characters and even customize them how you want.

For now, the details of how the protagonist will fit into the story remain under wraps. However, you can expect to fight in battles that will stretch all across an expansive ancient China, with the soldiers and generals you fight against drawing inspiration from China’s historical tales of war.

Gameplay

Dynasty Warriors: Origins takes us back to the thrilling and invigorating 1v1000 gameplay. Thanks to the PS5’s powerful hardware, it will craft all-new Warriors-like battlefield arenas. Enemies will be in the thousands, stretching farther out than the eye can see. Yet, it’ll be up to you to swiftly and masterfully take them down.

Even with the overwhelming opposition of enemies, Dynasty Warriors: Origins will craft a fast-paced combat system that sees you acting fast and with force to survive. But you will also have allies in your corner. You can coordinate with ally enemies, which will infuse tactical combat to achieve victory.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins promises the most intense experience. Dynasty Warriors 9 (2018) was released to negative reviews, and Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires (2022) received mixed reviews. Here’s to hoping the game delivers on its promise of battlefield prowess.

Development

Developer Omega Force, in collaboration with publisher Koei Tecmo, is currently working on Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The first announcement of the game’s development was made at the PlayStation State of Play Showcase 2024 event, much to the welcome surprise of fans.

As the name suggests, the game will take us to the origins of the Dynasty Warriors saga. However, the fresh start isn’t just restricted to the game, but the developer, too. Alongside a new Lego, Omega Force is taking a leap of faith, pouring devotion into the new game that will redefine the expectations we’ve come to bear for the series.

“I am certain that in this game, we will deliver a most excellent experience that we were not able to accomplish in the series until now, carving out a new history for both Dynasty Warriors and Omega Force!” says Tomohiko Sho, the Producer of Dynasty Warriors: Origins and Head of Omega Force, Koei Tecmo Games. The statement raises even more expectations for what’s to come.

The original Dynasty Warriors was a fighting game. However, Dynasty Warriors 2 and the games that followed capitalized on realistic battlefield simulation and the intensity of 1v1000 gameplay. With Origins, the developing team aims to go back to these roots that fans have come to love.
