Disney Lorcana: Everything We Know

Given the fact that trading cards have a combined estimated worth of over $6B, it does come as a slight surprise that Disney hasn’t taken advantage of the format until now. Needless to say that its upcoming TCG, Disney Lorcana, will surely alter that position, and will, at least by the end of 2023, be one with the ever-evolving kingdom of deck building and all its glossy goodness.

In spite of the upcoming card game being somewhat fashionably late to the party, Disney does have one thing in its favor: its timeless catalog of characters, tales, and worlds. Knowing this, and more importantly, how no other media giant in the world could ever dare touch Disney’s legacy with a barge pole does, of course, put Lorcana in a pretty strong position ready for its eventual launch. But what else do we know about it?

What Is Disney Lorcana?

Disney Lorcana is an upcoming trading card game by Ravensburger, a globally renowned game publisher that’s been hashing out puzzles, trading cards, and board games for the best part of forty years. Much like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon, the idea is to not only collect cards that vary in skills and rarity, but use them to battle against other players. This is all textbook deck building malarkey, and it goes without saying that any Disney-Pixar addict will want in on its treasure trove of clean-cut collectibles when it drops later this year.

“As an Illumineer, you’ll wield six magical inks to summon glimmers of Disney characters,” the official blurb reads in part. “Glimmers can appear as familiar friends or in fantastically reimagined forms. Recruit glimmers to your team as you travel through the world of Lorcana.”

Gameplay

Gameplay details have been kept well and truly under wraps since Disney Lorcana first popped its head up last year. Fortunately, though, this is a bread and butter trading card game, which means we already have a vague idea of what to expect come launch day. And if you just happen to be new to the TCG realm, then it goes a little something like this: two players bring their own decks to a battlefield, each card possessing a particular skill or power. In a typical turn-based structure, each player takes a turn to outsmart their opponent, using cards that can either whittle down an enemy’s stats, or remove them from the board altogether.

According to the site, you will need a minimum of 60 cards to be able to play Lorcana. To begin, you will need to get your hands on a Starter Deck, which includes all the necessary cards, tokens, and rulebooks.

Let it be said that there’s plenty we still don’t quite know about the gameplay. But, as luck would have it, Lorcana isn’t all that far away from its soft launch, so it’s only a matter of time until Ravensburger sheds a little more light on it. Here’s hoping, anyway.

Decks, Starter Packs & Boosters

So far, Ravensburger has announced a total of seven starter cards: Captain Hook, Elsa, Robin Hood, Stitch, Cruella De Vil, and Mickey Mouse. It hasn’t been said when exactly the next batch will be announced yet, but given the fact Disney has over a hundred years of material on hand, it’s unlikely that Lorcana will be running short of playable cards and booster packs anytime soon. And yes, to answer the burning question—there will, of course, be rare shiny cards to collect.

Another question that fans of the brand have been asking is whether or not Pixar will be making an appearance, to which we can only shoot down with a rather disappointingly vague answer. And as unfortunate as it is to say, neither Disney nor Ravensburger have actually made this clear yet, though a few Disney representatives did say in an early press release that, while Lorcana will be dipping into its bottomless pocket of animated favorites, it’s unlikely that it will retrieve any of its live-action worlds (e.g., Marvel or Star Wars.)

If Disney Dreamlight Valley is an anchor point for Lorcana, then one can only begin to imagine that it will also feature an equal amount of Pixar characters as well as all the classic Disney ones. So, try not put a pin in the balloon just yet; Woody and Buzz may still be standing in line ready for their debut after all.

So, what decks and booster packs will be available to purchase moving forward? Well, as confirmed by Ravensburger, there will be four in total: Starter Deck, Booster Pack, Gift Set, and Illuminer’s Trove. You can see what’s included in each pack down below.

Release Date

The first set of cards (also known as “Chapter One”) will be releasing in “Fall 2023,” which puts them somewhere from around September through to November.
