10 Best Silent Hill Games to Play
Compare ten Silent Hill games, including Townfall, Silent Hill f and both versions of Silent Hill 2, with spoiler-free premises and edition guidance.
Silent Hill works best when a place starts to feel wrong before you can explain why. The series moves between intimate psychological stories, unfamiliar towns, and more direct survival horror, so the newest release is not automatically the right starting point. These ten picks cover different approaches to that unease. The original Silent Hill 2 and its remake are separate recommendations because their presentation and combat create meaningfully different experiences. Older console releases can be difficult to obtain; a trailer or an old store page does not mean a modern digital edition is available.

10. Silent Hill: Downpour
Downpour follows Murphy Pendleton after a prison transport accident leaves him near Silent Hill. Exploring a rain-soaked town and deciding whether to investigate another unsettling building are its main attractions. It is a useful pick for someone who likes the series’ wider spaces and wants a less familiar story than the best-known entries. Combat and movement have rough edges, so approach it with the expectations of its original console generation. This is an older PS3 and Xbox 360 release, rather than a new game with the same easy availability as the recent PC and PS5 titles.

9. Silent Hill: Origins
Origins puts truck driver Travis Grady on a route through a town he should probably have driven past. Its smaller-scale structure, room-to-room exploration, and connection to the first game’s setting give it a recognizable Silent Hill identity. Choose it if you already like the earlier games and want another perspective on their world. It is less useful as the one modern recommendation for a newcomer who wants convenient current hardware support. The PSP and PS2 releases are older editions, and the similarities to familiar characters and locations should be discovered naturally rather than explained through plot summaries.

8. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Shattered Memories revisits the search for a missing child through exploration, conversations, and moments of desperate escape. Its particular appeal is how it plays with the player’s expectations of a familiar story. You do not need a combat-heavy horror game to find that premise uncomfortable. Pick it for an unusual reimagining rather than a faithful replacement for the original Silent Hill. Its Wii, PS2, and PSP versions also differ in how they are controlled. Keep the surprises intact: knowing that the game responds to your actions is enough preparation without listing the consequences or explaining its conclusion.

7. Silent Hill 4: The Room
The Room begins with Henry Townshend trapped in his apartment, turning an ordinary living space into something deeply suspicious. That simple setup gives the game a different rhythm from wandering the streets of Silent Hill. Choose it if you want the series to make a familiar place feel unsafe, with exploration and resource management surrounding a recurring home base. Its structure can be demanding, and it does not offer the smoothest route into the franchise. The PC edition on GOG is a practical official option to investigate; check its supported operating systems and controller details before buying.

6. Silent Hill
The original Silent Hill follows Harry Mason as he searches a fogbound town for his daughter. Limited visibility, uncertain sounds, and vulnerable movement make simply reaching the next location part of the tension. Its age is visible in the controls and presentation, but that restraint is also a major part of its character. Choose it if you want to understand where the series’ approach began. It is not interchangeable with Shattered Memories, and a modern remake announcement is not a substitute for checking the availability of the actual 1999 game. Avoid story explanations until after you have explored it.

5. Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 3 follows Heather, a young woman whose ordinary day slips into a hostile, distorted world. Its visual design and oppressive interiors make it a strong choice for players who want the earlier series at its most concentrated. This is also the recommendation here with an important starting-point qualification: the first Silent Hill provides meaningful context. Play that before reading detailed character histories or plot recaps. The original releases and the later HD Collection are different products, with different technical histories. Look carefully at the edition and platform being offered rather than buying on the title alone.

4. Silent Hill: Townfall
Townfall moves the series into the isolated Scottish setting of St. Amelia, with Simon Ordell drawn into a place full of unresolved questions. A first-person perspective and a handheld CRTV give exploration a different texture from the over-the-shoulder recent games. Pick it if you want a self-contained entry with its own setting rather than another route through familiar streets. The attraction is interpreting what you encounter while deciding how to move through a threatening environment. Its official PS5 and PC listings are the right places to check current requirements and accessibility information. The story works better without advance explanations.

3. Silent Hill f
Silent Hill f takes its horror to 1960s Japan and introduces Hinako, a teenager whose surroundings become increasingly unfamiliar and dangerous. The change of place gives the series a different visual and cultural frame while preserving its interest in fear that feels personal. Choose it if you want a new story rather than a remake of an older protagonist’s journey. Expect disturbing imagery and demanding encounters, rather than a gentle mystery with an occasional scare. Its opening premise is enough to judge your interest; character interpretations, symbolic explanations, and later developments are best left for after the credits.

2. Silent Hill 2 (2001)
The 2001 Silent Hill 2 sends James Sunderland to a town connected to a letter from his late wife. Its fixed cinematic framing, spare conversations, and uneasy movement make uncertainty part of the experience. Pick the original if you are interested in how that older presentation shapes the story, rather than treating age as an automatic disadvantage. Finding a suitable legitimate edition can take more effort than buying the modern remake. Do not assume the original PC release, PS2 game, HD Collection, and 2024 remake are the same purchase. The famous reputation is a reason to avoid spoilers, not to read them first.

1. Silent Hill 2 (2024)
The 2024 remake keeps James’ search at its center while rebuilding the adventure around an over-the-shoulder perspective, more involved environments, and modern combat. It is the most straightforward starting recommendation here if you want this particular story on current hardware. Pick it for a substantial survival-horror journey with room to explore, solve puzzles, and feel uncertain about the next encounter. It is a separate game from the 2001 release, rather than a graphics toggle for it. Check the current PC requirements or PS5 edition, then let the town introduce its own questions without consulting an ending guide.

Which Should You Play First?
Start with the Silent Hill 2 remake for a modern, self-contained route into the series. Choose Townfall or Silent Hill f when a different setting sounds more appealing. The older games remain worthwhile, but edition availability and technical expectations should shape the recommendation as much as a ranking number.
