True Video Game Endings That Are a Nightmare to Unlock

There’s never truly a way to tell what the ending of a game could be. You’ll play through a game with a blindfold on, expecting the developers to, in one way or another, make the ending a perfect one. But with the increasing expectation to fulfill every gamer’s needs, developers are constantly coming up with clever ways to spice up video games endings, so you keep going back for more.

From emotionally compelling endings to several endings that are either sad, silly, or just plain awful, games are getting more complex by the day. Most popularly, it is the trend to put gamers through challenges, quests, or preset requirements to unlock a game’s true ending. Some are easy peasy. Others are just the toughest, hard-to-get endeavors that will keep you up day and night trying to unlock them.

Ready to take a look at the top five true video game endings that are a nightmare to unlock?

5. Ogre Battle: The March Of The Black Queen

Ogre Battle: The March Of The Black Queen is a tactical RPG dating back to 1993. You’ll probably remember it from how much effort it takes to unlock the “World Ending,” which is also the true ending of the game. The requirements alone are a nightmare and can even make you wince a little.

First, gamers must have an almost full Reputation Meter and all 12 Zodiac Stones. Okay… that makes sense. Moving on, you need to recruit Tristan and Rauny, but not Galf. It sounds somewhat easy enough. But that’s not all. Afterward, you need to recruit some more special characters and keep them alive to see each of their scenes through to the ending. Yikes.

Even though you’re, for the most part, a passive gamer, following the characters’ journey as they fight with one another, getting to the true ending is a near-perfect affair with a checklist guiding your every step. From recruiting all the key characters to finding all the special equipment you need, you’re going to have to be keen and vigilant to successfully recruit and send off your characters, alive, through to the true ending.

4. Shadow the Hedgehog

Let’s leave out the review of Shadow the Hedgehog and focus on the true ending, which is a long trek, to say the least. Before unlocking the true ending, Shadow the Hedgehog has an extensive 326 total number of paths you could take to complete the initial 10 endings before getting to the 11th true ending. There’s no skipping over, no shortcuts. Players must defeat all of the bosses and unlock all of the video game endings by following either “good” or “bad” paths.

Once you’re done with the first 10, it’s time to have a crack at unlocking the true ending. Of course, it’s a little more tricky, but you’re almost there, so you keep trying, collecting rings to stay alive until you defeat the final boss. It’s not an impossible task. However, the nightmare here is having to go through all the trouble, persevering through bland visuals, boring backgrounds, and weak character designs. But hey, for super hardcore fans out there, you got this.

3. Painkiller

It’s funny how the game is called Painkiller yet actively finds joy in punishing you, over and over. If the main goal was to see how far your limits could go, then Painkiller does it perfectly. With difficulty levels that get intense with each stride, from daydream to insomnia, to literally-named, Nightmare, to the Trauma level, every stride you make just feels like all blood, sweat, and tears.

Each level has conditions that you must meet to unlock each card. Once you unlock all the cards and can beat the ruthless Trauma level, then you can breathe a little easier, knowing you’ve at long last unlocked the true ending of Painkiller.

2. Suikoden

Video Game Endings That Are a Nightmare to Unlock

The Suikoden series has a wild reputation for true endings that are a nightmare to unlock. Right from the first game, gamers need to acquire all of the 108 Stars of Destiny to get to the true ending. But Konami, Suikoden’s developer, didn’t just stop there. He saw an opportunity to worsen the odds. So, in the second game, players not only need to acquire all 108 characters but also defeat several ruthless bosses and successfully complete timed challenges to get to the true ending.

To spice things up, Konami decided to give players a choice in the true ending that will influence the final outcome. But regardless of how tough it gets, we’re here for all of it, especially Suikoden 2, which you might want to give a try as it’s the highly superior entry compared to the other games in the series.

1. Diddy Kong Racing

True Video Game Endings That Are a Nightmare to Unlock

Unlike Mario Kart Racing, Diddy Kong Racing is quite enticing to play because of the story mode that keeps you glued to finding out, “What happens next?” Unfortunately, getting to the true ending isn’t a piece of cake. Gamers only set their eyes on the prize once they have all four pieces of the Wizpig Amulet. At least there’s some leeway where you won’t need to have all four pieces of the TT Amulet.

But before you get all excited, there are other nitty-gritties you’ll need to acquire, like having four hidden keys, 47 balloons, and gold trophies in all four trophy races. It doesn’t end there, though. There’s no going anywhere if you don’t defeat the bosses all the way to the final tricky one with Wizpig.

Once you’ve got all the items you need to tick off your checklist, then we wish you all the fun unlocking the final, true ending. If not, buckle up for some more races with Wizpig. After all, what’s kart racing without collectibles, boss levels, enticing secrets plus a story mode?
