NBA 2K27: Everything We Know

Until EA Sports’ NBA Live 19, there hasn’t been any other licensed basketball simulation franchise that has given the NBA 2K franchise a run for its money. And I suppose that’s why the best games in the series are behind us. The NBA 2K20, NBA 2K16, and NBA 2K11 iterations set the bar high in the series, adding innovative features and gameplay mechanics that have remained the standard for later iterations. 

Otherwise, few entries have been revolutionary. Many have given us all we’ve seen before, with updates to the roster and graphics. Yet, even with the graphics, the changes are becoming more and more negligible as we near the launch of the next-gen consoles. 

But with every new announcement of an upcoming annual release, a part of me remains hopeful that 2K Games may surprise us. This is the sliver of hope I carry with me, analyzing what the new NBA 2K27 plans to do differently. 

What is NBA 2K27?

NBA 2K27 is an upcoming basketball simulation game by Visual Concepts and 2K Games. It’ll be the 28th installment in the NBA 2K franchise, which is currently the only licensed game based on the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). So, this means the game is allowed to feature the real-life NBA and WNBA players, as well as the official teams you may be rooting for.

Story

2K Games has given us a few details about NBA 2K27, promising that more news will be coming during an NBA 2K27 Preseason Breakdown: Game Reveal stream on August 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM PT. The stream will go live on their socials and will be the main source of all the innovations and features 2K Games plans to bring to the next iteration. 

So, for now, we know the cover athletes you can expect, which include Vector Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark, and Derrick Rose for the Standard, Deluxe, and Ultra Edition copies, respectively. Victor Wembanyama is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Caitlin Clark is a WNBA superstar who holds the all-time NCAA Division I record, Rookie of the Year, and is a two-time All-Star athlete. Meanwhile, Derrick Rose is a South Side of Chicago legend, most known for being the youngest MVP in NBA history and a three-time All-Star NBA player.

We also have first looks at the graphics, thanks to the screenshots on NBA 2K27’s website. I can’t really tell much of a difference compared to NBA 2K26. The character models and faces look pretty much like they did last year. 

Gameplay

You know how it is. MyCAREER, MyTEAM, and MyNBA return to offer varied gameplay experiences. As far as I can tell, the game modes seem to offer the same experience as last year. However, the official website highlights some new changes, with more specific details to come during the live stream on August 18.

For example, the website confirms that the new game will have smarter AI defense, making them contest shots more effectively. Moreover, the new game will have a new Dunk Meter, which times your dunks and evaluates whether you’ve earned the shot against a defender. There are also new MyPLAYER badges to look out for, totaling 53, including one that increases the ball handler’s sprint speed, decreases the opponent’s shot chance, and improves overall movement.

Development

Visual Concepts and 2K Games return to deliver yet another iteration in the long-running NBA 2K franchise. The first announcement was on July 28, 2026, revealing the cover athletes. Then came the gameplay reveal. And we’re awaiting a live stream on August 18, 2026, that will reveal more details about the innovations and features we can expect.

Trailer

The NBA 2K27 gameplay trailer is, indeed, out now, and well, it doesn’t really show any in-game gameplay footage, which hardly makes sense given that it’s outright labeled an “official gameplay trailer.” Anyway, do enjoy the music that you may have heard before, and the graphics that barely look any different from NBA 2K26. It’s a bit of a disappointment to see that nothing much has changed. Perhaps future news updates will reveal some kind of fresh update that actually makes a difference on and off the court.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

The physical and digital copies of the upcoming NBA 2K27 will launch on September 4, 2026. It’s the first iteration that will release on current-gen consoles only. So, that includes the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms. And yes, the editions are already out now for pre-orders.
