The Chant: 5 Things You Should Know

In a world where cult-like satanic rituals and demonic possessions are commonplace, The Chant absolutely strives to be the first port of call. But what is it, exactly, and how are the guys over at Brass Token working to mold this conceptually vibrant realm into a wickedly bleak and hellish underworld? Well, that's the thing. As it stands, we don't know a huge deal about the game, only the key details that Brass Token has let slip since its mid-2022 announcement.

The good news is, The Chant is hanging up to dry right there on the horizon, meaning we won't have to wait all that long to unravel its leftover mysteries. But until then, here's what you should know about the upcoming survival horror.

5. What Is The Chant?

The Chant is an upcoming third-person survival horror game by Brass Token, a Vancouver-based indie developer that will be making its debut later this fall. Its world, which trickles close to the same shoreline as Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake, will look to incorporate a deceivingly idyllic setting that houses a myriad of darker and unavoidably sinister secrets. As players, it is you who will work to unravel its mystery and local lore in search of answers.

Although Brass Token has kept a lot of the game's details under wraps since its mid-2022 reveal, the team has treated viewers to two trailers, advertising both the story and the gameplay. But let's go ahead and skim the fat right off the top by diving deeper into The Chant's story. Here s what we know so far…

4. Story

The Chant takes place on Glory Island, a strangely idyllic spiritual retreat that houses a cult-like organization known as The Chant. As Jess, you will venture out to the breathtakingly beautiful network of islands in search of spiritual guidance to help alleviate the trauma that connects to a past event. However, with the self-made faction hell-bent on the idea of opening an multidimensional world known as The Gloom, you will need to learn to accommodate the absurdities that linger on the nearby horizon.

While playing as Jess, you will have the opportunity to explore multiple story arcs, each of which will include different key events and conclusions to unfold. Glory Island will also host a rich and immersive heritage, something that a little open world exploration will help you to understand and, in turn, paint a definitive picture of its many, many wonders.

3. Gameplay

The Chant - Gameplay Trailer

The Chant is a third-person action-adventure game that will look to incorporate a branching timeline that players will be able to tailor through various choices and dialogue options. Judging by the gameplay trailer that was revealed just last week, the journey will also feature its fair amount of close-quarters combat, which basically snowballs an otherwise episodic walking simulator into a full-blown action-adventure with horror elements to boot.

At first glance, The Chant appears to merge the likes of Life is Strange and Telltale's The Walking Dead's storytelling structure with a major helping of Alan Wake's combat. Bundled in with its own home-brewed blend of deeply immersive open-world exploration and island lore, The Chant comes into its own as an eerily compelling realm of wonder and intrigue. As for what else the gameplay will entail is really anybody's guess, though at the moment, we're inclined to agree with those who are slotting it in the same gene pool as Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake.

2. Development

Brass Token first announced The Chant earlier this year, revealing a relatively short teaser trailer to whet potential buyers' appetites. Although not a globally recognized studio, several of the creators at Brass Token did lend their knowledge and resources to both Square Enix's Sleeping Dogs, and Rockstar's Bully, which alone speaks volumes for the team behind The Chant.

It isn't clear as to what it was that piqued Brass Token's interest in developing the cult-like survival horror, but according to the team, its primary mission is “to create intriguing games that touch on players’ emotions and stay with them long after they’ve put down the controller.” The Chant, of course, will reflect this vision, which we'll be able to get a clearer picture of this coming November. Speaking of which…
