Sega Mega Drive Mini 2

Sega, one of the longest-standing and most reputable companies in the gaming industry broke headlines today with their Mega Drive Mini 2. The miniature console will hold 50 games from the Mega Drive and Mega CD. Which is more commonly known in North America as the Sega Genesis and Sega CD. In Japan, the system is set to release on October 27, 2022, however, there is no confirmed date for an international release yet. It's coming in at a cost of ¥9,980 which roughly converts to an $80 price tag.

If you're a fan of old-school games, then you'll most likely want to get your hands on the Mega Drive Mini 2. The system will include arcade ports for games, which Sega classified as “mysterious new work”. We're not sure what that involves, but it's intriguing when you consider the Mega Drive Mini 2's confirmed games list.

Confirmed Games for the Mega Drive Mini 2

Prepare to nerd out, because the Mega Drive Mini 2 has eleven games confirmed so far, and it's already looking like a strong selection. The games coming from the Mega CD and Mega Drive that we currently know about are:

  • Silpheed
  • Shining Force CD
  • Sonic CD
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls
  • Popful Mail
  • Virtua Racing
  • Bonanza Bros
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Thunder Force IV
  • Magical Taruruto
  • Fantasy Zone (Mega Drive port)

Fantasy Zone, which was supposed to release on the original Mega Drive but never did, appears it will this time around. The version of the game for the Mega Drive 2 is based on its sequel, Super Fantasy Zone, using it as a framework for a new Mega Drive port.

The First Mega Drive Mini, which was released in 2019, came with 42 games, and it was a huge success. With that said, Sega didn't accomplish everything they set out for, with some games missing from the bunch. That's why the new Sega Mega Drive 2 aims to build on this, providing gamers with everything they might want from a current Sega Genesis system.
