Plushy Store Tidy Up Review (PC)

Plushy Store Tidy Up reminds me of Hamleys during the festive period — chaotic, littered with foot traffic, yet bursting with colorful surprises of all shapes and sizes. Granted, it isn’t the sort of place that I would actively choose to spend my time in, but it certainly is a spot that I’d recommend to those interested in plush and plastic, ribboned doll houses and overly expensive doohickeys.

Plushy Store Tidy Up is, if anything, a game that reveals the aftermath of that same festive weekend. The toys are everywhere, and nobody has the faintest idea how it all fell apart in the blink of an eye. But, it doesn’t matter, because it isn’t in your job description to ask questions. It is, however, your responsibility to clean it all up for minimum wage. It isn’t the sort of retail therapy that fills you with joy, and it definitely isn’t the festive kiss to an otherwise lackluster holiday. An enormous toy store needs tidying up, and you, for some reason, are the only person who can tend to it.

Regardless of the mode you choose—Relaxed Mode or Challenge Mode, that is—the objective of the game is pretty self-explanatory. Like Librarian or, broadly speaking, the twenty-something clean-‘em-up games that have released since Librarian, your sole purpose is to rummage through thousands of plushies, find their respective departments, and stow them away in an orderly manner. The only difference between the two basic modes is that you either have a timer, or a calmer environment with less pressure to complete your work. But other than that, Plushy Store Tidy Up is a simple game that wears its heart on its sleeve. It’s textbook, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than that.

It’s likely that you have already seen your fair share of clean-‘em-up games. Thanks to Librarian, we have a clear blueprint to work with—a by-the-numbers code of conduct that primarily focuses on two basic things: organizing, and establishing catharsis in your work. With just under two-thousand plushies to collect and return to the shelves, the goal is simple: take the time to identify each plushy, and then find their rightful place in the store. And if you think it cuts any deeper than that, then you will be sorely disappointed. It isn’t a game that dares to do things a little differently, but rather, a game that embraces the norm and adds its own layer of cotton to the tapestry. Not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you.

Plushy Store Tidy Up Gameplay

To tell a lie, Plushy Store Tidy Up does have an extra layer to it. Similar to Shelve the Potions, it often tasks you with deciphering various “puzzle shelves”—areas that, if you decide to opt for the Challenge Mode, you will need to carefully analyze before sorting out the plushies. For example, if a plush has a specific color, characteristic, or theme, then you will need to locate the correct shelf in order to complete the section. In Relaxed Mode, you don’t have the same trouble; the plushies can go anywhere, so long as there are none left on the floor by the time you cash your paycheck.

Unfortunately, there is one small gripe that I have with the whole tidying up process: the lack of sparkle. Unlike Librarian—a game in which you would receive a small audio or visual cue after placing a book back in its rightful place—there isn’t a lot here that rewards you for your efforts. There are no special effects, and there is no “magic” to complement your labor. Simply, you place plushies back on the shelves, and you work to the sound of silence as the store slowly begins to relocate its rhythm. Like Hamleys during a post-festive break, then.

In addition to its simple routine, Plushy Store Tidy Up also features an array of passive updates for you to unlock as you carve through the cotton. For example, you can unlock an ability that allows you to hold more plushies, increase your movement speed, or double your jumping power, the latter being more effective when passing through the store to reach trickier areas. Again, this isn’t anything that we haven’t already seen a dozen times before; Librarian set the tone, and the others have simply followed in its footsteps to sample that same sweet, sweet nectar.

Of course, if you do enjoy games that burn a similar candle as Librarian, then there’s no reason as to why you wouldn’t enjoy sifting through a thousand or more plushies. While it wears the same basic pattern, it is awfully satisfying to work through, especially if you’re looking for an affordable solution to scratch that itch. It might not do a lot more than your usual clean-‘em-up sim, but what it does offer is oodles of charm, which can of course be accredited to the fact that you are, quite simply, working with colorful toys and cuddly plushies.

For a game that doesn’t reinvent the wheel, Plushy Store Tidy Up does make for a pleasant experience. It’s the kind of thing that, unlike your usual dopamine injection, gives you a sense of peace and comfort. As it doesn’t require you to think too deeply about the stock or the consequences of failing to compile said stock, it makes for an easy-burning affair that checks out all of the obvious cozy details. It might not put the likes of Librarian in its place, but all in all it plays well and delivers everything it advertises on the box — and that’s a lot more than what others have struggled to achieve with their own incarnations in the past.

Verdict

Plushy Store Tidy Up Upgrades

Plushy Store Tidy Up adds a speck of polyester and fabric to an oh-so-recognizable tapestry of organizing simulators, not with the intent to revamp the aisle and put Librarian in its place, but to monetize a concept that has a reputable foundation and a strong player base. With the aid of thousands of colorful plushies and a clean gameplay style that doesn’t require much effort to master, it stitches itself into the fabric of a universally wearable piece of clothing, all in the hopes of presenting itself as a familiar, comfortable, and annoyingly durable product. And it is.

As Plushy Store Tidy Up fits into a rather niche area, there is still the question of whether or not it will have the same shelf life as your traditional “cozy” game. At the moment, it fits nicely with the other Librarian clones. The thing is, as with most niche ideas, trends tend to phase out. It’s simply a matter of how long it will last before another concept steals the spotlight.
