Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy — Everything We Know

A Plague Tale series has some of the best writing, graphics, and art direction. It’ll make you feel things, even make grown men cry. Not sure how the first game, Innocence, came out in 2019, seven years ago, and still remains one of the most emotional games ever made, as well as the second, Requiem, in 2022. The dynamic between the siblings, Amicio and Hugo, has been the focal point for the series, rooted in blood and sacrifice.

Disease, war, and death are recurring themes in the series, as well as familial bonds and the supernatural. Meanwhile, the setting is medieval, in historical London during the Black Death. But for the third game, we’re spinning off, putting the spotlight on Sophia, the smuggler who helps Amicio and Hugo cross over the sea to safety. It’s time to learn about Sophia’s background and how she came to be the fearsome sailor in Requiem in our Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy: Everything We Know article.

What is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

Sophia

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is an upcoming action-adventure game in the A Plague Tale series. It’ll be the prequel to Requiem, taking you 15 years back in the life of Sophia, the smuggler and sailor who protected Amicia and Hugo.

The first game, A Plague Tale: Innocence, launched in 2019, and followed fifteen-year-old noblewoman Amicia and her five-year-old brother, Hugo, as they fled the French Inquisition, the Black Death, and hordes of rats.

A Plague Tale: Requiem launched in 2022, picking up where the first game left off with Amicia helping Hugo find a cure to his curse. The swarms of rats return in the hundreds of thousands, tying into the story and gameplay in mind-blowing ways.

For the upcoming prequel, though, Asobo Studio is shifting the lens of the story and gameplay to Sophia, whose powers in Requiem were stealth and melee-based. She solved environmental puzzles across Minotaur Island in interesting ways, using ancient artifacts.

It seems we’ll be heading back to Minotaur’s Island to unravel a new, original story about Sophia’s background. Here, we’ll encounter deadly enemies, uncover ancient secrets, and come face-to-face with a mythical creature that’s tied to a catastrophic curse.

Story

Sophia and hyn Erso inside a tomb

Like the previous instalments, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be a single-player action-adventure. You’ll unravel a new story, set in the A Plague Tale universe. This time, though, we’re 15 years before the events in A Plague Tale: Requiem, following the story of a young Sophia.

She’s a young plunderer, still fierce, but on the run from her past. She’s hellbent on learning where she comes from, discovering the secrets she’s running away from. Along her journey, you’ll encounter enemies while exploring a world dipped in rich mythical stories and twists of fate.

The setting is on Minotaur Island, where you’ll need to beat deadly trials. It’s a treacherous island full of tough terrain, complex puzzles, and enemies. Behind you is an army chasing you down. Ahead of you is the “true challenge,” which is described as a deadly mythical creature whose fate is tied to yours.

Gameplay

Two Centurions

Your combat will be more agile than in previous games, showcasing Sophia’s strength and fierce character. You’re most lethal with your blade, using it to engage in melee-based fighting. The enemies you encounter are drawn to the island to claim mysterious treasure, but their path is just as treacherous as yours, with mazes to figure out.

Sophia is fast, cunning, and has quick reflexes. She easily outsmarts her enemies, parrying their attacks and unleashing powerful strikes in deadly encounters.

Although the game takes place in a medieval setting, you’ll also travel back to ancient Minoan times. Both the past and in-game present will intertwine, revealing two heroes whose stories are linked through fate and the Macula’s legacy.

Exploration is also a key part of gameplay, guided by your notebook and your crew who went ahead of you. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy promises a detailed world with lots of secrets and deadly challenges. Using a Minoan sphere, you’ll solve clever puzzles, as well as light manipulation, which both return from Requiem

The Island is a dangerous place. Only a few return. Lurking in the shadows is a constant foreboding presence that you hide from and try to outsmart.

Development

As expected, Asobo Studio is developing Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, in partnership with publisher Focus Entertainment. Although they went silent for a year, they’ve returned with a new game that’s nearly finished.

By focusing on Sophia, Asobo Studio is able to experiment with a fresh combat system. It’s a more direct and dynamic system that focuses on melee strikes. Even with the shift to a new and unexpected character, Asobo Studio assures players of still developing a strong protagonist who faces overwhelming odds.

Plenty is in store for the new game: “New themes, new visual inspirations, and new approaches to gameplay” as well as “larger combat spaces, deadly trials, and more aggressive encounters.” Overall, you can expect a more action-oriented gaming experience that still feels familiar to the emotional storytelling, mystery, and tension in the previous games.

Trailer

In addition to a release date reveal trailer, you can also watch a seven-minute gameplay trailer that’s a lot more detailed. Unfortunately, you won’t be controlling or fighting any swarms of rats. And of course, Amicia and Hugo are missing.

In any case, I’m already pretty excited to play Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. You get sneak peeks into the more agile movement and melee combat. The trailers also show expanded lore and the myth of the Minotaur, as well as the medieval and ancient worldbuilding.
