Project MBR: Everything We Know

Kickstarter has helped funnel life into a myriad of video game concepts over the years—moreso titles that have gone on to gain a global backing through pledges and tiered perks. Project MBR, for example, is a 5v5 mecha-based multiplayer game that recently planted roots on the crowdfunding platform. Much to SIEG Games' surprise, the mechanical shooter garnered a fair amount of attention following its formal announcement earlier this year.

It's shaping up to be a long road for the Tokyo-based studio, what with its vision being entirely dependent on its crowdfunding campaign. If, however, the target of just shy of $200,000 can be met, then Project MBR will enter its active development state, which will no doubt open the floodgates for more details. Until that time does come, here's everything you will need to know.

What Is Project MBR?

Project MBR is an upcoming multiplayer robot action shooter by SIEG Games. In short, the idea of the game is to pit 10 players against one another in a 5v5 format, and have each combatant build and upgrade their own combat-ready robots. Think Titanfall and Armored Core, with perhaps a hint of Star Wars Squadrons, and you'll have a vague idea of what we're talking about.

“Produced by Yoichi Miyaji, the founder of Game Arts, who has created numerous innovative games,” the Kickstarter feed reads in part. “Directed by Ryuji Inomata, who has participated in works such as GunGriffon and Super Smash Bros. X. Music composed by Tokuyuki Iwadare, a world-renowned composer. The world setting was created by Koichi Inoue, a planning producer who has worked on many famous anime such as Gundam. This project also features many other Japanese anime and Robot-loving creators.”

Story

As it's still early days yet, we can't say for certain what the story will entail. That said, SIEG Games has lifted the veil on some of its key details, particularly its setting. According to the short description, Project MBR will take place on earth, 30 years in the future—a time where mechanical beasts and drones roam the land while forever gridlocked in an endless war. This is where you, along with your team, will assume your collective position as the pilot of a robot vessel, and wage war against the enemies around you.

“A near-future setting that takes into account the extension of the real world, as envisioned by Mr. Koichi Inoue, with works such as the setting production of “Armored Trooper Votoms”, the planning, setting, and production of “Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO”,” the Kickstarter adds.

Again, as it's a little early on in the development phase, we can't say for certain whether or not Project MBR will feature an offline campaign of any sort. As it stands, though, it appears the team's primary objective is to flesh out its 5v5 online multiplayer mode. That said, we'll likely know more once SIEG Games manages to acquire the funds to full-throttle the project.

Gameplay

According to SIEG Games, Project MBR will feature “a deep battle system that goes beyond mere shooting.” To this end, players can expect to not only build their own mech suits from scratch, but equip them with parts, weapons, and upgrades to help take advantage of the battlefield.

“This deep battle system requires more than just shooting down enemies; it requires strategic maneuvering based on the situation, such as capturing and defending bases and giving orders to drones.”

As Project MBR will indeed be a multiplayer game, you will need an internet connection to play it. It hasn't been said yet whether or not the game will roll out the red carpet to a couch co-op or single-player mode, though it does seem unlikely at this point in time. If anything of the sort does get announced, then we'll be sure to post an update.

Development

SIEG Games announced Project MBR in March of 2023, lifting the veil via its official Kickstarter handle. On March 7th, the team stapled a crowdfunding target of 25 million yen (approx. $184,293) on its front page—a target that will last until March 31st, at which point it will either enter active development, or fade away until further notice.

As Project MBR is under the “all-or-nothing” model, it does of course mean there's a slight risk the game won't actually come to fulfilment. If it does, however, then SIEG Games will be bringing it to both PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam at some point in “Spring 2024.”

Trailer

Project MBR - Official Trailer

The good news is, SIEG Games hasn't kept quiet since announcing the mech shooter over on Kickstarter. In fact, even without the funds to launch the game into active development, the team has still managed to chalk up a trailer for it. You can catch a glimpse of what's to (hopefully) come in the video above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Project MBR will be coming to PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam in “Spring 2024.” That's according to SIEG Games, anyway. But of course, with a lot of its hopes and dreams stowed away in its Kickstarter campaign, this is subject to change depending on the pledges it hopes to accrue. And so, it's best to take everything with a grain of salt at this moment in time.

At present, SIEG Games has yet to announce any special or deluxe editions outside of its bog-standard version. Having said that, its Kickstarter campaign does have a surprisingly lofty list of rewards for anyone pledged to it. These rewards include physical jackets, t-shirts, dog tags, and art books. The only caveat here is that you'll need to pledge a certain amount of money to the project each and every month until its eventual release.
