Nintendo 3DS Game Canceled After a Decade of Development
If, by some random chance, you’ve been holding out on Mighty No. 9— an action platform game that was due to serve as something of a spiritual successor to the likes of Mega Man—on either Nintendo 3Ds or Vita (remember that?), then tough luck, folks — it isn’t happening. That’s right, developer Comcept has finally, after nearly a decade of allowing pre-orders to flood through the woodwork of countless online sites, decided to pull the rug on its crowdfunded port. Not that this comes as too much of a surprise, mind you; the Nintendo 3Ds hasn’t exactly been given all that much tender love and care since the Switch came to surface back in 2017.
Thankfully, it isn’t all doom and gloom on this front. As it turns out, Mighty No. 9 has been actively trying to ship copies on a multitude of consoles and PC for the better part of eight years. Unfortunately, there’s also something of a gray cloud to this rather unusual silver lining: Mighty No. 9 is, at least according to its “fan” base, one of the “worst” spiritual successors to ever touch gloves with the universally beloved Mega Man series. Perhaps, then, this would explain the lack of interest in witnessing a 3Ds and Vita port on the creator’s part. Either way, if we’re going by the game’s initial backlash, then it’s probably for the greater good. Probably.
On another note, Comcept is indeed working on some new material; the studio is currently tying the knot on a new simulation-sandbox hybrid called Fantasy Life I: The Girl Who Stole Time, which is currently due to launch on Nintendo Switch in 2025. So, while there’s an aptly timed final farewell from Mighty No. 9, there’s a brand-spanking hello from Fantasy Life I. Every cloud, I guess.
