Mario Kart 9 Is Apparently Still Happening, Despite Missing Nintendo Direct

Nintendo Direct shed light on a whole lot of games coming to the Switch, none of which put us any closer to cracking the whole Mario Kart 9 situation. Like Breath of the Wild 2, the ninth instalment to the beloved karting series failed to show up during the presentation, which of course left viewers feeling somewhat short-changed.

Rest assured, Mario Kart 9 is still in development. Well, at least that's what Kantan Games consultant Dr. Serkan Toto claimed a little while back. According to the insider, the next leg of the karting journey is most definitely under the hammer. Despite Mario Kart 8 and its vastly superior Deluxe counterpart still selling remarkably well, Nintendo will still hoist the anchor and set sail for a new region to explore.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz

“I am aware that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year, Toto said in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

One thing's for sure: the acclaimed series hasn't been present all that much over the last few years. Other than Mario Kart Live, which launched back in 2020, the mainline series has idled in the shadows since 2014. With the Switch celebrating its five-year anniversary this year, it could mean a new instalment looms closer than we might've originally expected. But don't take our word on that. Chances are, Nintendo will remain content with the overwhelming sales figures surrounding its universally acclaimed Deluxe segment.

So, what are your thoughts? Are you expecting to see the next chapter in the timeline drop at any point this year? Will Nintendo announce it at the next Nintendo Direct showcase? Let us know over on our socials here or down in the comments below.
