Immortals of Aveum: Everything We Know

Electronic Arts and Ascendant Studios have announced Immortals of Aveum, a magic-infused first-person shooter that'll reportedly take players to the center of Aveum, a war-torn world split between battlemages and an evil tyrant. Going by the press release, the campaign will be single-player, and will boast twenty-five or more hours of story-related content.

“I'm incredibly excited to finally show the world Immortals of Aveum,” said Bret Robbins, CEO and Game Director at Ascendant Studios. “It's been a five-year journey for us at Ascendant, and I'm so proud of the team and their commitment to making something great.”

So, what do you need to know about it, other than the fact it's being built under the EA Originals label? Well, here's everything we've been able to gather on the project since first hearing of it during The Game Awards 2022. Immortals of Aveum: what is it, and when can you expect to see it grace the shelves?

What Is Immortals of Aveum?

Immortals of Aveum is an upcoming first-person action game by Ascendant Studios, a firm that is acting under the guidance of the EA Originals label. Going by its elevator pitch, players will be hurled into the Everwar—an ongoing battle over which realm bears the right to control magic, be it Lucium, or Rasharn. This is where you, playing as an elite Triarch Magnus, will join the Immortals of Lucium, and in turn take the fight to Rasharn and defile the one who pulls the strings.

In Ascendant Studios' own words: “Summon your power, stop the Everwar, save the realms. Immortals of Aveum is a single-player first person magic shooter that tells the story of Jak as he joins an elite order of battlemages to save a world on the edge of abyss.”

Story

You will take on the role of Jak, an elite wielder of magic who, as a member of the Immortals, will embark on a quest to learn the secrets of Aveum. In addition to unearthing the lost knowledge of the world, you will also need to play your role in an ongoing feud between the two realms—Lucium, home to the Immortals, and Rasharn, home to an evil tyrant. With the land on the precipice of collapse, you must rally your army, master the art of magic, and venture forth to save what's left of Aveum and its future.

“Jak, an Unforeseen, is thrust into the Everwar – an endless struggle between Lucium and Rasharn – over the control of magic,” the blurb reads in part. “Jak and Lucium’s elite Immortals must race to uncover the mysteries of Aveum’s past if there’s any hope of saving its future.”

Gameplay

Immortals of Aveum will feature more than 25 spells to master—offensive and defensive magics that belong to one of three types: red, blue, and green. What's more, the game will include a skill tree with over 80 nodes to develop and employ into your arsenal. Add the fact that there'll also be magical gear to craft, playstyles to experiment with, and secrets to unravel, and you've got yourself quite the lofty journey on your hands.

“Magic is at the core of both your offense and defence,” the description adds. “Experience fast, fluid, first-person spell-based combat that’s easy to learn and satisfying to master. Skilfully use all three forces of magic and be rewarded for clever chained attacks and well-timed counters.”

“Unlock and upgrade more than 25 Spells and 80 Talents. Discover, upgrade and craft hundreds of pieces of magical gear, refine your playstyle across all three forces of magic and become Aveum’s most powerful Triarch Magnus.”

According to Ascendant Studios' senior art director Dave Bogan, Immortals of Aveum won't necessarily feature an open world in the traditional sense, but more a “hub and spoke” sort of deal. Going by what Bogan told GamesRadar, this type of style will promote both a linear narrative, as well as offer the player the occasional moment of open exploration, though nothing to the extent of being a full-fat open world sandbox to explore.

Development

Ascendant Studios first lifted the veil on Immortals of Aveum during The Game Awards 2022, an event that not only celebrates recently released games, but also gives up-and-coming titles a platform to stand on. Since then, Ascendant Studios has stapled a July 20, 2023 release to it, as well as the platforms it'll be heading to. Surprise surprise, it's a next-gen exclusive, meaning Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users are pretty much out of luck at this moment in time. Is this subject to change? Meh. It seems unlikely at this point, though.

Looking to see the action in motion? If so, then you'll be glad to know that Ascendant Studios did in fact release a sneak preview of Immortals of Aveum back at The Game Awards 2022. Need we say more? You can check it out for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Immortals of Aveum will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on July 20, 2023. Does that mean it won't be gearing up for an Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Switch release? Apparently not. And while it isn't out of the realm of possibility, it is unlikely.

According to Ascendant Studios, Immortals of Aveum will launch with a Deluxe Edition, which will include additional in-game content; a sigil, three rings, two bracers, and three totems. This version of the game will be free to those who have an active subscription on EA Play Pro. If not, then the standard copy will cost $59.99 on PC, and $69.99 on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
