which is better

2K Games and EA Games have long fought for dominance in the sports gaming market. Year after year, EA Sports has amassed fans around their annual releases of the Madden NFL, FIFA, and NHL series. Whereas 2K Games is known for its highly popular NBA 2K series and, of course, its PGA Tour, golf series. However, heads up 2K Games, because a fight is about to break out on the golf course. That's right, after an eight-year hiatus, EA Games has picked up their irons and are teeing up for a shot at taking over PGA Tour 2K23, with their newest release, EA Sports PGA Tour 23. This, of course, begs the question of which game is better.

Despite the fact that PGA Tour 2K23 released well ahead of its competitor, golf fans are waiting for an answer on which direction to go this year. And the debate has erupted over whether EA Sports PGA TOUR 23 is offering a better product, at a later date. If this is the case, many golf gaming enthusiasts may be bashing their clubs, or joysticks in this case, for jumping the gun. After all, golf is a game of patience.

Well, wait no longer. Because we're here to answer if EA Sports PGA Tour 23 is really offering a more fine-crafted game than PGA Tour 2K23. So, read on to find out which game is better.

What is EA Sports PGA Tour 23?

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Official Gameplay Trailer

EA Sports PGA Tour 23, (Also known as, EA Sports PGA Tour: Road to the Masters), is the latest golf video game developed by EA Tiburon and published by yours truly, EA Sports. The game's core premise is to begin a single-player career as an amateur golfer with the hopes of progressing to and receiving an invitation to the PGA Tour. The ultimate goal is to win all four golf Majors (for a Grand Slam title), a Green Jacket, and other honors. With one overarching goal in mind: to become the greatest golfer of all time. Of course, you can enjoy both local and online multiplayer modes in the game. However, the emphasis is on the career mode.

What is PGA Tour 2K23

PGA TOUR 2K23 | Official Gameplay Trailer | 2K

PGA Tour 2K23 is the latest installment in 2K Games' golf videogame series. The premise is similar to that of EA. Begin your MyCareer in Q-School and work your way up to the Korn Ferry Tour before punching your ticket and competing against the best on the TOUR. This is a 34-course tournament, in which you compete in a variety of courses, both real-life and 2K created, all in the hopes of gaining FedExCup points and proving yourself to be the best golfer at the end of the season. PGA Tour 2K23 also includes a slew of local and online multiplayer modes to sink your wedges into.

Gameplay

Which is better

The real kicker for which game is better ultimately comes to gameplay, and what each title offers golfers. To begin, EA Sports PGA TOUR 23 features 30 real-life courses, including all Four Majors (This includes Augusta National). In contrast, PGA Tour 2K23 has 49 2K official courses, which, of course, aren't official real-life courses. They do, however, have a roster of more than 20 official real-life courses. Nonetheless, EA has the advantage of offering more official courses, including the ability to play the Masters. So, in terms of official courses, EA has the upper hand.

Having said that, one deciding factor is that PGA Tour 2K23 includes an extensive course designer. You can create the most professional or absurd courses imaginable. Furthermore, there is a community playlist where you can try out courses created by others. Providing a fresh and continuously fun way to play the game. The reason this is so big is that EA Sports PGA Tour 23 doesn't feature a course designer. As a result, you must play on all official courses. Of course, that's where the main appeal stems, but if you've played previous 2K golf games, you'll know there's something special about getting to play with your friends on new and exotic courses.

Aside from those primary aspects of gameplay, both games include single-player and ranked online modes. As well as full-customization private matches. However, PGA Tour 2K23 is upping the ante again by offering up Top Golf mode, as well as cross-platform play. Whereas EA Sports PGA Tour 23 is getting cross-play, at a later date.

Graphics

Which is better

In terms of graphics, we want both games to look as realistic as possible. EA Sports PGA Tour 23 is built on the Frostbite engine, whereas PGA Tour 2K23 is built on the Unity Engine. Based on what we've seen so far, EA Sports PGA Tour 23 has sharper and more realistic graphics – this isn't to say PGA Tour 2K23's graphics aren't good. As they are certainly at a professional standard, however, EA Sports PGA Tour 23 is noticeably sharper.

However, another big driver in the discussion of which game is better graphically comes down to FPS. PGA Tour 2K23 offers 60 FPS on console, whereas EA Sports PGA TOUR 23 is only 30 FPS on console. Again, EA is planning on adding 60 FPS for consoles, at a later date. However, we'd prefer the smoothest experience possible, which is currently PGA Tour 2K23. Even if EA Sports PGA Tour 23 is graphically better.

Verdict

Which is better

Overall, there is a strong argument to be made on both sides about which game is better. However, the answer is a matter of personal preference. If you want to dive into the most in-depth, realistic, and professional Career mode possible, we recommend EA Sports PGA Tour 23, which includes more official courses as well as the ability to play the Masters.

However, if you want the most versatile experience possible, then PGA Tour 2K23 is the better bargain. It offers Top Golf mode, community course customization, cross-play, and more exciting ways to play and compete online. So, while you can make an argument on both sides about which game is better, the answer comes down to what you're looking for. With that said, if we had to pick an outright winner, we'd stick with our guns and say PGA Tour 2K23.
