5 Best Shoot ‘Em Up Games on PSVR

Published

 on

Shoot 'em up games have been in high demand ever since the PSVR first launched back in 2017. Much like its Oculus Quest cousin, the Sony-led headset boasts countless games of such high caliber, and has proven time and time again that true immersion is but a stone's throw away for those who are willing to take the leap.

At the time of writing, the PlayStation VR has already entered its final phase of life. Five years on, and Sony has finally decided to cash in on the popular tech by bringing the PSVR2 to the table, which will, in turn, gradually replace the original. But in case you're not quite ready to part ways with the first generation, then you're in luck, because there are still plenty of fantastic games and experiences ready to be had at the flick of a switch. And if it's shoot 'em up games you want, then look no further.

5. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

Until Dawn: Rush Of Blood | Launch Trailer | PlayStation VR

If you've experienced the horrors of the Wendigo fiasco and the whole of Supermassive Games' Until Dawn, then you'll no doubt want to delve into its specially made follow-up chapter for PSVR, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, an on-rails shooter that invites you to relive some of the crucial moments that helped forge the award-winning episodic journey that dominated the PlayStation Network back in 2015.

Rush of Blood is an eight-piece rollercoaster journey in which you rack up points by hitting targets, collectibles, and terrifying enemies over a series of familiar locations from the episodic tale. As one of the most immersive horror experiences on the VR dock, fans of Until Dawn won't want to miss this all-in-one retelling of the Wendigo-infused horror — especially if old school arcade shooters are a primary port of call.

4. Blood & Truth

To this day, no other VR game in the world has managed to encapsulate the same level of realism as seen in countless blockbuster movies as Blood & Truth, a twisted banquet of bullets, brawn, and bombs all stashed into one Michael Bay-like flick. In what may feel like a relatively short experience, you will spiral through one of the most immersive stories in VR gaming, and in turn come out as a next-level hero with a trigger finger for mindless mayhem.

Blood & Truth plants you in the boots of a former Special Forces officer, one who's tasked with saving his family after a London crime boss kidnaps and holds them to ransom. To do so, you must embark on an epic bullet-heavy journey that sees you taking on an empire, engaging in high-octane sharp-shooting battles, and going toe-to-toe with the streets in adrenaline-fueled high-speed pursuits. You know, the usual hero stuff.

3. Doom 3: VR Edition

DOOM3 VR Edition - Announce Teaser Trailer | PS VR

DOOM 3 bears the right to be referred to as one of the best first-person shooters in the history of video games, and rightfully so. As a saga with countless influenced spin-offs and millions of fans scattered over the globe, its creators basically wield the power to do whatever they please with the franchise, knowing all too well that no poor decision could ever put a stain on its reputation. And with that knowledge in mind, it wasn't all that surprising to see a VR remake finally come to light in 2021.

DOOM 3: VR Edition brings everything you've come to know and love to an all-new immersive playground, one that brings even more action to the index, thanks to the bundle also including The Lost Mission and Resurrection of Evil expansion packs. It's evidently DOOM, and we're all for its ludicrously entertaining gore-riddled festivities as a full-length PSVR exclusive.

2. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead : Saints & Sinners - Cinematic Trailer

Fans of Robert Kirkman and AMC's The Walking Dead will no doubt get a kick out of getting up close and personal in the brunt of the action in one of VR's fastest and most enthralling games of the decade, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. Zombie fan or not, there's no shedding the fact that Skydance Interactive's double-barrelled offering is arguably one of the best shoot 'em up series to ever grace the PSVR system.

Saints & Sinners hurls you into the post-apocalyptic world from Kirkman's The Walking Dead, a place in which New Orleans has succumbed to the zombie outbreak and is now on the brink of collapse. As players (also known as Tourists), you must learn to walk with the dead and find a new purpose between the weak and the damned, using whatever tools in your arsenal to defy the odds and survive another day.

1. Superhot VR

SUPERHOT VR Release Trailer

When all's said and done, as easy as it is to get lost in the stories of other shoot 'em up games on the PSVR, the grittiness of a good old-fashioned “shoot first, ask questions later” hit like Superhot comes second to none. In spite of the award-winning VR game having little to no real story-driven elements to onboard, its in-depth and surprisingly dynamic gunplay is a first-class experience in itself, and it shines brightest when experienced on something as feature-heavy as the PlayStation VR.

Superhot VR gives you the tools to weave together some of your very own Hollywood-esque action sequences. With a couple of armor-piercing handguns and an endless obstacle course to use to your advantage, nearly anything is achievable, and nothing is beyond the realm of possibility. Therefore, if you're all for the idea of taking on the role of next all-star action prodigy, then be sure to load up on this blood-bumping marathon.
