JRPGs have done fantastic this year, with this being one of the best years in recent memory. With such a wide variety of experiences out there, this genre of gaming has been standing firm. If players are unfamiliar with the genre, JRPGs often offer a perfect mix of deep storytelling and often in-depth gameplay mechanics. While many genre staples appeared this year, there are also some surprises. So without further ado, here are our picks for the 5 Best JRPGs of 2022, Ranked.

5. Harvestella

Harvestella is a game that blends together two genres of the game in a rather unique way. The game combines together JRPG elements with farming sim elements. This makes for an excellent experience for players who enjoy both of these types of games. The character within the game, while not being customizable, is certainly personable enough to carry the player through the hours of this game. So if you or a friend enjoy these types of games, then Harvestella should undoubtedly be on your radar.

The game follows our heroine as she attempts to save the world from a disease called the Quietus. This disease makes it so that crops won't grow; without crops, people can not eat. This simply will not do. As you make your way through the game, you will engage in many different activities. You will have to converse with the townsfolk and combat many monsters on your way to solving this ecological problem. So if you haven't tried a game like Harvestella before or are familiar with games like Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley, pick up one of the best JRPGs this year

4. Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a bold reimagining of what a Pokemon game can be. The game has many more open-world elements than its predecessor and allows players to customize their experience in ways never seen before in the series. For example, if players wish to, they can travel the world with their Pokemon companions. This adds to a feeling of immersion throughout the game as you can see people with their Pokemon out and about. The open-world mechanics have also changed drastically in this title, making them a tad more realistic.

Rather than being confined to wild grass, you will now see Pokemon roaming throughout the land, which feels more natural. Suppose players have not played this title and jumped straight ahead to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. In that case, they are certainly missing out, as many of the elements within this game are superior to this game's successor. So if you haven't explored the Sinnoh region of the past, then now is a fantastic time to do so, as it is one of the best JRPGs experiences you can have this year in 2022.

3. Xenoblade Chronicles 3Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Xenoblade Chronicles 3  is a masterclass in JRPG storytelling. This game features the player playing as one of the children that have been affected by a tremendous ten-year war. Along the way, players will journey and meet new characters in which to recruit to their team. This makes for a really immersive experience for players unfamiliar with the Xenoblade series. In addition, players are able to engage in action-based combat that feels smooth and responsive. If you have not yet delved into the Xenoblade series, this is a fantastic entry to get you started.

The gameplay mechanics have been changed up quite a bit and simplified to make them easier to grasp. If players are unfamiliar with the JRPG genre, then this makes a fantastic spot to jump in. The combat in the game allows the player to take advantage of many different characters' abilities to defeat their opponents. The combat is more action-combat-focused than its predecessors. The world of Aionos should definitely be explored by players who love a sense of adventure. Many different in-game events give the player plenty to do. As stated, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a fantastic JRPG that shouldn't be missed.

2. The Diofield Chronicle

The Diofield Chronicle is a title that came about as a collaborative project between Square Enix and Lancarse. These two joined forces to create a JRPG that, while not receiving a wild amount of critical acclaim, is undoubtedly a fantastic experience. The main gameplay loop sees players participating in a combat system that is a blend of action but not quite turn-based. This gives the game a rather unique feel as you go through it.

While the story may be standard fare for JRPGs, much like Fire Emblem, the combat is where this game shines. The game's Real-Time Tactical system means that players can plan out their strategies while watching them play out in real-time. This gives the combat a unique feel and sets the game apart from other JRPGs. Additionally, one key component of the game is the ability to upgrade your characters which plays a pivotal role in how you enjoy the game. Overall, while The Diofield Chronicle might have slipped under the radar this year, the experience it offers is one that players won't forget. These elements combine to make a game that has shaped up to be one of the best JRPGs of 2022

1. Elden Ring

Elden Ring is simply one of the best games to release in recent memory. With a fantastic assortment of JRPG elements that combine to make one stellar experience, this game reigns as one of the best to release. Much like other Souls games, the combat in the game is slow but deliberate, making for a punishing experience for newer players. However, this difficulty is mitigated by letting your friends help you. Also, the learning curve in this title is significantly easier to grasp than in past titles. So if you haven't experienced a Souls title, then Elden Ring is a fantastic way to jump on in.

You are a Tarnished, responsible for traveling through the Lands Between and smiting whatever foes you may find. Unfortunately, you will often find these foes to be a bit too much for you. If that is the case, then you can use the tremendous cooperative system that allows you to tackle these challenges with friends. Elden Ring is an experience that the entirety of the gaming community can rally around as a shared experience. In conclusion, Elden Ring is one of the best games in recent memory due to its solid gameplay mechanics, gorgeous world, and sandbox elements.
