Anno 117: Pax Romana — Everything We Know

Hear! Hear! Anno 117: Pax Romana is here! Well, almost here. Fans of the award-winning Anno strategy series will be sailing to Ancient Rome to build an empire that stands the test of time. Anno 1800 (2019), the latest mainline entry, kicked the ball out of the park, with gamers willingly sinking hundreds of hours into the game.

Now, Anno 117: Pax Romana is around the corner, and all we can say is it already seems to be shaping up to cause us to welcome countless sleepless nights. But before I get ahead of myself, what exactly do we know about Anno 117: Pax Romana? Be sure to read through till the end of our Anno 117: Pax Romana— Everything We Know article to find out.

What is Anno 117: Pax Romana?

Anno 117: Pax Romana is an upcoming city-building real-time strategy game. It’ll be the eighth game in the Anno series, picking up where Anno 1800 left off, at least in terms of gameplay innovation. The first Anno game was released in 1998. Since then, the award-winning strategy series has been tasking players with building a thriving civilization across different historical eras. We’ve had Anno 1602 (1998) set in the early modern period. Anno 1701 (2006) takes us to an 18th-century colony in the “New World.” Meanwhile, Anno 2070 (2011) shifts from the traditional historical setting to a futuristic take on global warming.

In all Anno games, the gameplay formula remains relatively the same. Players build and manage the resources of a colony. You tinker around with construction mechanics, alongside managing the economy and supply and production chains. Exploration is also key, as you discover unexplored territories. However, choosing between diplomacy and war is completely up to you, with the goal being to create a nation superior in technological advancement, military force, trade, and any other achievements you see fit.

For the first time in the series, Anno 117: Pax Romana will be taking players to Ancient Rome. It’s also the earliest historical era in Anno history, which gives us the perfect setting to explore urbanization and trade. As the official website reveals, players will be stepping into the shoes of a Roman governor. The setting will be the year 117 A.D. and the goal will be establishing a Roman Empire that rivals all others.

Within Anno 117: Pax Romana’s Ancient Rome setting, you’ll be given complete control over the twin provinces, Latium and Albion. As is Anno tradition, you’ll start small, expanding your reach across the lands. With each province presenting specific advantages and challenges, each player will come up with unique solutions that can spearhead repeated playthroughs to explore all possible scenarios.

According to Anno 117: Pax Romana’s Creative Director, Manuel Reinher, the upcoming game will fulfil the fantasy Anno fans have of governing “ one of the most iconic ancient empires.” Furthermore, he adds that Anno 117: Pax Romana will go beyond that and “change how people see the Roman Empire in games.”

Anno 117: Pax Romana

Anno 117: Pax Romana sticks to tradition, allowing you to choose how to proceed. You can choose diplomacy over attacking rival nations, keeping in mind that your decisions will impact your people. Trade is always at the heart of city-building, and this game will be no different. You can build your empire’s economy by trading with other nations. However, you have the option to use force, exerting dominance over rival powers. Will you encourage unity or rebellion? It’s all up to you to decide.

As far as we can tell, Anno 117: Pax Romana seems to stick to the Anno formula. It’ll mix “traditional city building, a deep economic simulation, 4X features like diplomacy and military, and a solid narrative layer.” Like the Anno games before it, Pax Romana will charge you with building sprawling metropolises through “complex logistic networks and production chains.” At the heart of the game will be the exploration of unchartered territories and meetups with NPCs and rival governors.
