RPGs like Runscape

If you’re a fan of online gaming, then you’ve probably heard of Runescape. It’s been one of the most popular online games since it was first released in 2001. In case you’re not familiar with it, Runescape is a free-to-play MMORPG (massively multiplayer online roleplaying game) that allows players to explore a large virtual world and complete quests. Since its launch, it has undergone several updates and expansions, and now features over 200 quests and 20 distinct skills. Players can explore the world of Gielinor, interact with other players, complete quests, and battle monsters in order to level up their characters. There is no linear storyline, so just get in there and have some fun. And it is not the only game you can play like this. Here are five RPGs like Runescape you can explore.

5. AdventureQuest World

Adventure Quest Worlds Trailer

AdventureQuest Worlds (AQWorlds) is a browser-based, massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 2008 by Artix Entertainment. It is based on the company’s earlier Flash game, AdventureQuest. Players can explore the game world, complete quests, battle monsters, and find new friends. The game is free to play, with players able to purchase in-game items and enhancements with real money.

AQWorlds is set in a fantasy world of swords and sorcery. To play the game, the player has to choose between being a warrior, rogue, mage, or healer. Each character has different characteristics, strengths, and abilities. The player’s character, known as a Hero, fights monsters and completes quests to progress through the game. By going deeper into the battle, the Hero gets a step closer to fighting the Dread Dragon, the king of Evil.

When you select a character, there are five basic skills that you can access, and you can unlock more as you continue to play. By defeating enemies and continuously playing, you can increase your rank and gain gold. Additionally, players enjoy random special events added to the game every Friday and in some other seasons. The game features a variety of locations, including forests, deserts, and dungeons. Players can also visit different towns and cities, where they can buy new equipment and meet new people.

4. Villagers and Heroes

Villagers and Heroes - Steam Launch Trailer

From Mad Otter Games comes a great RPG for anyone looking to explore a life of exploration, epic games, and a journey into the unknown in Villagers and Heroes. Players can start their mysterious quest in a mystical land that is divided into numerous zones. Players can choose any of the zones to play in and curate their own adventures.

From the starting point, players can choose whether they want to be a wizard, a warrior, a hunter, a shaman, or a priest. Depending on the class they choose, players can access a set of abilities created for each of them. There are talent points players can access if they play the game over a long period of time, and they can gain more combat skills. The characters can also acquire complementary professions in the areas of clothes making, mining, gardening, cooking, smithing, woodcraft, and more. The game is available on iOS, Windows, or Android, so players have different options when they want to play.

3. Dungeons and Dragons

D&D: Dark Alliance – Gameplay Explainer Trailer

Already a popular game in its own right, the famous Netflix series Stranger Things gave it a surge. Turbine released the game in 2006 and has repeatedly upgraded it to the version it is today. The online game is based on the original board game, giving players a chance to explore things from a 3D perspective. There are some differences between the tabletop version and the online one due to the dynamics of settings. Players enter the world of Xen’drik in the Eberron version and Cormyr in the Forgotten Realms one.

The game opens with the characters shipwrecked on Korthos, and they have to make their way out of it. Throughout the game, the player faces threats they have to overcome in combat or in battle. Quests differ depending on levels, patrons, and difficulty. You can go on a quest alone or join a group and go on a team. Players can join in as a group from anywhere in the world and make contact via chat sections or by voice. T

2. Wurm Online

Wurm Online: Steam Launch Trailer

Wurm Online is a brainchild of the gaming company Code Club AB, who released the movie in 2006. Players can play it either as player versus player or one realm versus another. The game gives players the skills to construct buildings, mine for resources, dig tunnels, and generally transform the land to their liking. Based on the hundreds of skills available, players can build their own villages and even take on religion. The religious system gives players the choice to follow one of these gods and gain some bonuses, or to cast spells favored by the gods.

The players can also gain favor with the gods by undertaking missions that concern the gods. Players also have the option to partner or cooperate with other players to achieve specific goals, like building a bridge or completing a larger project to bring forth a bigger kingdom. Through these partnerships, players can foster specialization and build more villages, which can then develop into a well-running kingdom. Players can raid other villages or kingdoms to gain their treasure and claim their land.

1. Lord of The Rings Online

The Lord of the Rings Online - Official Gameplay Trailer

Thanks to Turbine, who developed Lord of the Rings Online, movie fans who long to visit Middle Earth no longer have to wait. The game is set in Middle Earth as designed by J.R.R. Tolkien. Since its release in 2007, landscape expansions have been released up to 2021 when they completed the arch with the Fate of Gundabad. Players choose a character based on the race, class, or adventure they want to pursue.

There are more than a hundred quests to pursue in the game. Characters can follow the quest as their own mission or follow them through to create an Epic storyline. They can use a tracker and a map to navigate the game. Characters can scale up the levels by conquering quests and enemies. Unlike in RPGs, morale points can be earned by rest, food, and music. The crafting system allows players to earn up to three skills and build their own houses to their liking. Just like in the movie and the books, there is a lot to explore in Middle Earth, and thanks to the video game, you can do it from your perspective.
