5 Nintendo Switch Games That Deserve a Sequel

Updated on
Switch

Since 2017, Nintendo has published well over four thousand games for its lofty Switch catalogue. And let's face it, they aren't exactly looking to close the books or disrupt the cogs any time soon, either. In fact, with handheld gaming evolving with each passing year, the Switch has pretty much secured a spot for 2022 and beyond, with enough vacancies to publish thousands of additional titles for its jam-packed library. However, nestled between the brewing works lies the potential for a boatload of sequels, and perhaps even the odd series to boot.

Of course, Nintendo holds all the knowledge when it comes to profitable franchises and promising concepts. And, nine times out of ten, the titles that have gone on to succeed have often been milked, with further sequels eventually falling from the same udder. But then, there are those that failed to make a strong enough impression with the gaming giant. Unfortunately for them, hopes were dashed once Nintendo failed to back their revival. And while some just weren't meant to be — some were, weirdly enough, built to last, even if Nintendo couldn't see it at the time. Just ponder over these five, for example.

5. Ring Fit Adventure

Ring Fit Adventure - Adventure Trailer - Nintendo Switch

It's true, lockdown and handheld gaming sort of went hand in hand over the course of 2020, with fitness video games being one of the biggest substitutes after local gyms closed their doors. And luckily, Ring Fit Adventure was a big pawn on the board back then, with its hefty workout routines all huddled into one fitness bonanza, all of which could be completed from a homey environment. All you needed to take part, of course, was the bolt-on steering wheel and plenty of floor space to whip yourself into shape. And, you know — a fistful of tenacity.

With all of that said, a Ring Fit Adventure sequel never did quite make it to fruition — despite its global success on the Switch front. However, like all popular things — it's only a matter of time before Nintendo nudge the second phase into position, because clearly, it's a profitable franchise with room for growth, and the devs would be pretty foolish to pass up the opportunity to strike for a second shot at the fitness world. But that's just our opinion, anyway.

4. Cuphead

Cuphead - Announcement Trailer - Nintendo Switch

Cuphead is arguably one of the toughest 2D side-scrolling games we've ever laid eyes on, with all the bells and whistles needed to concoct an aneurysm. Of course, it draws you in through its happy-go-lucky sketchbook art style and joyous settings at first, but deep down lies an ocean of curveballs looking to engulf your sanity. But with that said, it's also something that, annoyingly enough, we can't help but glorify and shower with eternal praise.

Of all the games 2017 served up, Cuphead was definitely one of the best on the market. Okay, so it wasn't a Switch exclusive at launch, but it did syphon a lot of its players through the platform. And it's because of the critical acclaim the run and gun title got, that it was only natural for fans to knock for a sequel. However, neither Nintendo nor Studio MDHR chose to shed any light on the notion after the first chapter debuted, meaning the highly anticipated follow-up eventually spiralled into a pipe dream.

3. Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey - Game Trailer - Nintendo E3 2017

As far as iconic faces go — Mario and his long arm of reputable friends practically bag the gold. Thanks to Nintendo's continued devotion to the beloved plumber, the franchise, as a whole, has spanned several decades with more spin-offs than you could shake a stick at. From karting to quiz chapters, lofty 3D platformers to bite-sized side-scrollers, Super Mario has enjoyed quite the career as one of gaming's most cherished franchises. And Odyssey? Well, let's just say a sequel is well overdue.

It's fair to say that Super Mario Odyssey 2 is more than likely sitting on the horizon, with only a thin sheet of ice standing between Nintendo and the common follower. And so, while we can't confirm the future release of the acclaimed Super Mario chapter, we can put all of our chips on the likelihood of it coming our way before 2023. But again, that's just our guess — and one you should definitely take with a pint of salt.

2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

It's been just shy of eight years since Donkey Kong submitted the fifth chapter to the Country timeline, and yet, here we are — still waiting for Nintendo to follow up with the next instalment to the series. But then, considering Donkey Kong has made quite the splash over the decades with some of the best platforming experiences on the market, you can't really blame us for our frustration over the incredibly long hiatus.

While a Donkey Kong 64 reboot has been the talk of the town for the best part of twenty years now, it still hasn't drawn the attention away from Tropical Breeze, which has also come under the line of fire for all the right reasons. Truth be told, the Kong collective tend to receive the short end of the stick when standing next to the likes of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. And that's a shame, truly. We want Donkey Kong — and we want it now, Nintendo.

1. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker - Overview Trailer - Nintendo Switch

Of all the characters on the Super Mario roster, we do have to put Toad at the apex for being the most annoying of them all. And yet, even with the hatred that tends to loom over the character, we still can't help but praise the 2014 spin-off tale, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which was released back in 2014. Weirdly enough, it was something that sort of took us by surprise, and, as a result, ended up being one of the go-to titles for its time, with a Switch port finally following in its success.

Drawing influences from the Super Mario collection and other unique sidekick tales, Captain Toad forged quite the marvel back in 2014, with plenty of puzzle platforming to satisfy the masses. And although the game did eventually port to Switch in 2018, no news ever came to light over a sequel of any kind. Of course, technically speaking, Bowser's Fury was a sequel to some extent, though we wouldn't say that particularly narrowed in on Toad's journey. And so, that's something we'd be intrigued to see Nintendo interpret in the future, should they ever choose to bring Toad back to the drawing board, of course.
