Games Like Demon's Souls

One of the biggest soulslike games to hit our consoles, Demon's Souls has had some jaw-dropping makeovers since its launch, the latest being the Playstation 5 version. Set in a doomed medieval-themed realm, the game features some gameplay mechanics like no other. Players assume the role of a Knight who is caught up in a demonic fog that ravages the land. After being killed and reborn, the Knight is determined to explore all the land in search of power. This will enable him to free the world of the demon infestation it faces. Although there are many other games like Demon's Souls, this one may still be the most intriguing for first-timers and veteran soulslike fans as well.

To get through tougher battles, players can upgrade their customizable Knight using souls. The game only gets darker, with intense battles and ever-shifting gameplay. The list below features similarly awry games that tend to take players through hell-like realms. Check out these five best games like Demon's Souls; who knows, you may end up liking all of them.

5. Bloodborne

It's funny how a pile of bodies can paint the perfect picture of what's to come.

Bloodborne is a Sony and FromSoftware production that seems to have changed the pace for the soulslike genre. The game follows a Hunter through a Gothic city set in the Victorian era named Yharnam. The occupants of this land suffer from a blood-borne affliction. Therefore, the Hunter must find the source of the plague and unfold the city's hidden mysteries. While doing so, they also have to fight against monsters and other creatures.

Unlike most titles on this list, Bloodborne seems to have done away with the traditional shields and muddy-paced battles often seen in soulslike games. Despite the difference in combat, the game is still a good alternative for Demon's Souls due to its level of design and insanely deep twisted narrative.

4. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Games Like Demon's Souls

From Bethesda Game Studios comes The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the fourth entry to The Elder Scrolls series. The game is set in Cyrodiil, a province that is the heart and capital of the land of Tamriel. After the assassination of an emperor, his spirit escapes just before he dies and passes on to the main character, also known as the Amulet of Kings.

Players begin this adventure with their main quest being a tracking mission to find the only remaining heir to the throne, the emperor's lost illegitimate son. Players first select seven major skills, and the remaining abilities remain minor. With each improvement on these major skills, players level up by up to ten points. Like Demon's Souls, the game features a treacherous world filled with dark obstacles. It is up to the Knight to overcome all challenges in their path to achieve set objectives.

3. Ashen

Games Like Demon's Souls

Ashen is an Annapurna and A44 production that follows the same layout as Demon's Souls. Set in a sunless world, the story of Ashen follows an unfortunate character scouring the land for a place to call home. Its competitive and cooperative combat systems make for a tough but exciting game. Players with a taste for heroic adventures may find this game especially intriguing. The ominous open world hosts all types of enemies, including some very tough A.I opponents.

Rather than a player stat-driven upgrading system, the players' growth in Ashen is determined by the type of equipment they hold. For instance, players can use either crafted or collected Talismen to access some game bonus benefits and upgrade their characters. The game features the same key design elements like Demon's Souls; such as exploration, combat and interactions.

2. Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II is the third entry into the Souls series and is a product of Bandai Namco Games. Even though it features in the same universe as its prequels, the story in this version does not align with the previous games in the series. The combat experiences Dark Souls II displays are both challenging and intense. Similar to Demon's Souls, players here get to indulge in innovative gameplay that allows them room for creativity in various battles. They take the role of a zombie-like being, also known as the Bearer of the Curse. Their goal is to break the curse that causes them to remain in the form of the undead.

Besides, the game features dark monsters and vicious bosses that players need to prepare for by upgrading their skills and equipment. Each new environment features twisted monsters of its own, which players have to defend against lest they end up slain. Thanks to the game's designers, the difficulty level can be adjusted for those who are just learning to comprehend the game. Therefore newer players get to enjoy higher defense and amplified damage earlier into the game.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an RPG action adventure released after the 2011, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings game. The games belong to The Witcher series, a franchise based on Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy novels. The story, as always, follows Gerald of Rivia on his Witcher missions. In this case, Gerald pursues a former lover and younger companion; on a journey through the chaotic lands of the Northern Kingdom. Players have to encounter and fight both humans and monstrous creatures on their way to solve the Kingdom's countless concerns.

Gerald wields a variety of weapons, which include a pair of swords [one made of steel and the other silver], a crossbow and some bombs. The purpose of the steel swords is to kill humans, while the silver sword is more effective on monsters. The gameplay involves a series of attacks that allow players to draw their swords at will. For instance, there are two modes of attack; light attacks are fast but cause little damage. However, slow attacks are strong and cause the most damage per hit. Similarly, with the use of mutagens, players can significantly increase their character's magic power. Like Demon's Souls, The Witcher 3 takes players through a chaotic world filled with dangerous dark forces.
