5 Best Characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

The three-decade-long Final Fantasy franchise is back again with a not-so-final action RPG spin-off: Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy. While folks initially thought the game was too edgy, players have since changed their minds. We love the action-heavy combat and dark twist to the Final Fantasy games. Most of all, the Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy out-of-this-world character personalities make the game shine brighter and keep you coming back for more. Plus, as a cool bonus, Square Enix and Team Ninja kept and redefined some returning Final Fantasy fan favorites like Tonberries and Cactuars. So if you’re wondering which characters stand out above the rest, this article has got you covered with a ranking of the five best characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

5. Sophia

5 Best Characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Alongside Jack Garland’s single-minded nature, entirely focused on slaying Chaos, is his teammate, Sophia. Perhaps, we’d appreciate her rage and driven personality a lot more if there wasn’t another character exuding the same single-mindedness almost to a fault. But even so, Sophia is pretty charming. She's the “sure, let’s kill Chaos no matter what, but let’s look good while at it” kind of person.

Sophia is a master Jedi, never shying away from combat. She’s the teammate you can rely on to protect you and slay any enemy that comes your way. For a mission that is not as clear as the dawn, given that Chaos may not even be real, a constantly driven fighter joining the team is highly welcome as she’ll help keep you motivated throughout the game.

4. Jed

Jed is more laid-back than Sophia and Jack Garland’s rageful fighting party. He’s a breath of fresh air, bringing in spices of quirky escape moments to the team. Given the game’s action-heavy, often grueling missions in a world growing darker by the minute, having a carefree teammate light up the mood helps bring the team dynamic to life. He holds the team together in more ways than one and helps extenuate the other characters’ personalities. Though not to take away his combat skills, Jed can take down enemies, and his mission remains “to slay Chaos.” Still, his kind, happy-go-lucky personality always adds comic relief to the Chaos-killing vengeful party and darkness-filled world.  He also seems genuinely caring towards his team and the people they’re trying to save from the Chaos nightmare.

3. Astos

You’ll probably remember Astos from Final Fantasy. He’s the evil king of the Dark Elves and pretty much matches his character from the rather unpleasing designs. Fortunately, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin saw a glow-up that was long overdue, and completely transformed Astos into a charming, oddly likable svelte beauty. He has a history with Jack Garland and claims to know the location of the crystals his team needs.

He’s the evil king of the Dark Elves so it’s not surprising when he was merely tricking them for his own good. Square Enix describes Astos as a beauty with an air of pestilence and it’s easy to see why. He comes out as a likable, friendly elf, only for him to be posing as a trickster and turn on you. Still, merging his opposing character design makes him stand out even more. This places him among the five best characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

2. Captain Bikke

Neatly executing a wildcard character is always a neat trick for the best video game characters. In Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Captain Bikke executes random, unpredictable moves to a tee. Additionally, the best characters of a game are often the ones that leave a lasting impression. So to have, both, a wildcard pirate captain with a bizarre accent with a grand villain-look who features in previous Final Fantasy games is pretty cool.

Previously, he was constantly raiding Pravoka city with his crew. Players’ then had to stop him from causing more damage. He’d often summon pirates to do his bidding. In Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, he’s refined from a stereotypical look to a proper villain. He’s more dangerous and raids an entire town. The boss battle is an upgrade as there are no pirates fighting his battles for him. Along with his massive ax, players would need zeal to defeat him.

In a strange sense, the subtle upgrades to his look and getting rid of the minions place Captain Bikke high up among the five best characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. And even though he only has a one-off encounter with Jack and his team, he leaves a lasting impression that players just can’t get enough of.

1. Jack Garland

5 Best Characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

At the top of the five best characters in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is the main protagonist, Jack Garland. He has many hearts smitten though not for the most obvious reasons. He’s highly single-minded, merely wanting to complete his core mission to slay Chaos. Naturally, players thought of him as arrogant, rude, and closed-off. But farther into the game, it’s easier to understand him and even find his focused nature pretty compelling. He also starts to let loose, especially with his teammate and shows how much he values them so much that he’d willingly protect them from harm. Maybe even die for them?

Of course, he’s the main protagonist, so it might be a reach to kill him, but the fact remains that he’s a diehard team player and a driven leader you can rely on. For a character who gets plenty of screentime, it’s pretty cool that he’s designed to be naturally human and is an exceptionally relatable character to play as.
