Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5?

Updated on

One of video games' oldest rivalries continues on next-gen consoles. The great showdown of who's better, Xbox or PlayStation? It's a question that, as we know, is worth countless lunchtime debates with friends. There's a strong case to be made for both consoles, even though the PlayStation 5 has made further strides in terms of exclusives than the Xbox Series X. Regardless, we're here to assist you to solve the age-old conundrum, which really all boils down to four main factors.

Xbox Series X or Playstation 5?

  • Subscriptions

Something relatively new is that both consoles are now offering subscription-based services to their platforms. This is monthly fee players make in order to get access to a constant circulation of free games and content. PlayStation just came out with a new format for their subscription service for the PS5, while Xbox Series X works off of the Xbox Game Pass, for Microsoft consoles. Aside from a monthly rotation of free games both services work the same, however, exclusives are an incentive included in these services.

  • AAA Exclusives

Exclusives are games, that are released solely for one console. It's also one of the biggest ways Sony and Microsoft persuade players to game on either the PS5 or Xbox Series X consoles. Most likely, if one console has more of your favorite exclusive games then you'll want to side with it. As of right now, there's a better argument to be made for PS5 exclusives, but again it's up to your preference and what you're friends are playing.

  • Gaming with Friends

In relation to exclusives, another issue to consider is whether or not you want to be able to play with your friends. That's because most console games aren't cross-compatible. A few big-name titles, such as Apex Legends and Call of Duty are, but most of the time it costs too much for games to allow console crossplay. So, if you want the leisure of playing with friends, without having to worry about compatibility, go with the majority.

  • Controller Layout

The last key difference is the button scheme for each console's controller. The PS5's controller is fairly symmetrical, while the Xbox Series X's is more for the convenience of finger positioning. You can't go wrong with either, but again it's up to your preference on which is better for you.
