Usual June: Everything We Know

Talking to ghosts is June’s everyday normal. But, little does she know an even more spooky adventure lies ahead. She’ll have to save not only herself but also the world from eternal doom. Usual June looks and sounds unique off the bat. It finds the perfect juxtaposition between the paranormal and teenage summer life.

However, development has only just begun, and there are still pending questions we have about its offerings. Want to know more? Read along with our ‘coming soon’ expose that uncovers everything we know about Usual June.

What is Usual June?

Usual June is an upcoming third-person action game currently in development by Finji. It follows June, presumably during the month of June when summer break kicks off. Several gameplay elements will culminate in a visual spectacle for the books. As the Steam store page describes, it’ll be equal parts ‘terrifying, funny, and sweet.’

Story

June in a colorful environment

Usual June plans to tell an original conspiracy tale. It’ll take players on a rollercoaster of emotions, with them smiling at one point and running for their lives the next. When June closes school for the summer break, she intends to spend the time on a quiet, everyday relaxation spree. You know, the usual working odd jobs, spending time with friends, and, uhm, talking to ghosts.

Yes, some of June’s friends are alive, others dead. And, well, she spends time with her dead friends, chilling with them at the cemetery. But even as she dodges questions from her parents about how she plans to spend her summer break, a deadly mystery awaits. Somehow, June paves the way into an unknown dimension, ‘beyond the pale,’ where treacherous monsters lie and spectral creatures crave blood.

What’s more? Stumbling into the town’s century-spanning secrets and unlocking the shattered multi-dimensional continuum could very well mean the end of the world. Will you save the world in time for dinner with the family?

Check out the Steam official story description below.

It was supposed to be a quiet summer break: working odd jobs, hanging out with her new friends, and talking to ghosts. Instead, June is investigating Fen Harbor’s darkest secrets, fighting spectral creatures, and canceling a space-time cataclysm before existence itself breaks down and everything goes quiet forever.

Follow June and her new besties (alive and dead) as they investigate the town’s century-spanning secret history, explore a shattered multi-dimensional continuum, chill at the cemetery, defend themselves against massive monsters from beyond the pale, and deflect their parents’ questions about what they’re doing after they graduate.

Gameplay

June in basement

Usual June plays in the third person. It’ll infuse action-adventure gameplay elements. Among the key features you can expect to see on launch day are frantic, flexible combat, a witty cast, and an original conspiracy story knitting every element together.

The game seems to alternate between chill, relaxing moments and frantic, life-threatening ones. Here you are, hanging out with your alive and dead friends. You’re chilling at the cemetery or perhaps working odd jobs to make ends meet. Your parents, meanwhile, pressure you about your plans post-graduation. Of course, you’ll be busy avoiding them until you have things figured out.

But while passing the time, you stumble upon an ancient secret history. It leads to a rollercoaster ride into a multi-dimensional continuum. Massive monsters will come at you from beyond the pale. Meanwhile, you’ll be racing against time to cancel a space-time cataclysm threatening to destroy everything. From summertime shenanigans to the end of the world, Usual June promises to deliver an adventure that’s equal parts funny, sweet, and terrifying.

Development

June standing in a room

Developer Finji, in collaboration with Sweet Baby, will be working on Usual June over the coming months (or years). Finji is no stranger to gaming, having published indie hits like Chicory, Night in the Woods, and Tunic. Usual June is their next internal development project, recently announced at the Game Awards event.

As far as graphics go, Finji has gone for a 2D graphic novel character art style immersed in a 3D stylized art aesthetic. It looks stunning in the teaser trailer, as June hacks and slashes her way through spectral creatures in the strange world.

Furthermore, Adam Saltsman has been brought on board, too, as creative director. He’s best known for working on Canabalt and Overland. We know Sweet Baby Inc. has the expert experience, too, having worked on mega-hits like Alan Wake 2, Spider-Man 2, and God of War: Ragnarok

Additionally, BAFTA award-winning Adam Hay is also joining the team as audio director. He’s known for his splendid work on Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and Dreams. Obviously, we have a very capable team spearheading the Usual June project. Now, it’s up to giving them the time and patience to see what they are able to come up with.

Trailer

A teaser trailer for Usual June broke the airwaves at the Game Awards. While the details are scarce, it does paint a good enough picture of what to expect. You can see June talking to ghosts. She masters the courage to hack and slash spectral combat, all the while uncovering a dark secret in the heart of Midtown City. Typically, a coming-of-age story displays your usual supernatural heroic spectacle, hopefully, Usual June is able to carve its unique identity by launch.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

We don’t have an exact release date. Evidently, Usual June is still a long way off, as it’s due to hit the stands sometime in 2025. But, no rush. Finji can take all the time in the world to release a quality product worth your time and money. It seems, too, that Usual June has only been confirmed to launch on PC via Steam. Perhaps other platforms will be confirmed later, as will the editions that’ll be available.

For now, you can add the game to your Steam wishlist to get a notification when it drops. Alternatively, follow the official social handle here, or check back with us for future updates.
