Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance — Everything We Know

Atlus fans, specifically Megami Tensei and Persona, are in for quite a treat this year. As it turns out, we aren’t entirely done fighting evil in post-apocalyptic Tokyo. In fact, you’ll want to brace yourself for a grand return to Shin Megami Tensei V’s modern-day Tokyo setting sometime soon. Oh, and bring your best demon-fusing tactics. This time, we’re returning to the Netherworld with a nasty craving for vengeance.

If you haven’t played the latest installment in Atlus’ iconic franchise, Shin Megami Tensai V, don’t worry. You’ll soon get your fair chance to battle it out against demons in an upcoming ‘definitive edition’ called Vengeance. Shin Megami Tensai V was launched in 2021 to critical global acclaim. So, it makes sense that the upcoming definitive edition will be just as good, perhaps way better.

But what exactly can you expect to see in the new game? What’s new? Do we have a release date and trailer available? Here’s everything we know about the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.

What is Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance?

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an upcoming role-playing game. It’ll be a definitive edition of the previously released Shin Megami Tensei V (2021). Vengeance plans to include the original story told in Shin Megami Tensei V. However, it’ll also add a brand-new storyline featuring new demons, locations, and choices to make. Moreover, you’ll have access to the DLC content from the original Shin Megami Tensei V, including demons and quests.

Vengeance awaits! Newcomers and veterans alike will venture down two-story paths. The first, Canon of Creation, will include the original story told in Shin Megami Tensei V. However, the second story path, Canon of Vengeance, will feature a brand new storyline, including new characters, locations, demons, and choices to make. Here’s an overview of the official story to expect via Nintendo:

When a grisly murder scene in modern-day Tokyo blocks our protagonist’s walk home, an unplanned detour leaves him buried and unconscious. He awakens in a new Tokyo, a wasteland ravaged by the apocalypse now called Da’at… but before bloodthirsty demons can claim his life, a savior emerges, and the two of them unite to become a mighty being, neither human nor demon: a Nahobino.

With newfound power, the protagonist ventures through Da'at, an enigmatic realm filled with mythical deities and demonic tyrants in constant conflict for survival. Searching for answers, the protagonist must forge his own path in a battle between angels and demons to dictate the fate of the world.

Vengeance will use Shin Megami Tensei V’s gameplay, including the same battle system, demon fusion, and exploration. However, you can expect new changes that increase player immersion. A total of 270 demons will feature in the new game, including your favorite foes from Shin Megami Tensei V as well as new creatures.

Each demon will have unique skills. You’ll also have more ways to interact with them. Furthermore, you’ll explore new changes like being able to rotate the game’s minimap, speed up cutscenes, and save the game from anywhere, among many more. Check out the key features to expect in the final game via Nintendo:

Key Features

  • The Definitive Version of Shin Megami Tensei V – Fully evolved with stunning visuals for modern consoles, the dark lore, unnerving atmosphere, and beautiful and monstrous demons are back and better than ever. Massively expanded with new areas, demons, and music, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance features more accessible gameplay, an improved battle system, new demon experiences, and greater field exploration.
  • A Tale of Vengeance or Creation – Which path will you choose? As order and chaos crumble around you, forge your own path to dictate the fate of humanity.
  • Explore a Post-Apocalyptic World – Battle through a decimated Tokyo, reduced to an expansive wasteland and overrun by mythical demons. Roam across wide, open areas and explore new locations for life-saving items or encounter hundreds of familiar demons and dozens of new ones to battle or befriend as allies.

Development

Developer Atlus is currently working on developing and publishing Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. The team wasn’t able to implement all the ideas they had for Shin Megami Tensei V. So, vengeance is a way to bring those unexplored ideas to the world. They plan to flesh out the relationship between the Snake God and the Bull God some more, for example. Specifically, since SMTV: V focuses on the Bull God’s perspective, they want to shift the story arc to the Snake God’s point of view in the form of a ‘tale of revenge by the oppressed.’
