Welcome to the Game 3 Review (PC)

Alternating between tabs on the dark web in search of clues to prevent a home invasion was never going to be a wholesome experience. Frankly, the “dark side of the moon”—the back corridor between social media and the infamous online cortex—was always going to be a problem. It was also going to be a huge challenge, especially for those unaccustomed with the windows to the “other side.” Without a firewall, a technological blockade, or a comprehensive manual, it was a lost cause right from the get-go.

Welcome to the Game III, similar to its predecessor, was always going to upset the nerves and ruffle a few psychological feathers. It didn’t need much to set the mood, either. If anything, it had all of the pieces of the puzzle to brew a complete cocktail of nightmare fuel, with a dense atmosphere, a barricade of perplexing tabs, and a deadly consequence that was so severe that death would have been considered an “easy” way out. It only needed a dark room, a computer, and a web of perplexing challenges.

If you’re unfamiliar with Reflect Studios’ long-standing series, Welcome to the Game is a hacking-based horror game in which you, the owner of a rather large debt, are forced to pledge your savings, your life, and your sanity to “The Game”—a somewhat sadistic mind game in which the goal is simple yet mentally insurmountable. Rather than trying to pay back your debt with mere credit and IOUs, you find yourself in a rather harrowing situation, with deadly consequences that pose life-threatening risks. A line of credit can keep your head above water, but you’ll need to wedge your foot is the door to survive the night.

Welcome to the Game is spread out across two paths, with each one requiring you to carefully observe both the digital world and the physical space. Online, you find yourself in the midst of a labyrinth of codes and puzzles, each of which contain vital information about your debt and how you can absolve yourself through questionable means. But on the other side, you have a target on your back. Subtle sounds and cues in the atmosphere illuminate another aspect of your debt. If you aren’t able to build a firewall and prevent viscous attacks from potential intruders and NPCs, then you have yet another issue to address. And so, what you have here is a juggling act. Puzzles and codes light the way forward, but deadly curveballs do all in their power to keep you from knuckling in on a solution.

Given the subject matter and dark web boundaries, Welcome to the Game can be an incredibly unnerving affair. And it isn’t even that the world is brimming with problems; it’s that everything you encounter is purposely designed to test you. It could be that you make a bit of progress, but at no point does it tell you if you’re working for the greater good, or if you’re merely prolonging the inevitable, fumbling for clues in all of the wrong places.

Of course, fumbling for clues is partly the problem, as is it something that you spend most of your time doing in Welcome to the Game. With hidden keys, you can muster up the in-game currency to unlock a better firewall—a perk that ultimately prevents hackers and potential killers from breaching your line of defense and claiming you. But, there’s a catch: you can unlock extra security measures that can remove a pawn from the board, but at the expense of a secondary perk. The question you have to answer is simple: which is more important, paying back your debts as quickly as possible, or eliminating other hackers?

If not for its checkpoint system, Welcome to the Game would be a pretty overwhelming experience. Given the complexity of the puzzles and the simple fact that you not only have the burden of knowing that there are people who want to bring you harm, but that you are also working against other hackers to secure clues and advance your security, you do have a lot of work here. Lest we also forget that, in a similar vein as I’m on Observation Duty, you are also required to analyze surveillance footage and keep outsiders from entering your private property. Again, a lot of work to consider here.

Minced with several hacking mini-games, firewall upgrades and strategic nodes, Welcome to the Game stands out as a firm but entertaining experience. I’ll admit that, while it can be awfully difficult to find a foothold on the dark web, the game does make a good effort to keep your inner sleuth at work, with random encounters, daring jump scares, and unpredictable situations of a technical nature that serve only to make you question your surroundings. To that end, I have to say that, atmospherically, Welcome to the Game delivers a brilliantly balanced experience to the table, with a sturdy challenge that, if tackled correctly, can feel all the more rewarding to solve.

I have to praise Welcome to the Game’s originality more than anything. As a game that blends hacking with psychological horror, it immediately stands out as a unique experience that dares to wax poetic with two distinct forms of storytelling. In any other case, it probably wouldn’t work. But here, both areas balance each other out surprisingly well, with two hands contributing to a well-oiled machine that combines daringly strong dark web exploits with observational thrills. It’s challenging, intimidating, and yet, also a lot of fun to work through. Or at least, it can be, provided that you can breach the firewall.

Verdict

Welcome to the Game III blends two distinct forms of thrill-invoking entertainment to create a powerhouse of a hacking-based psychological horror. With a trove of codes, puzzles, and observation-skewered conflicts to keep you forever fumbling over your own self-inflated firewall, it stands tall as a genuinely fun, albeit highly challenging experience that will keep both your nerves and your fingers twitching long after the final security breach.

Of course, Welcome to the Game isn’t the kind of experience that you would look to for a quick spot-the-difference puzzler. Given that it’s both highly intoxicating and visually overwhelming, it can pose as quite a headache. If you can look beyond its technologically claustrophobic nature, however, then you should find something to enjoy here. Take it all with a huge grain of salt, though. Welcome to the Game might be satisfying to slug through in short bursts, but it’s also a game that’s perfectly capable of pushing a lot of the wrong buttons.
