Summer Seaside Search Key Art

There are two types of people who pick up and play a game like Summer Seaside Search: the folks who genuinely enjoy scrubbing through simple spot the difference puzzles, and those who see them as short-term achievement boosters. While not strictly shovelware, it is a game that harbors two distinct groups, one of which views beginner-friendly search-and-find indies as a means to an end. And it’s a shame, really, because beneath its trophy-stacked benchmark, Summer Seaside Search is something of a lovably crafted puzzle game. It’s a simple one I’ll admit, but it’s also teeming with all of the charming qualities of a family-oriented pastime.

It’s best not to think of a game like Summer Seaside Search as a game-changing, accolade-hogging experience. It isn’t. If anything, it’s a short, sweet and wholesome journey that you can sweep beneath the rug in thirty minutes or so. With just thirty stages to work through, you can more or less decipher its differences, claim all of the rewards, and scoot on over to the next chapter in a single sitting. But that’s all that you need from a game like this: a quick, affordable way to unwind for a little while. It won’t break the bank, and it probably won’t leave you with any everlasting memories, for that matter. That being said, it ought to put a smile on your face, and that alone is enough to warrant a quick pitstop at its beachside haven.

Summer Seaside Search Gameplay

There isn’t a lot to prod at here, given that Summer Seaside Search is, when all’s said and done, a game that wears its heart on its sleeve and leaves out the ink and unnecessary cosmetics. A spot the difference puzzler at its core, the game tasks you with working through a collection of beachfront-based images, spotting the differences between two panels, and slowly working towards the final page in a scrapbook. And I’ll be honest with you, most of said panels are pretty straightforward, both visually and mechanically. Like a children’s puzzle book, each chapter presents you with a colorful drawing, a checklist, and a trophy system that rewards you for each puzzle that you complete. And believe me when I say, there are some incredibly easy achievements to score here; a single chapter rewards upwards of 200G for Xbox users, for example.

There’s a pleasant art style here that captures the essence of summertime culture. From the seaside romances to the family outings, the prying seagulls to the beach volleyball matches — Summer Seaside Search leans into all of the usual aspects of a traditional beach vacation, giving them a well-needed splash of color and a harmonic atmosphere to broaden the appeal. A chime, a whistle, and a melodic tone carry the story, and the images speak for themselves. The rest, really, relies on player input and your natural ability to recognize small differences in the field. And when I say small differences, I mean the usual suspects that you would find etched into a puzzle scrapbook, like inflatable balls, colors, and mismatched patterns, for example. It’s all generic stuff, yet stuff that just so happens to work.

As I said, there isn’t a great deal of depth in the gameplay itself. As a classic scrub-and-highlight game at heart, the general purpose is to analyze two panels, hover a cursor over the missing ingredient, and remove ten objects from the image. After that, it’s merely the case of flicking through to the next panel, and then repeating the same process. And of course, being a child-friendly game, you also have the option to skip each panel and move on to the next. Not that you need to, given that each of the in-game puzzles are pretty easy to solve.

Challenge Mode in Summer Seaside Search

Above all, Summer Seaside Search is a lovingly crafted palate cleanser that can easily keep you entertained for a little under an hour, nothing more, nothing less. With that, I wouldn’t stroll into it with high expectations. It gets the job done with the tools it has at its disposal, and then it makes a swift exit and leaves the floor open for another chapter to take the reins. If you can appreciate it for these small moments of joy that it brings to the shoreline, then you should be able to find enough to sway the tide in your favor.

While it’s unlikely that Summer Seaside Search will appeal to the broader demographic, there is something here that ought to resonate with the younger player. Either that, or with those who enjoy laid-back puzzle games that don’t require a lot of effort to solve. At just thirty minutes in length and without any alternate endings, secrets, or bonus levels to unlock, though, it might not make the asking price seem worthwhile. For achievement hunters, it’s a bit of a no brainer. But for fans of puzzle games who want a thicker template and more depth to work with, a lack of content here is likely to rock the apple cart, so to speak. Swings and roundabouts, you know how it is.

Verdict

Summer Seaside Search Gameplay

Summer Seaside Search is an ideal spot the difference puzzler for both younger players and achievement hunters alike, with enough panels, themes, and hidden details to keep the target demographic joyfully engaged for the short haul. Although it’s without the same level of depth and complexity as a big-budget puzzle sequence, it does make for a charming budget-friendly palate cleanser that can both teach newcomers the basics and give fledgling trophy seekers something to look forward to. Maybe that’s enough, maybe it isn’t.

It’s no secret that search-and-find games are becoming increasingly common in the indie puzzle field. With that, the odds of seeing a game like Summer Seaside Search as a one-of-a-kind thing are depressingly slim. Still, if you have the coin to spare and an eye for laid-back puzzlers, then you ought to give this vacation a chance. Just don’t expect a brilliant game, for where it excels in cozy compositions, it sadly falls short on technical complexity. That’s a spot the difference game for you though, I suppose.
