Japanese Rural Life Adventure Review (Mobile & PC)

Updated on
Villager crossing over bridge

If Japanese Rural Life Adventure opts for anything at all, it chooses to plod along the scenic route—a natural course that favors cherry blossoms in bloom, candlelit gardens in the spring, and the sweet yet homely scent of soy sauce on a hot stove in winter. It removes the distractions—the constant need to find stable ground in a booming economy or establish a financially viable business to stay afloat in an oppressive environment. Instead, it favors the calmness of the countryside—the soft ripples that beat against the fishing dock; the local traders who make visits to your home to ponder your wears like clockwork; the communal harmony; and above all, the serenity of a quaint village that idolizes life in the slow lane and shuns anything that might be considered even remotely aggressive. And it’s here, beside the beating heart of a wholesome world of outstanding natural beauty and tranquil pixel-crafted imagery, where Japanese Rural Life Adventure rolls out its carpet for you to wipe your feet and hang your coat. It doesn’t demand anything of you; it asks only that you lean into your restless soul and embrace a life of peace, love, and happiness.

Like Animal Crossing or Stardew ValleyG-MODE’s take on the cozy life simulation experience opts to abandon the manic nature of big cities and bombastic adventures and, with the aid of a sweetly crafted pixel palette, shifts its focus to a calmer, more wholesome affair that caters to the needs of those with a soft spot for lighter gameplay mechanics and gratifying work with pleasurable payouts. With the blossom-soaked panoramas and vibrant shrubbery of Japan’s rural boroughs at the heart of its world, it draws you in to begin life anew without the need to endure long and painfully taxing journeys that provide little more than additional quests with no incentive or sentimental value. It brings you in, not as a globe-trotting hero, but as a regular citizen who wishes only to physically remove themselves from the hustle and bustle of the city and indulge in rural lifestyle and local customs.

Of course, the word cozy immediately springs to mind whenever I so much as glance at a game like Japanese Rural Life Adventure. Honestly, it’s difficult not to associate it with such a word, especially when it comes with the traditional trappings of a “cozy”-like RPG—the cooking, fishing, trading, and frequent home improvements, for example. In Japanese Rural Life Adventure, almost all of these boxes are checked. The only thing that sets this platform apart from others of its ilk, of course, is the culture. And if you aren’t overly familiar with Japanese etiquette, then frankly it doesn’t matter, as the game itself acts as something of an encyclopedia for the average ne’er do well, too. But, we’ll talk more on that later.

If Japanese Rural Life Adventure is anything at all, it’s a peaceful, chore-heavy life and farming simulator in which you, the weary traveler with a heart of gold, are given the opportunity to bathe in the idyllic nature of the countryside. As the protagonist in this cozy tale, you have the power to craft your own storybook in a manner that suits your needs, whether it’s with as little as a fishing hook, an allotment of ingredients, or in the arms of the local townsfolk who frequently visit your homestead to bury their wishes in your capable hands. Frankly, it doesn’t matter which path you choose here, because if there’s one thing that the game does incredibly well, it’s ensuring that you’re never the victim of a monotonous cycle. It’s just you, a home that requires a well-needed overhaul, and a handful of tasks that need tending to as and when you so desire to tackle them. Alas, there are no time limits to adhere to here; it’s just the passing of the seasons, the calm, and an open book that grants you permission to write the dialogue and interpret the sketches.

On paper, Japanese Rural Life Adventure sounds like the perfect cup of green tea to soothe your heart and compliment your afternoon. And, for the record, it is. Here, there aren’t any barriers that prevent you from exploring the local customs and gelling with the community. That said, there are, what with it being a game that bases its entire premise around Japanese culture, a lot of things to learn as a foreign player. For example, if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology, then you might struggle to complete missions, several of which require you to utilize local Japanese methods to overcome. Thankfully, the game does offer a useful tool that helps non-native speakers to understand the customs and etiquette. It isn’t always transparent, but it does provide a solid insight into what you should be doing and how you should approach it.

Beneath Japanese Rural Life Adventure’s cultural roots lies a genuinely unique and beautifully crafted pixel art style that’s highly reminiscent of old-school sprites and NES cult classics. With a harmonic score and a world that boasts hundreds of hours of content, including hobbies, missions, and renovation projects, there’s a huge amount to fall in love with here. Granted, the mechanics aren’t all that complex, as it’s more or less a point-and-click affair that primarily relies on strafing to the left or right. But, if anything, its simplicity adds to the wholesome nature of the journey itself. More to the point, it’s an incredibly easy game to roll with, despite it having a few language barriers that can prevent you from snowballing on the rarest of occasions. Yet, that’s a small price to pay for an otherwise beautiful piece of art that has a lot of great things going for it. It’s cute, calm, and about as laid-back as you could possibly imagine. It’s Stardew Valley with a helping of cherry blossoms. What more could you want?

If you can bypass the language barrier and the local customs that Japanese Rural Life Adventure holds dear, then you shouldn’t have a hard time falling in love with the serenity and the idyllic qualities of this beautiful pixel-crafted world and all of its wholesome touches. With hundreds of hours’ worth of missions, hobbies, and renovation projects to complete, the odds of finding a place to formulate your own rural dream are irresistibly high here. And that’s great, truly, as the game gracefully provides more than enough material to keep you busy for days, weeks, even months. It isn’t as big as Stardew Valley I’ll admitbut where it lacks in depth and complexity it certainly makes up for with its rich cultural ties and authentic embellishments.
