Jackbox Party Pack 11: Legends of Trivia

There’s a saying in our family: “if in doubt, just stick on Jackbox.” It has become such a frequent saying, in fact, that it often feels as if we’re constantly volleying back and forth between one of several Party Packs. We don’t feel doubt; we’re merely familiar with what we know and what we want. Perhaps it’s a comfort thing—a “safe” option that you know works. Even if you’ve run out of steam, or if you’ve exhausted all of your Quiplash talents, you still have something else to explore. Heck, we know the games like the back of our hands. And yet that doesn’t seem to matter, for where there’s a social gathering, there’s always Party Pack to accommodate the collective. I guess that’s just the Jackbox mantra.

As luck would have it, Jackbox Party Pack 11 has even more kindling to further push our agenda. Alas, it isn’t just another soft reboot with newer iterations of past mini-games; it’s a whole different ballgame—a fresh and original expansion that features five more boxes, none of which lean towards old habits. Well, there is a trivia game that looks a lot like its counterparts — but that’s something that we can forgive, given that it is, first and forefront, a couch-oriented trivia series. But even with a familiar box, Jackbox Party Pack 11 still finds various ways to continue reinventing the wheel, not only with five exciting mobile-based games, but with an entire host of hilarious jokes, witty remarks, and relatable moments that cater to most, if not all of those who find themselves behind said wheel.

Suspective mini-game

If you’re unfamiliar with the Jackbox saga, then one can only describe it as a social party game in which up to eight players use their mobile phones or tablets to participate in various mini-games. In each Party Pack you have access to five activities, some of which invite you to wage war in trivia tournaments, some of which ask you to design apparel with your own drawings. And then there are the other events—the games that require you to formulate lyrics for a hit rap song; the off-the-cuff feuds that provoke you into thinking outside of the box to either lie, steal, or occasionally murder your opponents; and the events that ask you to unearth the truth in a series of wildcard statements. There’s a lot more to unpack here, but you get the idea. In a nutshell, players enter their prompts or answers, and others vote for who they think is best.

Jackbox Party Pack 11, much like previous releases, adds another batch of mini-games to the ever-rolling catalog. In addition to a new trivia game—Legends of Trivia, a whimsical monster-oriented adventure with daring questions and tabletop role-playing-like infusions—the Party Pack also features Doominate, a word-focused game that uses brash prompts to alter an otherwise innocent story; Hear Say, a voice-driven episodic tale that uses your voice prompts to present bizarre scenarios; Cookie Haus, a sketchbook-like activity that caters to a culinary twist; and Suspectives, a social deduction game where players must figure out who is hiding their true identity whilst the suspect defends it. Again, a lot to unpack here. That being said, if you’re vaguely familiar with the Jackbox timeline, then you ought to know how a lot of these activities work. In short, it’s a bit of what you might have seen before, only with new themes, prompts, and outcomes.

Legends of Trivia

To call Party Pack 11 a bubbling cauldron of creative facets feels like an insult. Frankly, it’s a lot more than that. Although still fairly simple in terms of gameplay and its prompt-heavy format, Jackbox continues to outshine its party-based peers with all sorts of unique features, with original intellectual property that can easily make each session feel like a new adventure. The small talk between prompts; the insurmountable odds; and the creative process itself that fills your screen with the glitz and glamor of fantastical action and laughably satisfying leaderboard moments. It’s all part of that signature Jackbox charm, and something that bleeds through the latest installment incredibly beautifully.

Suffice it to say, with a host who knows how tickle you with classic dad humor and a seemingly bottomless collection of bad jokes and annoyingly relatable one-liners, Jackbox Party Pack 11 clearly has the voice to keep you entertained for weeks, months, even years. Granted, such high caliber comes with a rather costly sacrifice, and the eleventh entry in the series doesn’t shy away from that admission price. Having said that, for the amount of content that you have here, as well as all of the replay value that you can scrape out of it, I’d say that it more than justifies the cost. The fact that only one person needs a copy of the game, too, makes it that much more appealing.

Verdict

Hear Say mini-game

Jackbox Party Pack 11 takes the beloved saga to even greater heights with five fresh additions to the catalog, as well as an entire host of original concepts, jokes, and evergreen activities that should make for a fitting compliment for any good social gathering. It doesn’t matter if you’re unfamiliar with the series, or even if you lack the wit and backbone to conjure quick and effective quips on the fly. Simply, you just need a smartphone, a tablet, and a willingness to roll with the punches.

If Party Pack 11 is anything to go by, then it’s safe to say that there are some brilliant times ahead for both fans of the saga and newcomers to the lofty timeline. And, to be honest, I’m curious to see where it plants its roots next, truly. I’m only hoping that the twelfth chapter in the anthology is as equally entertaining as the eleventh. Evidently, a new standard has been set here. It’s merely the question of, can Jackbox Games go one step further to deliver an even greater party experience in the forthcoming quarter? Whatever happens, we’ll be crossing our fingers in anticipation for the next sequence. Oh, and busting out a few quips whilst we’re at it. We’re still glued to Quiplash, clearly.
