These aspects combine to make the game feel like an experience that pulls from the most endearing of adventure games. All the while incorporating its social elements that feel similar to many stellar RPGs & JRPGs. The game also encapsulates these elements while retaining a unique visual style and aesthetic that shines throughout. With that out of the way, here is our review of Dungeons of Hinterberg.

An Atmospheric AdventureRowing through the water in Dungeons of Hinterberg.

For the first section of our review of Dungeons of Hinterberg, we will cover the game’s atmospheric adventure-inspired elements. One of the stars of the show in this title is the world. This can be seen in how the player traverses and interacts with the characters within it. From the game’s opening moments, it becomes clear that the sense of immersion and scale of the game will be carried throughout the journey.

In doing so, Dungeons of Hinterberg manages to not only make each of its dungeons & locations feel incredibly well-fleshed out and well-realized. This is only aided by an astoundingly ambitious design. This element of the game’s design, when combined with its more old-school approach to game feel and sense of freedom makes for a great adventure from beginning to end.

Giving the player the ability to tackle tasks however they wish is wonderful. This ensures that no matter what kind of gameplay style you choose to employ, all playstyles are valid. Take the game as fast or slow as you wish. What you will find here is surely enough to whet your appetite for quality content & questing. For players who enjoy taking their time, however, the game also features a surprising amount of depth to its world & systems, which is wonderful.

In addition, the game features several different overworlds for players to explore, each of which adds its own sense of belonging and flair to the game’s world. This is greatly aided by the game’s visual style, making each location vibrant and tangible as you explore it. The open world of the game is executed wonderfully, and as we will cover in our next section, it is teeming to the brim with promise and activities for the player to complete.

A Wonderful WorldA character wielding a sword in Dungeons of Hinterberg.

The world of Dungeons of Hinterberg is one of its most important aspects. Each of the landscapes and biomes that the player traverses becomes an integral part of their journey. This can be felt in not only the game’s layout and general flow but also in how it’s structured. As the player progresses throughout the game, they will encounter new areas and challenges to discover.

This also passively strengthens the core gameplay elements of Dungeons of Hinterberg. This is due to the variety and opprotunitiy for progression to be found as you make your way through the game. Aiding in this sense of depth and immersion, is the social elements of the game. As you maneuver throughout the Alps, you will discover many characters to meet and aid.

The questing system in the game also adds a layer of depth to the game. As the player completes more of these quests, they will unlock new abilites. This, can in turn, use to face more fearsome enemies and challenging content. Coupling the player’s power progression with the social elements in the game does a great job of employing the same gameplay philosophies of games like the Persona series. This makes the game a sure-fire hit for JRPG fans.

Each of these characters does a fantastic job of not only shaping the player’s journey. With each of the locations adding their own layer of depth. This also rewards the player for going off of the beaten path. This is done in order to discover new activities and ways to strengthen their character. This freedom gives Dungeons of Hinterberg a wonderful sense of openness that is accompanied by a sort of cozy nature throughout.

For the next section, we will cover the wide array of systems that help Dungeons of Hinterberg feel unique in its own right. The game boasts a seriously fantastic social system. This system allows the player to immerse themselves in the game’s world and characters. Each of the characters and locations is shaped by their social elements as well.  This system is also structured as part of a day/night cycle, allowing players a way to weigh out their time and options.

To help with this sense of bond, the game allows players to take photos with each of the locals in the game. This not only gives more creative-minded players a chance to create some stellar shots. But it also ensures that each of the locals stay fresh in the player’s mind.  Another magnificent system that we see at play in the game is the combat system.

This feeling of fluidity is also helped by the game’s combat animations. Every move you can pull off in the game feels special in its own way, giving the player plenty of options when facing enemies. The traversal mechanics also help cut down on dead travel time.

The combat in the game is extremely satisfying and fluid, making for a visual treat no matter the scale of the encounter. Also, the snowy backdrops the game offers allows each of the combat scenarios pop with color. Simply put, this vibrancy is at the heart of what makes Dungeons of Hinterberg‘s combat stand out.

In the next section of our review, we will cover the stylistic and foundational choices that make Dungeons of Hinterberg such a great title. Firstly, the visual style of the game lends itself well to the brand of fast-paced yet intentional action. When coupled with the strength of the game’s core mechanical systems, this makes for an experience that players won’t forget anytime soon.

Everything about the game, from its traversal system, to its flashy combat, oozes style. This style is prevalent throughout the game, permeating through each of its four phenomonal areas. One aspect of the game that makes this element shine the brightest is the game’s dungeon design.

Each level and each layer of every one of the game’s dungeons feels full of intentionality in their design, as well as unique in their layouts. This makes the game feel rather expansive, giving players plenty of content to chew on, so to speak. Also, the core themes and mechanics of the game’s dungeons do a fantastic job of incorporating the gameplay elements present from top to bottom.

Another core aspect of the game that showcases this, perhaps better than any other, is its puzzle mechanics. The puzzle mechanics in the game do a great job of balancing accessibility with difficulty. All around, the style and substance of Dungeons of Hinterberg are just some of the best aspects of a downright fun title.

For the final section of our review of Dungeons of Hinterberg, we will cover the journey throughout the game as a whole. The layers of depth and influence that this game wears so proudly can be felt from the game’s opening moments. This holds true all the way till its thrilling conclusion. The choice of incorporating social elements alongside a thrilling action-adventure is marvelous. This not only does a fantastic job of giving the player’s actions a sense of tangible weight. But it also strengthens the game’s staying power.

The balance of puzzle mechanics also add in this sense of accomplishment. The further you get into the game, the more powers and abilites you can implement in your travels. The traversal mechanics also play a huge role in the game’s sense of adventure and gravitas. Every area of the game manages to shine in its own way. This is a testament to the solidity of the game’s foundation.

As the player progresses from area to area, they will meet new characters to interact with and aid. This gives a tangible sense of belonging to these characters. All the while giving a sense of scale to the world around you. Maneuvering throughout the journey manages to ebb and flow in a way that feels satisfying, no matter the pace of gameplay you prefer.
