College Football 27 Review (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, & PC)

It’s a different vibe altogether playing College Football 27 versus Madden NFL 26. It feels like you have more room to make mistakes and learn from them. Even though the pressure to still drive up your player and coach’s stats remains headstrong. After an 11-year hiatus from the NCAA Football series, I’m certainly glad that EA Sports has remained faithful to the series, with the launch of College Football 25, College Football 26, and now it’s time to see how high their aim has landed in the latest iteration. 

The good news is that College Football 27 is hands-down the best the series has been. Yes, even including previous NCAA entries. The gameplay and graphics have received both minor tweaks and major improvements that you cannot simply wave off. Even within the first few minutes of booting up the game, you’ll enjoy a UI that considers your experience and takes it to heart. A comprehensive yet seamless integration of the skills training and game modes menu that opens up to the life of a high school footballer turned college recruit. 

The Dynasty and Road to Glory game modes themselves have also received considerable attention in their features-on-offer. However, gameplay is probably where you’ll appreciate EA Sports’ efforts a lot more in ensuring that they provide the most authentic, smooth, and immersive experience. My College Football 27 review highlights my thoughts, both good and bad, so you can have a better idea of whether it’s the right game for you. 

For the Better

A few improvements make the College Football 27 experience a lot more enjoyable. Some barely make a dent in your overall experience. Meanwhile, others are questionable changes that EA Sports itself has since removed from the game altogether. Let’s start with the positives. 

It’s straightforward enough to win or lose games in Dynasty mode. However, College Football 27 adds another layer of challenge through Athletic Director (AD) expectations. These dynamic objectives vary depending on the school you choose, making that decision one of the most important you’ll make in Dynasty. A prestigious program may offer an easier path to victories thanks to its stronger roster, but it also comes with far greater expectations. Your school’s leadership won’t take kindly to falling short, whether that’s missing the National Championship or failing to finish in the top five. If you don’t meet those expectations, your Dynasty Points (DP) will take the biggest hit.

Remember, your DP matters a great deal in how fast you progress, although this, too, has received some strategic revamps. You still have the freedom to choose how to spend your DP. But you have to be smart about whether to spend them on upgrading your facilities, hiring more staff, or on NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) for your team. NIL is pretty important for managing your budget, recruiting fresh high school prospects, and retaining current players on your roster. Overall, your team’s performance relies heavily on your strategic navigation of AD expectations and DP, ensuring that your team’s performance doesn’t suffer. 

Take Pause

It’s a lot of managerial stuff, and the presentation might put some players off. How complex the stats and menu navigation can seem, especially when they feel like tracking spreadsheets. I believe, though, that some players live for this kind of sports management simulation, especially with how realistic the NIL system is to the real-world. 

Star players need motivation to stick with you, even in the real-world. And it’s up to you to ensure that they remain happily compensated. And even if you strategize multiple seasons around raising your team’s NIL, your players may still choose to transfer to top-tier programs like Alabama and Florida State. How then do you handle losing three-star recruits to another team? It might seem easy enough to choose top-tier programs from the start. However, the reward of building a low-tier program to a higher status, no matter how many seasons it takes, feels satisfying. 

There do seem to be balancing issues, where the top-tier programs always seem to enjoy the perks of more prestige, despite how much effort you put into meeting your AD’s expectations. Some of these issues, I attribute to the microtransactions that were added to the single-player Dynasty and Road to Glory modes. They’ve since been removed. And my God, I hope that EA Sports doesn’t make the same mistake again to include microtransactions where they needn’t be. Still, it makes sense that progression would take forever to encourage you to pay up. 

Eye Test is a Pass

In any case, I still recommend starting small. So, you can even re-acquaint yourself with the old and new gameplay mechanics in College Football 27. You might want to choose a lesser-known team and take the time to build a strong roster. The joy in sports management is planning and adjusting tactics as you assess trends across multiple seasons, before you can confidently bulldoze your way into the College Football Playoffs and win the National Championship.

Rest assured, the graphics and presentation are a joy to behold. College Football 27 looks absolutely fun and immersive. You have more detailed jerseys and equipment for the players, and their animations and movement look unique to player tendencies. They’re more lifelike and feel like controlling the actual players. From the increased variety of entrances to the dance moves and celebrations, it’s a jolly time. 

It extends to the stadiums, which you can fully customize, from the grass to the crowd and goalposts. Before, the focus was on top-tier programs. But now, all the schools you experiment with give you the freedom to adjust their appearance and style. The lighting and dynamic weather effects create a more realistic and immersive match day, especially when it starts to rain out of nowhere, or it gets windy, and you have to adapt. While the commentaries still have their annoying repetition and could still use a deeper analysis of big plays for immersion, they do a good enough job to cement the football season atmosphere. 

Overall, match days look and feel electric, with marching bands jamming to pop and hip-hop hits and spectacular drone shows. The half-time shows are no longer missable. 

Road to Glory

Dynasty has been the most popular game mode in the College Football series, followed by Road to Glory and Ultimate Team mode. I suppose it’s why the most notable improvements are in Dynasty mode, not so much Road to Glory. Meanwhile, Ultimate Team remains largely the same, choked by microtransactions, but still catering to its niche card-collecting players.

There’s one notable change in Road to Glory, which adds the Tight End (TE), Edge Rusher (EDGE), and Free Safety (FS) positions to the existing Quarterback (QB), Halfback (HB), Wide Receiver (WR), Cornerback (CB), and more. Not all playable positions are created equal. Yet, I appreciate the variety that gives you more customizable options for building your player.

Worthy Opponent

The goal for single-player sports games is to have the opponent behave as intelligently as humans. Happy to report that College Football 27 is the closest the series has gotten to worthy opponents thus far. Even if you’ve been a pro in College Football 26, the new game will test your mettle and push you to learn and adapt. Opponents’ reactions are more realistic. When carving a path across the field, they tactfully dodge tackles and figure out cutback lanes. You can tell opponents are situationally aware. Even the opposing coach will lean more heavily on your weaker players. Or play more aggressively on your stronger edge players. I especially love that the animations also reflect more aggressive contests for the ball. 

Meanwhile, your gameplay options are just as strategic, making for unpredictable, more exciting plays. More specifically, the timing-based catching, which takes a little getting used to. However, it does add depth to your plays, focusing on how accurate your timing is. Mistiming leads to more contested catches, which makes for more exciting plays. When players identify smarter routes and zone coverage, and the AI is unpredictable, no longer holding zones, but anticipating moves and even bluffing before returning to coverage, the matches end up being more explosive and even replayable.

College Football 27 has so much more going for it, including the chaotic Mascot Matchup. Here’s where you can let your guard down and simply relish in the ridiculousness of it all. You might jump into a quick Play Now game, compete in Play a Friend, or call plays in Coach Mode. Either way, EA Sports delivers depth, strategy, and a heck of a good time all around.

Verdict

My one complaint with College Football 27 was with the microtransactions added to the single-player Dynasty and Road to Glory modes. However, they have since been removed after warranted public outrage. It still doesn’t make sense for a paid game, one that already has the $99.99 Deluxe and the $149.99 MVP bundle, to then lock progression behind a paywall. But such is the norm these days, at least for the Ultimate Team mode that continues to distastefully thrive on pay-to-win.

For now, the Dynasty and Road to Glory modes remain microtransaction-free. It’s in their purest form that players enjoy the most in-depth and strategic managerial and on-field gameplay that College Football 27 offers thus far.
