Civilization VII: Everything We Know

Time truly flies. Over the past three decades, the Civilization series has held fans in a chokehold. Players have no problem sinking hundreds of hours into the game. With Civilization VII around the corner, here’s to another round of well-appreciated sleepless nights.

It may still be too early in the development cycle. Yet we have quite a bit of information about the story, gameplay, and more features to expect in the final game. Here’s everything we know so far about Civilization VII.

What is Civilization VII?

Civilization VII

Sid Meier's Civilization VII, or just Civilization VII, is an upcoming 4X strategy game. It stems from the award-winning strategy game franchise, Civilization. The series has so far spun six mainline games, alongside several spin-offs, including board games, and expansion packs.

Between 1991 and 2016, Civilization has remained consistent in delivering turn-based strategy games of a lifetime. Now, the developing team is gearing up to usher in a new chapter in the series.

Players have spent their Civilization playthroughs building empires. With Civilization VII, we may be looking at the most profound empire-building experience yet.

Story

Civilization 7

For now, we don’t know the exact storyline that Civilization VII plans to tell. However, Civilization VII’s Steam store page does reveal that you’ll be choosing to play as “one of many legendary leaders from throughout history.” The main goal of the series has always been to build a civilization from scratch. From what we can tell, Civilization VII won’t be any different.

You’ll start off building cities, including architectural wonders. Bit by bit, you’ll expand your territory. In some cases, you’ll employ diplomacy, working together with neighboring nations to prosper your civilization. But in other cases, you’ll use violence to conquer rival civilizations.

Exploration will be key, as it always has been in the series. Perhaps it’s charging expeditions to unknown worlds for research. Perhaps it’s uncovering technological innovations. In any case, your empire-building efforts won’t just be in-house, but outside your borders, too.

Gameplay

Civilization VII

Civilization VII will highly likely retain the same gameplay as its predecessors. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s always been a “building the greatest empire the world has ever seen” affair in the series. Civilization VII won’t be much different.

So, definitely expect the same grueling but rewarding experience the Civilization series is known for. The series has one of the deepest strategy gameplay systems. With Civilization VII, those systems are likely to grow even deeper and, hopefully, seamless.

The developing team promises to showcase some new, exciting features and innovations in August 2024. These will likely be improvements to provide smoother and more fluid gameplay.

Development

Developer Firaxis Games and publisher 2K are currently working on the upcoming Civilization VII. They’ve only just revealed the game to be in development at the Summer Games Fest 2024.

We only got a teaser trailer that doesn’t go deep into the story and gameplay. However, we can confirm that the full reveal will be made in August 2024. The upcoming reveal promises to showcase the exciting, new features and innovations you can expect in the final game.

At least we now know that Civilization VII is in development. Especially since it’s been countless years of wondering when the next iteration in the series will arrive. Now, what’s left is to keep a close eye on development, with, hopefully, a smooth process underway that sticks to the set timelines.

Firaxis Games has worked on wildly successful franchises like XCOM. So, Civilization VII is definitely in capable hands. Here’s what Sid Meier, Founder and Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games had to say:

“For more than 30 years, players from around the world have shared their love and support for Civ. I'm incredibly excited for Civ fans to see Civilization VII, a game that represents the culmination of three decades of strategy innovation and refinement.”

Meanwhile, David Ismailer, President of 2K Games, expresses his excitement over the upcoming game, stating that:

“With more than 70 million copies sold and over 1 billion hours played, the Civilization franchise is a crown jewel for 2K. What the team is looking to accomplish with Civilization VII is nothing short of breathtaking, and we're confident that Firaxis Games has another hit on their hands with Civilization VII.”

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII - Official Teaser Trailer

For now, all we have is a riveting Civilization VII teaser trailer out now on YouTube. The teaser doesn’t reveal much as far as the story and gameplay are concerned. It’s solely cinematic, building anticipation for the upcoming game.

Still, it’s easy on the eyes, with some pretty cool CGI transitions through history. All it reveals is everything we already expect from a Civilization title. The goal is to build the greatest empire after your own heart.

New titles are often expected to bring something new and exciting to the table. The teaser trailer certainly doesn’t go deep into just how different and more worthwhile Civilization VII will be. However, there’s the August 2024 full reveal coming up soon. So, hopefully, Firaxis Games tightens the screws on what the next iteration in the Civilization series plans to do differently.
