Chrono Odyssey: Everything We Know

Chrono Odyssey is in line to carry the torch for the MMO community, with perhaps one of the best-looking Unreal Engine 5 open worlds we've seen in months, and maybe even years. Thanks to Npixel, a studio based over in South Korea, the upcoming RPG will stand a chance of setting the next benchmark for the genre—a title that, if executed well enough, would alter the course of the MMO universe. And while that's quite a tall order on any account, we have every bit of faith in its vision; it's clean, ambitious, and refreshing beyond all measure.

So, with our faith in the upcoming project well and truly out in the open, what more do you really need to know about it? Well, the intricacies and the general premise, for starters. And on that note, here's everything we're currently able to tell you based on the facts supplied by Npixel. Chrono Odyssey: what is it, and why should you be keeping it on your radar as we pass over to 2024 and beyond?

What Is Chrono Odyssey?

To set the record straight, Chrono Odyssey is an open world MMORPG. Set in the world of Setera—a realm that can be manipulated through the power to control both time and space, you will take your place in “a land full of unexplored regions, with rewards and riches yet unknown.” As one of six class types, you will embark on an epic quest to forge your own legacy. And from the looks of it, it won't just be you questing across the vast and flawless biomes of Setera, either.

According to Npixel, a great deal of Setera will revolve around the Chronotector—a “powerful artifact said to have been created by a mysterious ancient civilization”. This artefact, or key, will let players “stop time, rewind events, and explore other timelines and overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.”

“At first glance, Setera may appear as a peaceful, beautiful land filled with nature,” the blurb adds. “However, Setera is also now the frontlines of the war against the Void, which has been ongoing since the beginning of time. This land is filled with the dangers and chaos caused by twisted time and space and contradicting timelines. These same dangers provide countless mysteries and opportunities not afforded to any other world. Uncover the secrets behind Setera's timeline and find a way to save everyone—including yourself.”

Story

Chrono Odyssey transports you to the luscious nature-absorbed open world of Setera. It is here, immersed in an ongoing war with the Void—”otherworldly invaders that reject the existence of life itself”—that you will take your place and learn to survive what lurks beneath the outer shell of a seemingly lavish realm.

There's something that holds Setera in tatters, however, which is the Chronotector, a powerful artefact forged by an ancient civilization known as “The Great Ones.” As a wielder of the artefact, you will have the freedom to bend and manipulate time and space to your will. As for how you will use it and the consequences you will face for doing so remains unclear. Either way, the actions you make during your journey will influence the people and the general balance of Setera. So no pressure there, then.

Gameplay

Like a great deal of MMOs that foster a fantasy setting with several races, there will be a number of classes to choose from before entering Setera. As one of six types, you will have the freedom to shape and tweak your character to strike all the appropriate boxes. After that, it's essentially your world for the taking, with countless story arcs to pursue and pathways to venture down. And as this is indeed an MMORPG, you can definitely expect to see hundreds of hours of content stowed away in the network of pipelines that Setera houses.

We can't say for certain how wide the world of Setera will be, though according to the elevator pitch, Setera will be home to five unique species: The Guardians, The Void, The Broken, The Outcasts, and The World Movers. So, expect plenty of conflict between factions, and even more branching narratives to discover and unearth as you forge your legacy from the ground up.

Development

Funnily enough, Chrono Odyssey was originally billed as an Android and iOS game. Due to its graphics being on par with the highest type of pedigree, however, developer Npixel eventually went on to broaden its scope. Long story short, the MMORPG found its way over to PC and next-gen consoles, and is now, after two years, piloting Unreal Engine 5 in a bid to bring the game to platforms at some stage in 2024.

To put it short, yes, there is a trailer of Chrono Odyssey. And not just the one standard pre-launch preview, but a surprising amount of in-depth trailers all pertaining to the setting and its generous amount of lore. You can catch a glimpse of what's to come in the initial announcement trailer above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Unfortunately, Npixel has yet to hammer down a definite release date for Chrono Odyssey. That said, it has been mentioned in passing that it'll arrive on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam at some point in mid-2024. But try not take our word for it, though.

If you're wanting to secure a pre-order for any special editions, then you're slightly early. As it turns out, Npixel has yet to bring forth any form of pre-launch collector's editions or bonuses. If this happens to change over the next twelve months or so, then news is sure to spread via its preferred social networks and markets.
