Games like Trek to Yomi

If you enjoyed Trek to Yomi, then it was most likely due to the fact that you fell in love with the game's immersive narrative. The game was a cinematic experience, presented in a dystopic noir theme that captivated us all. It came to life through its well-sought story and made for an original experience. Though you may not be able to relive the game, you can relive the experience by playing the five games you should play if you enjoyed Trek to Yomi.

In this list, we are looking for games to match the eerie and dark presence Trek to Yomi gives off. Also, games that fit into the Samurai genre and have a distinct combat system to show it. These are two mediums that are hard to match but are done so by our number one pick. Surely if you enjoyed Trek to Yomi, you will enjoy the five games like it, on this list.

5. Little Nightmares II (Series)

Little Nightmares II - Launch Trailer

The original Little Nightmares game was released in 2017 and showed how well a suspenseful thriller and horror sidescroller could play. The first game was a great initial impression, but what the devs found is that gamers wanted more of the “nightmarish” theme. Well, that's exactly what they delivered with their second installment, Little Nightmares II, which is our preferred pick of the two for you. However, the first one is still a great title and worth the time playing if you feel it's down your avenue.

Much like Trek to Yomi, Little Nightmares II doe's a great job of using light as a means of suspense and attention. Your eyes will automatically be attracted to what stands out and is highlighted on the screen. This really makes the game an immersive experience, giving off a similar feeling you had with Trek to Yomi. Similarly, there is a storyline here that encourages you to delve deeper into the game. Which, once your fully immersed you will find a hard way to step away from it.

4. Aragami 2 (Series)

Aragami 2 - Gameplay Trailer | PS5, PS4

Aragmi 2 is a third-person stealth game, that fee's like Trek to Yomi's 3D counterpart. As you did in Trek to Yomi, here you will be utilizing and working in the shadows. However, this is only because you are an Aragami warrior who's faced with a humanity-robbing curse that lets you control the shadows. So, in turn, you control the shadows as you play, along with a list of other abilities that allow for creative and new approaches to the game's stealth gameplay.

While stealth is the primary focus, the game's challenging levels will force you to break out into a fury of combat from time to time. This is also where you will find similarities to Trek to Yomi as the combat isn't just a simple point and click, hack and slash style. There is a challenging learning curve behind it that makes the fighting mindfully complex rather than just mindless. Needless to say, both games are also similar for the reason of being based in Japan, looking to take down a threat of evil, much larger and more powerful than themselves.

3. Inside

Inside Official Launch Trailer

Right back into the theme of dark and mysterious side-scrollers, we present you Inside. Much of Little Nightmare's inspiration stemmed from the success of Inside, as the game came out in 2016, a year prior to the original Little Nightmares game. However, the game saw far more success from players and reviewers not just for its original concept, but also for how well it blended an immersive tale into it.

There is a deep meaning behind Inside's story, that gamers are still trying to link the source of its inspiration. Essentially, the game set's you in a psychological world where one group reigns over another, controlling them mentally and physically. It's a story players are still looking for answers to, and seemingly there is an alternate story ending players have found, that gives insight into just what the games trying to portray. What is it? You'll have to play and find out for yourself.

2. Sifu

Sifu - Official Reveal Trailer | PS5, PS4

At the base appearance, it's hard to compare Trek to Yomi with Sifu. Both games are equally unique as they are enjoyable, however, they do share a common element. That is in their narrative, which is one of revenge. In Trek to Yomi, you are pushed by your drive to avenge the destruction of your hometown. Well, much along the lines of Sifu, you are looking to avenge the death of your dead father, a Kung-Fu master.

As you mature and take on his Kung-Fu skill, you seek vengeance on those who murdered your father, giving the plot a more complicated interpretation than when it first began. This is where the combat comes in, which has a challenging learning curve and interesting take on dying. That is, you age a certain number of years with every death. The game isn't entirely of a dark presence like Trek to Yomi but it holds quite a few moments that share a similar feel. The big drive in similarity here is the story, which you'll want to see through to the end.

1. Armed With Wings (Series)

Armed With Wings: Rearmed Launch Trailer

To check off all the boxes, we present you Armed With Wings: Rearmed. A black and white 2D side-scroller, with an engaging combat system. Almost sounds exactly like Trek to Yomi, except in a much faster rhythm. The game is rather short but high in quantity with six games to its name. The game actually started out as a web browser flash game and saw its first all-inclusive edition come with Armed With Wings: Rearmed. That means you can play the first five games right now for free on any supporting flash game site.

There is a lot of speculation that Armed with Wings gave inspiration for Devolver Digital to take the concept and push it with an emphasis on narrative. If this is the case, we are happy they did so. As Armed with Wings' narrative throughout the series is still strong, but their focus is on the gameplay, which is constantly engaging and addicting. Regardless, amongst the games you should play if you enjoyed Trek to Yomi, our number one recommendation is the Armed With Wings series.
