5 Best The Walking Dead Games of All Time, Ranked

The Walking Dead is one of the most well-known franchises in the zombie genre. What began as a novel comic book series has now spread across all areas of pop culture, including an 11-season TV show and over ten video game adaptations. TellTale Games, The Walking Dead Series, is the best and most notable among the video game renditions. They aren't, however, the only games with titles based on the story. And as a result, we'd like to rank the best The Walking Dead games of all time.

After all, it's been a long stint for the franchise and it's about time it's due for a review. But, as much as we'd like to see some competition for the telltale series, we feel there are only a couple of alternative games based on The Walking Dead that can compete with it. Aside from that, Telltale Games The Walking Dead Series has a pretty clear monopoly over the premise. Regardless, let's see where Telltale Games and their competitors rank among the best The Walking Dead games of all time.

5. The Walking Dead: No Man's Land

We'll be the first to say we're not a big fan of games that find a feasible Android and iOS crossover. As is typical, they are rather simple-minded and are primarily interested in making a quick buck by exploiting a popular franchise title. The Walking Dead: No Man's Land, on the other hand, did this without hitting all of our quirks, and it ended up keeping us invested for much longer than we expected. This, combined with the fact that it is free, made this mobile title worthwhile to play.

Nonetheless, the game is still primarily a survival base-building game. With the usual aspects of barricading it, going on quests to gather resources and more survivors to your camp. What kept us coming back was encountering characters from The Walking Dead TV show and even seeing locations from the show in the game. If you're new to The Walking Dead franchise, you won't get too much of a kick out of the game. But if you've experienced it, you can probably agree it's not the best, but an acknowledgeable addition, to say the least.

4. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

VR is an industry that feels like it's constantly coming to fruition as there are constantly games released for the platform that indicate VR has more to offer. A great example of this is The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners. Many players, including us, were hesitant about how the final product would present itself. But even with our skepticism, we can agree that Skybox Interactive developed one of the best The Walking Dead video games as a VR title.

Based in New Orleans, you are fresh off the outbreak and must fend for yourself against zombies, scavenge for resources, and deal with the difficulties that come with encountering survivors and factions. It truly is the best part of The Walking Dead series crammed into a VR title that is both frightening and constantly adrenaline-pumping. But what makes it even more immersive are the heartbreaking decisions you are constantly forced to make that affect the world. This really put us in the shoes of a survivor and it resulted in one of the best games based on The Walking Dead.

3. The Walking Dead: Season 2

Best The Walking Dead Games

Yes, now we move into our top three picks, which are dominated by Telltale's The Walking Dead series. And taking the third podium spot is The Walking Dead Season 2. The successful sequel to an excellent first season demonstrated that Telltale Games truly had a vision behind the story of these games. Picking up right where we left off, we follow Clementine, who is now much older and wiser after the devastating ending of the first episode.

Without the assistance of our faithful companion in this season, we see a much more brutal world, even for an older and more experienced Clementine. This almost made the story of the game difficult to swallow, as we were begging for Clementine to be free of the horrors she feels she can never escape. While the story left some people with a salty taste in their mouths, you can't deny that it succeeded in drawing us in and immersing us in it. Furthermore, the second game is a far superior follow-up to later entries in the series.

2. The Walking Dead: The Final Season

Best The Walking Dead Games

While the middle of the pack for Telltale Games The Walking Dead series was a lackluster experience, we can happily say Clementiens journey was wrapped with a nice pretty bow to conclude her story. We watch Clementine grow from a scared child to fulfilling the shoes of her original role model and now becoming a leader herself. Which is the story's full circle premise, which ties everything together.

This is evident in Clementine's attempt to establish a secluded school as her last hope for a home. This is where she tries to raise Alvin Jr, a young orphan, better known in-game as AJ. This makes the final episode a heartfelt adventure while still retaining the usual grim and horrific aspects. Overall, it was a satisfying conclusion to a fantastic series. However, it still wasn't enough to top the best The Walking Dead game of all time.

1. The Walking Dead: Season 1

Best The Walking Dead Games

As we and many others see it, no The Walking Dead game can top Telltale Games' original title to the series. The game won a slew of awards in 2012, including Game of the Year, and it was clearly well-deserved. The high-stakes drama of Lee taking young Clementine under his wing was incredibly impactful because it put you in control of each decision. Which, at times, we wish it didn't because these decisions were often too difficult to bare. And often, we didn't want to confront the repercussions of our actions.

That premise is essentially what distinguished The Walking Dead: Season 1 from its competitors. But to tie it all together, we had a very detailed and immersive plot, likable characters, and plenty of tense moments that appeared out of nowhere. The game is full of surprises, and it's a joy to play from beginning to end. With all that said, there's no doubt in our minds that The Walking Dead: Season 1 is the best The Walking Dead game of all time.
