CD Projekt Red has settled the one question hanging over The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2: physical Switch owners get the free upgrade too. The studio issued the clarification a day after the remaster’s reveal at gamescom Opening Night Live, and it removes a real snag for a game that sold heavily on cartridge.
The statement lays out two paths. The distinction matters because the eShop can verify a digital purchase automatically, while a cartridge carries no such proof, leaving physical owners briefly unable to place the free pre-order that opened alongside the announcement.
How the Switch 2 Upgrade Works
The mechanism CD Projekt Red described splits cleanly by how the original was bought. Digital owners are already in the eShop’s records, so the free pre-order appears for them now and the Switch 2 version is theirs at launch. Physical owners simply wait: rather than converting their purchase into a pre-order, the upgrade becomes a claim at launch, tied to owning the cartridge version. Either way the cost is the same, nothing, and the date is the same, September 29, 2026.
The remaster itself is not a Switch 2 exclusive. According to CD Projekt Red’s announcement, it launches the same day on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S as a free upgrade for existing owners on what the studio calls “qualifying platforms,” with the Switch 2 release marking the first native version of the game on a Nintendo console. The studio is co-developing Remastered with Yigsoft, a Hungarian co-development company that has already worked on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition.
The upgrade list is long: upgraded visuals, enhanced combat, improved traversal and movement, new witcher sign effects, revamped mount handling, enhanced monster behaviors, a skill tree revamp, transmogrification, an expanded photo mode, and new finishers. That is a deeper overhaul than a resolution bump, and it is the same package across platforms.
The Announcement Around the Upgrade
The remaster headline arrived on August 25, 2026 at Geoff Keighley’s gamescom Opening Night Live, and CD Projekt Red used the stage to bundle in two more pieces of news. All current owners of The Witcher 3 gained access to its original two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, at no additional cost, a giveaway Keighley announced on stage. And through a new partnership with Blizzard Entertainment, both Remastered and the next expansion, Songs of the Past, will come to Battle.net, with a Geralt-inspired skin in Diablo 4 for those who buy the expansion on Blizzard’s platform.
The Switch 2 clarification slots into a launch CD Projekt Red has been building toward for months.
