Sony Brings Back “Only on PS5” Marketing for Its Biggest Games
Sony is telling players outright where its biggest games live again. A new official PlayStation advert titled “Only On PS5”, published August 24, 2026 on the company’s YouTube channel and served across social media, stitches together footage from Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, Saros, God of War Laufey, Astro Bot and Gran Turismo 7, with the phrase “PlayStation 5 exclusive” running through the clips.
It is the first time in this console generation that Sony has marketed a slate of first-party games this way. None of the six titles in the video has been released on PC, and none has a PC version announced. Gran Turismo 7 is the partial exception in the group: it also shipped on PlayStation 4 in 2022, and it was originally announced as a PS5 exclusive.
The messaging lands as a promise about the future, not just a description of the present. Wolverine launches September 15, 2026, and God of War Laufey follows on February 16, 2027, per the video’s listing. Labeling those games “PlayStation 5 exclusive” in paid marketing is as close as Sony has come to stating on the record that its PC port program for single-player tentpoles is finished.
A Policy Shift Sony Has Been Signaling for Months
The advert caps a shift that has played out across 2026 in reporting and in Sony’s own paperwork. Bloomberg first reported on March 4, 2026 that Sony was pulling back from releasing PlayStation games on PC, with future single-player releases set to stay on PS5. According to Bloomberg’s March report, single-player titles such as Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5.
Then came the paper trail. In the annual report Sony filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 18, 2026, the company removed a line that had appeared in the prior year’s edition: that it planned to continue deploying first-party titles to multiple platforms such as PC. The deletion was the closest thing to official confirmation until this advert made the strategy consumer-facing.
The new spot also folds into PlayStation’s broader “It happens on PS5” brand campaign, but with a harder edge: where that tagline sells moments, “Only on PS5” sells walls.
What the Six Games Tell You
The selection is deliberate. Marvel’s Wolverine, Saros and God of War Laufey are unreleased tentpoles, the games a platform holder most needs to sell hardware. Ghost of Yotei, which launched October 2, 2025, is the kind of prestige single-player sequel Sony has continued to support with a story expansion, a roguelike mode and a complete edition. Astro Bot and Gran Turismo 7 round out the reel as proof of a library already sitting exclusively on the console.
Sony’s own numbers explain why the company can afford to lean into the console as the center of the business. In its fiscal 2025 results, reported May 8, 2026, the Game & Network Services segment posted record operating income of 463.3 billion yen, up 12% year on year, on sales of 4.69 trillion yen. Monthly active users on PlayStation reached a record 125 million accounts in March 2026. For fiscal 2026, Sony is forecasting higher first-party software sales even as hardware unit sales decline, and it says it is increasing investment in the next-generation platform.
That is a company whose engaged console audience is at an all-time high and whose profits increasingly come from software and services sold to that audience, not from reaching players elsewhere. The calculus had already shifted before the marketing caught up.
The End of the Port Era
Sony’s PC experiment began in earnest in 2020, when Horizon Zero Dawn arrived on Steam, and grew into a steady cadence of delayed ports: God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part I, Ghost of Tsushima and others followed their PlayStation launches to PC by months or years. The releases expanded the audience, but the delayed schedule meant ports often arrived after the cultural moment had passed, and several sold modestly relative to their console debuts.
According to Bloomberg’s March report, a faction inside PlayStation had also raised concerns that releasing games on PC risked damaging the console’s brand and hurting sales of the PS5 and its successors. The new advert is that argument rendered as marketing: the exclusives are the console, and Sony is once again saying so in those words.
For PC players, the practical effect lands over the next 18 months. Marvel’s Wolverine arrives September 15, 2026 and God of War Laufey on February 16, 2027 as PS5 exclusives, with no PC versions on Sony’s slate and no port pipeline left to assume otherwise.
