Rockstar Games Breaks Silence on GTA 6 Leaks Before Extended Look
Rockstar Games has publicly addressed the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks for the first time, calling the week-long flood of unofficial gameplay videos “heartbreaking” for its development team, in a statement posted to the studio’s official X account on August 26, 2026.
“It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time,” the statement reads, per the full text carried by VGC.
The studio apologized for how long everything has taken, “from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay,” and pointed players to the reveal it has been building toward: “We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow.” That showcase, “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” premieres August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET on Netflix, per the pinned announcement Rockstar posted on August 6, 2026.
The statement closes by reconfirming the release date the leakers have been trying to spoil, with the studio saying it hopes players “will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.” Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19, 2026.
How the Leak Campaign Reached This Point
The statement caps two weeks of escalating leakage. Clips attributed to a group using the alias “Cyberleek” began circulating in mid-August 2026 and kept arriving daily, spreading across X, Discord servers and reupload networks faster than takedown notices could clear them.
Parent company Take-Two Interactive answered on the legal track. On August 20 and August 21, 2026 it filed requests for subpoenas under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, directed at Microsoft, X Corp. and Discord. The Microsoft demand seeks account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses and device identifiers for users tied to named Discord servers, plus OneDrive content referencing GTA, Rockstar or Cyberleek. Judge Jennifer L. Rochon signed an order on August 21, 2026 directing the clerk to issue the Microsoft subpoena.
The filings carry Take-Two’s declared purpose: “to obtain the identity of an alleged infringer or infringers,” with the information to be used “only for the purpose of protecting Take-Two’s rights.”
What the Subpoenas Demand, and What Comes Next
A DMCA subpoena is not a lawsuit. It is a request under a provision of federal copyright law that lets a rights holder ask a court clerk to unmask an alleged infringer without filing a complaint or arguing the infringement claim before a judge. The recipient can serve written objections before the compliance date, and Discord has signaled it intends to review the demand. Ryan Rigney, Discord’s marketing director, wrote on August 24, 2026 that the platform had not yet been served and would “evaluate the validity and scope” when it is.
Two dates now bracket the campaign. Microsoft faces a September 4, 2026 production deadline under the subpoena’s terms. Before that, the Extended Look premieres August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET, the first official long-form footage of the game since the leaks began.
The enforcement push runs alongside the most closely watched launch in Take-Two’s history. The company held its fiscal-year outlook steady on August 7, 2026 on the strength of NBA 2K and GTA bookings, with GTA 6 as the centerpiece, and pre-order data has buyers choosing the $100 Ultimate Edition over the standard edition by a nine-to-one margin.
Rockstar’s Own Words on the Damage
The studio acknowledged the leaks may have already changed how players meet the game. “While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19,” the statement reads.
It also thanked players directly: “We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week. Your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine.” The note is signed simply “Rockstar Games,” with no individual executive named, and it commits only to “sharing more with you soon,” starting with the August 27 premiere.
