Grizzy and the Lemmings: Crazy Party Review (Xbox Series X|S & PC)

There are couch co-op games that I would happily recommend to the younger generation, and there are games that I wouldn’t dare entertain the thought of sliding into the pile at a semi-annual family gathering. Grizzy and the Lemmings: Crazy Party, thankfully, is one that falls into the former category, as is it a game that, true to the spirit of the source material, builds on the essence of a genuinely engrossing family-oriented narrative that provides more than cheap thrills and temporary giggles.

Luckily, you don’t need to be familiar with the world of Grizzy and its slapstick humor to add your name to the hat in Crazy Party. In fact, you don’t need to be an experienced gamer to play it or enjoy its whopping fifty mini-game collection. If anything, you just need a couch, a bundle of controllers, and an open mind that allows you to see beyond the similarities. Crazy Party doesn’t reinvent the wheel as far as multiplayer party games go, but it does add a fresh lick of vibrancy to an otherwise bloated format that’s had more than its fair share of honey.

At the heart of Crazy Party is a bashful multiplayer party game that, as the title suggests, bows its noggin to the world of Grizzy and the Lemmings—a beloved television series that commits to the classic Tom & Jerry feel, with an overprivileged bear, a cast of small but indescribably mischievous critters, and a cabin that boasts hundreds of opportunities for each of the uncivil species to outdo and agitate one another. In this world, you take control of a Lemming, with which you can customize, experiment with, and use to collect hundreds of bonus stickers over five distinct boards, all of which pay tribute to the original animated series.

The idea behind Crazy Party isn’t all that different from your standard homely Game of Life: you pass through various squares on the board, complete mini-games, and collect jars of Yummy. The winner, in short, is whoever collect the most Yummy by the end of the game board. To collect this seemingly valuable treasure, each player must participate in a series of chaotic, albeit fully explained mini-games, some of which involve racing, others that involve memorizing patterns, dodging obstacles, and subjecting yourself to a bit of last-minute tomfoolery to knuckle in on a quick and questionably immoral victory. Simply put, it’s a matter of earning your credits, even if it means having to sabotage, lie, and occasionally pull the wool over your friend’s eyes for a few extra jars.

As I said, everything that you see here is supported by a simple and reliable narrative. The games, which are designed to be played by participants from all walks of life, each have their own preliminary instructions and useful tips, thus making each slip into the cabin and the other four game boards an easy one. The controls, too, really aren’t all that difficult to navigate, given that Crazy Party’s primary objective is to appeal to a younger player base with an interface that is both easy to grasp and mechanically intuitive. Case in point, the game, at least for the most part, either involves hitting prompts, running rampantly, or mashing buttons at lightning speeds. It’s so accommodating, in fact, that even the most incompetent player can start racking up points without any prior experience in the field.

To give credit where credit is due, Crazy Party does an excellent job of making each session energetic and universally wholesome. With a well-rounded casket of activities to experience, hundreds of collectibles to locate, six modes to experiment with, and five familiar game boards to explore, it definitely unleashes a lot more than your cheap one-and-done couch-based battler. What’s more, as it ensures that you always have a new set of rules to learn or a new milestone to celebrate, it also provides a great deal of replay value. And that’s a huge boon in the multiplayer space, as it allows frequent players to pledge to the same board and still find something new to take a stab at. This game board just happens to be drizzled in Yummy. Again, you don’t need to know what that is to enjoy the experience.

Although Crazy Party might not be as challenging as your typical Machine Party-like clone, it does strike the right balance between being a fun experience and a comfortable one that gracefully teaches the younger audience the fundamentals of an entry-level party game. With condensed mechanics, easy-on-the-eye world elements, and simple but effective incentives to keep you hooked, it delivers a solid alternative that is not only worth your time and effort, but your money, too. And let’s be honest, that isn’t something that you often see in a video game adaptation of a children’s television series.

While Mario Party is an obvious choice for fledgling party goers and couch co-op fanatics, Grizzy and the Lemmings: Crazy Party is still a superbly balanced and well-orchestrated follow-up that not only makes for an entertaining game, but also serves as a brilliant counterpart for the animated series, too. With a visual style that perfectly frames the source material and a sound design that captures the mischievous tone of the series, Crazy Party delivers a thoroughly bashful, true-to-the-source experience that is, in all fairness, just as enticing as any ten-second party igniter on the market.

Verdict

Grizzy and the Lemmings: Crazy Party offers a lot more than a faithful adaptation of an animated series. In addition to its signature aesthetic and score, it also provides a boatload of opportunities for you to wax your inner party-loving soul, with dozens of intuitive mini-games, boards and collectibles to keep you, your friends, and even the most starry-eyed, less versatile players engaged for hours. Even without a challenge to keep you occupied, it still finds a perfect balancing position to enforce its greatest strengths, of which there are plenty to choose from. For that reason alone, I’d say that Crazy Party is, minus a couple of warts, an absolute delight to play around with.
