5 Most Intriguing Open World Games Coming to Xbox Series X & PlayStation 5

The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are pushing the boundaries of big AAA games to offer more quantity and quality in their games than ever before. And for open-world games, this means providing a larger in-game world with more possibilities and mysteries to explore. Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example of pushing and reaching new potentials, as they truly set the sky as the limit for their game. And, while there were some bugs, you can't deny the game pushed the limits of what open-world games can offer.

That holds true for the open-world games on this list as well. As 2022 comes to an end and 2023 approaches, these open-world games intend to raise the bar for the genre once more. Utilizing the full potential of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation consoles. The only catch is that these open-world games cannot be restricted to a single console. They must be available on both platforms. This has mainly excluded the inclusion of a few notable titles such as Starfield and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Aside from that, these are the best open-world games coming down the pipe for both next-gen consoles.

5. Assassin's Creed Mirage

Assassin's Creed Mirage: Cinematic World Premiere | #UbiForward

One thing is certain: the Assassin's Creed games have perfected the movement of traversing like an Assassin. Giving players the freedom to do so in an open-world game with an obstacle course-style cityscape is one of the franchise's main draws. While we were missing that cityscape in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, we have it back in the newest title, Assassin's Creed Mirage. Which is working off the rustic city structure of Baghdad.

This appears to be returning Assassin's Creed to its roots, allowing players to use their terrain, high or low, to execute assassinations effectively. Rather than a button-mashing, fist-fighting fest, this will put players' stealth and strategy skills back to the test. This means that displaying your Assassin prowess is once again at the forefront and main focus of the franchise's newest entry. Which is what we've loved about the franchise from the start, and will surely adore in their latest entry, Assassin's Creed Mirage.

4. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – First Look Trailer

Great open-world games deliver a captivating landscape that completely immerses us in its beauty. This motivates players to explore the open world to its full extent, and really capitalizes on the entire concept. Take, Horizon Forbidden West for example. That game is a walking spectacle that invites you to explore every underground burrow and tree canopy from east to west. And you can't help yourself but do just that. These are also our expectations for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Regardless if you like James Cameron's sci-fi flick, you can't deny the world of Pandora made for an interesting setting. One that surely would be intriguing to explore as an open-world action-adventure game. All of which we'll get to experience, as our very own member of the Na'Vi, come sometime in 2023. Exploring Pandora's visually stimulating aesthetic, which is full of mysteries far and wide, will undoubtedly be the highlight. And if Massive Entertainment is able to fully realize it, then surely we'll have one of the most captivating open-world games of all time on our hands.

3. Diablo IV

Diablo IV Official Gameplay Trailer

Diablo Immortal was undeniably disappointing. It felt like Blizzard delivered a half-baked entry that didn't capture the franchise's premise as well as its previous entries. But we have higher expectations for Diablo IV, the fourth installment in the series that aims to continue the dungeon crawler with an epic story and a new take on gameplay. That is, Diablo IV will be the series' first open-world game, departing from its usual linear progression.

The game will begin with a narrow path that will eventually branch off into multiple paths that players can freely explore under the open-world premise. After the initial introduction, for example, players can embark on three distinct regions: Scosglen, The Fractured Peaks, and the Dry Steppes. Which direction you choose inevitably doesn't matter as they all find their way to the same final act. However, it will be interesting to see the franchise's first use of the open-world concept.

Release Date: 2023

2. Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn - Official Announcement Trailer

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an open-world game whose reveal surprised us at the Xbox and Bethesda showcase. This is A44's newest open-world RPG title, which promises to be a wild fantasy adventure. The door to the afterlife has been opened, and the god's army of the undead has been unleashed to wipe out the rest of the planet's life. But they won't be so easily accomplished with you, challenger of gods, standing in their way.

With a strong act of vengeance, and lots of steel, gunpowder, and magic, you are leading mankind's final siege against the army of demonic beings. And your goal is to rid the game's open world of everything that oppresses humanity. However, from the game's trailer, it appears we'll also be accompanied by a magical furry friend. Overall, the entire premise is intriguing and has caught our attention. That's why we strongly feel Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is gearing up for one of the more interesting open-world, action RPG games to hit our screens in early 2023.

Release Date: Early 2023

1. The Day Before

The Day Before - Official Release Date Trailer

If you enjoy open-world MMO survival games, The Day Before looks to be one of the best yet. This game's open-world exploration is truly limitless, from towering skyscrapers to the endless wilderness. There's even a massive fully explorable five-story mall. And that's just one building to explore, let alone the entire map. That's why we have high hopes that The Day Before will be the pinnacle of survival exploration.

But don't forget about the main aspect of survival, which will have you fighting hordes of pandemic-infected zombies and other survivors looking to take advantage of you and your loot. So make sure you have your guard up when you're out and about. Or, you can join a colony of survivors if you prefer not to work alone. Regardless, The Day Before appears to have a lot in store for the survival genre and is looking to take full advantage of it for next-gen consoles come March 2023.

Release Date: March 1, 2023
