5 Best Games on PlayStation Now (May 2022)

Published

 on

PlayStation Now has its fair share of streamable video games, many of which pass as some of the most essential titles on the global market. This is only expected to grow as Sony combines the subscription platform with the online-only PlayStation Now service. Come launch day, the library will host a significant amount of games, both new and old, all of which will come under a single price tag.

Anyway, that's looking ahead ever so slightly. As for the here and now, there are plenty of options for subscribers to sink their teeth into. So, whether you're new to the platform or simply contemplating a contract renewal, allow for these five games to sway you in the right direction. Here's what's essential on PlayStation Now this May.

5. Shadow Warrior 3

Shadow Warrior 3 - Launch Trailer | PS5, PS4

Before Flying Wild Hog's universally acclaimed first-person shooter Shadow Warrior 3 rolled out on the PlayStation Now front, new games on the platform were highly unheard of. It was a rarity that only the likes of Xbox Game Pass could swing, which is precisely why subscribers were shocked when Sony decided to give the rival a run for its money by having a day-one exclusive to fly its colors.

Unlike its looter-shooter predecessor, Shadow Warrior 3 rounds back to its roots by incorporating a nexus of corridor shooter segments. Although not a long game by any means, it does compose a neat selection of high-octane bullet brawls with enough action to keep you satisfied, if only for short period of time between other games of its kind. So, if you're after an afternoon of slasher mayhem, then be sure to give this one a try.

4. Ghostrunner

Ghostrunner - Launch Trailer | PS4

Ghostrunner is what can only be described as the offspring of Dishonored, and Thief. Like its kin, the action-adventure title asks that players use stealth and strategy to outsmart the opponent, using whatever tools that are available to approach and overcome the threat. Alternatively, players can just go in all guns blazing, though the one-hit kill system can make for a bit of a burden.

Ghostrunner brings a tidy selection of challenges in a relatively short but gripping narrative. Its incredibly addictive combat boasts a wide variety of tools, weapons, and strategies, and its thought-provoking puzzles bode rather well with the steampunk-themed metropolis. So, should you be searching for a challenge that only strategy can overcome, then be sure to pick up Slipgate Ironworks' fast-paced action flick.

3. Journey to the Savage Planet

Journey to the Savage Planet - Launch Trailer | PS4

Similar to Outer Wilds and other intergalactic first-person shooters, Journey to the Savage Planet boasts a vibrant world chock-full of originality. Like games of its kind, the space-based adventure drops you on an alien planet, a place which houses an unidentifiable species that is both neutral and hostile, depending on the region.

Journey to the Savage Planet has you exploring the inner layers of ARY-26, a planet rich with color and intrigue. As an archivist, you must catalog the various species and flora that flesh out its luscious landscapes. Along the way, you'll have to upgrade equipment, ascend death-defying feats, and compile one of the most unusual libraries in the space nexus. So, a smooth combination of exploration and discovery, with a dash of well-oiled combat.

2. Cities Skylines

Cities: Skylines - Playstation®4 Edition - Announcement Trailer | PS4

PlayStation Now probably wouldn't garner such a huge audience if it wasn't for Cities Skylines, a timeless city-building sim that has more content than you could shake a stick at. But because of the sheer amount of material it has, it does explain the number of concurrent players that flock to it with each passing day.

Cities Skylines dares not reinvent what's already golden. It hones its skills on a platform that has proven itself a worthy adversary countless times over. And boy, it does it well. Thanks to the abundance of features the grand city-building chapter holds dear, PlayStation Now is able to rest assured knowing it garners the majority of players' positive critiques. Or, at least we think it does.

1. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

FINAL FANTASY X|X-2 HD Remaster E3 Trailer | E3 2013

You know, nothing hits you in the chest quite as hard as a Square Enix game. After all, Final Fantasy has been doing it for years, though nothing has managed to surpass the emotional rollercoaster of a journey that was Tidus and Yuna's in Final Fantasy X. Despite being well over a decade old, its tale still holds a place in our hearts to this day, and the fact its HD remaster is available on PlayStation Now is merely the icing on the cake.

The tale of Zanarkand is one that we'll never forget, no matter how many other stories we experience outside of it. It's timeless, and it most definitely stands as one of Square Enix's near-perfect works of art. Say what you will about the gameplay itself, but there's no denying the fact that its storytelling is impeccable. And as for the X-2 Remake, well, we can't turn our noses up to that, either. When combined, it's a masterpiece in motion; a staple any developer would be proud to hold dear.
