Epic Games Sells ArtStation and Sketchfab as KitBash Takes Over Artist Platforms
Epic Games announced on August 10, 2026 that ArtStation and Sketchfab, the two artist-community platforms it bought in 2021, are becoming part of KitBash, the company behind the KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla asset and tools businesses. The transfer hands over two of the industry’s largest portfolio and 3D-model communities, while Epic keeps Fab, the unified content marketplace it launched in October 2024 and integrated into Unreal Engine.
The divestment is the first sale out of the portfolio of creator platforms Epic assembled during its 2021 acquisition run, and Epic framed it as a matter of focus: the company said it is continuing to prioritize building Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite, the developer ecosystem, and the Epic Games Store. Epic retains Fab, the marketplace that absorbed the Sketchfab Store, while ArtStation’s own digital and prints marketplaces continue on the platform.
What Changes Hands, and What Epic Keeps
ArtStation is a portfolio, jobs, and marketplace platform for game, film, and entertainment artists; Sketchfab is a web-based platform for publishing, sharing, and licensing 3D models, with enterprise agreements Epic says will continue to be honored under KitBash. Both platforms’ user-facing FAQ posts stressed continuity: portfolios, model libraries, embeds, logins, pricing, and existing subscriptions carry over unchanged, and creators keep ownership of their work.
For Epic, the sale separates two businesses it had acquired as one package in 2021: the community and portfolio side, which now goes to KitBash, and the transactional storefront side, which it had already consolidated into Fab. Bill Clifford, Epic’s SVP of the Unreal Ecosystem, said in the announcement that “ArtStation and Sketchfab are go-to platforms for artists to share and manage their art,” and that KitBash “will expand opportunities for artists at every stage of their creation process to connect and showcase their work in new ways.”
KitBash co-CEO Banks Boutté said the company’s first priority is to protect what users value about each platform. “These are platforms where people have built portfolios, careers, and communities,” he said in the ArtStation Magazine post. “That trust is real, and our first priority is to protect what users value most about each platform, listen to the people who rely on them, and build thoughtfully for the future.”
A Five-Year Run From Buyer to Seller
Epic bought both platforms within a four-month span in 2021. The ArtStation acquisition was announced April 30, 2021, with Epic promising the site would keep operating as an independently branded platform. The Sketchfab deal followed on July 21, 2021, with Epic cutting the store’s seller fee to 12 percent, matching the Epic Games Store revenue share, at a time when Sketchfab hosted 4 million 3D assets.
The Sketchfab Store was absorbed into Fab, which launched October 22, 2024 as the successor to the Unreal Engine Marketplace and the Sketchfab Store and the new home of Quixel Megascans, while ArtStation kept its own digital and prints marketplaces. KitBash itself is a recent combination: KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla announced their merger on September 9, 2025, forming a company selling 3D asset libraries, materials, design and animation tools, and training under co-CEOs.
What the Companies Say Carries Over
Both sides committed to business as usual for existing users. The Sketchfab blog says creators and enterprise customers will see no changes to how they access or use the platform, and that enterprise agreements continue to be honored. The ArtStation FAQ says uploads, blogs, the digital and prints marketplaces, and jobs features run exactly as before, with Pro subscriptions unchanged.
KitBash’s own post adds that nothing changes for KitBash3D and Cargo customers — kits, assets, and subscriptions operate as they do today — and that the company is not announcing product integrations or roadmap changes at launch, saying it will “listen first” and share updates as long-term plans develop. Epic, for its part, said it and KitBash have had a longstanding partnership and expect to keep working together.
