Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden — Everything We Know

It's been a fair while since developer Don't Nod has released anything. Twin Mirror, actually, was the last project the studio worked on, which wound up being a vessel for the mystery-loving community before eventually phasing out of the spotlight in early 2021. In the two years that followed, the Paris-based firm pretty much kept its lips sealed. That is, until The Game Awards 2022 cropped up, at which point its new project was announced: Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.

At the time of writing, neither Don't Nod nor its publisher Focus Entertainment have revealed a whole lot about the upcoming narrative-driven RPG. A little research, however, has given us enough to compile a list of all the juiciest clippings. So, if you're interested in Don't Nod's latest next-gen venture, be sure to read on. Here's everything you need to know about Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.

What Is Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden?

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an upcoming action role-playing game by Don't Nod, a studio best known for its catalog of rich and immersive story-driven titles, such as Life Is Strange, Remember Me, and Twin Mirror. Its latest venture, to be published by Focus Entertainment, will feature two playable characters, both of whom devote themselves to the questionable practice of ghost hunting in the fictionalized colony of New Eden.

Much like Don't Nod's previous works, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden will feature a story that is tailored by the choices you make. Playing as two protagonists, each decision will directly impact the other, and vice versa.

Story

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is set in the fictionalized world of New Eden. Antea and Red, dearly beloveds destined to hunt the paranormal, are sent to eradicate the ghostly threats that plague the land. When an investigation goes awry and Antea is wounded beyond repair, the two must travel far and wide in search of a cure to the looming spiritual disaster. How you go about fixing the issue—true to the Don't Nod fashion—depends entirely on your style.

“New Eden, 1695. Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith are lovers and Banishers, ghost-hunters who vowed to protect the living from the threat of lingering ghosts and specters,” the official blurb reads. “Following a disastrous last mission, Antea is fatally wounded, becoming one of the spirits she loathes. In the haunted wilds of North America, the couple desperately searches for a way to liberate Antea from her new plight.”

Gameplay

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, unlike Don't Nod's previous games, will feature more of an action role-playing style. Think of it as leaning more towards Remember Me, but with more swords, ghosts, and folklore. This is, at least from what we've gathered, a rough blueprint of what we can expect from its gameplay. Oh, and like other Don't Nod titles, it will also feature tailorable story arcs. Although not on the same wavelength as Life Is Strange, its in-game actions will lead to various consequences. So, if you're a fan of molding your own tales, then this'll be right up your alley.

“Immerse yourself in a beautiful, intimate and powerful story between two fated lovers,” the blurb continues. “As Banishers, enter the lives of New Eden’s communities and solve haunting cases in a mystical, lore-rich world plagued with supernatural creatures and ancient secrets. Use your wits or combine Antea’s spiritual powers and Red’s arsenal to defeat and banish the souls tormenting the living.”

“Challenging decisions will lay on your path, dramatically impacting your story and the fate of New Eden’s inhabitants—be they living people or wandering souls. How much will you compromise your ghost-hunting vow for the sake of your lover who became one of such spirits?”

Development

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is being developed by Don't Nod, a studio that got its start back in 2013 with Remember Me, a story-driven adventure game that fused classic third-person action with memory remixing. Since then, the studio has retained its own signature formula of making player choice a huge part of each experience.

Don't Nod has confirmed that Focus Entertainment will be the publisher behind Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. According to the developer, there are no plans to bring it to other platforms outside of its launch ones.

The Game Awards 2022 shed light on the project by giving it a two-minute window to reveal its core details. You can check out the standalone trailer from the December event in the embed above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is expected to release in late 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. At present, there are no plans to port the game over to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Nintendo Switch. Furthermore, there is nothing that suggests it will be on PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass, either.

As far as launch editions go, Don't Nod has yet to announce anything outside of its run-of-the-mill standard edition. And if we're lucky, we should be available to pre-order it by Q2 2023. This is bound to change, as it often does with most triple-A games. For the time being though, there isn't anything outside of the base copy.
