100 Best Horror Games of All Time
Some horror games make you jump. The best ones change the way you look at a dark hallway, a quiet house, or the empty space behind your character. From haunted mansions and possessed villages to malfunctioning space stations and disastrous night shifts, the genre has found an impressive number of ways to get under our skin.
This is our ranking of the 100 best horror games of all time, covering PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, handheld, mobile, and VR releases. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space, Fatal Frame, Amnesia, Outlast, and Five Nights at Freddy’s all appear, alongside smaller games that deserve just as much attention. Multiplayer horror, action-horror, and a few horror-heavy RPGs and immersive sims count too: there is more than one way to make a game frightening.
We have ranked these games by their atmosphere, design, storytelling, memorable scares, and lasting contribution to horror. This is an editorial list, so a higher placement does not mean a game will be scarier for every player. Originals and remakes receive separate entries where their design and presentation offer meaningfully different experiences. Recent standouts are judged on what they deliver now, without pretending their long-term influence is already settled.
100. Dementium: The Ward
Release date: 31 2007年10月
Platforms: Nintendo DS; Remastered on Nintendo 3DS; HD rerelease on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Windows PC
Dementium: The Ward makes an abandoned hospital into a compact first-person nightmare on Nintendo DS. Touchscreen aiming and the handheld’s divided display help translate exploration, puzzles, and combat into a format that was unusual for horror at the time. Its corridors can become repetitive, and the original save structure is less forgiving than later versions, but the atmosphere remains notable. The remaster provides a revised route into the same premise. It earns the final slot for showing that handheld horror could be ambitious, immediate, and unsettling rather than a reduced version of a console game.
Trailer: Official Nintendo 3DS remaster teaser — later rerelease.
99. Resident Evil: Revelations 2
Release date: 24 2015年2月 (Episode 1); final main episode 17 2015年3月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Revelations 2 pairs Claire with Moira and Barry with Natalia, using their different abilities to make cooperation part of exploration and combat. The island setting gives the campaign an uneasy, experimental atmosphere, while its episodic structure encourages returning for another piece of the mystery. Resource management and supporting-character tasks keep the action from becoming entirely straightforward. Raid Mode supplies extensive replay value beyond the story. It is not as polished as the franchise’s strongest main entries, but its character combinations and survival emphasis make it an appealing, distinctive chapter.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
98. Resident Evil: Revelations
Release date: 26 2012年1月
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS, Windows PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch
Revelations returns Resident Evil to more confined, exploratory horror aboard the Queen Zenobia, with Jill Valentine providing the main thread through a larger conspiracy. Its episodic structure alternates locations and characters, sometimes diluting the ship’s tension but keeping the pace varied. The scanner adds a reason to examine environments, while Raid Mode gives the combat a separate, replayable outlet. Originally a Nintendo 3DS release, it demonstrated that portable hardware could support a substantial series entry. The later home-platform versions make this atmospheric side chapter easier to explore.

97. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
Release date: 18 2001年5月
Platforms: PlayStation, Dreamcast, Windows PC, PS2; separate Game Boy Color adaptation; PlayStation Classics rereleases on PS4 and PS5
The New Nightmare takes Edward Carnby and Aline Cedrac to Shadow Island, where a missing-person investigation becomes a confrontation with creatures that fear light. Its two protagonists emphasize different aspects of the mystery, encouraging a second perspective on the same location. The flashlight’s interaction with the pre-rendered environments gives exploration a striking mood for its era. Controls and combat can be stiff, but the mansion and surrounding darkness retain their appeal. It is a worthwhile chapter in the pioneering Alone in the Dark franchise, especially for players who enjoy classic fixed-camera survival horror.

96. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted
Release date: 28 2019年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, iOS, Android; VR on PC VR, PS VR, PS VR2 and Meta Quest
Help Wanted brings familiar Five Nights at Freddy’s situations into a collection of challenges, with VR making the animatronics’ scale and proximity far more immediate. Repair tasks and confined encounters turn simple interactions into tests of composure. The collection also works in non-VR forms, though the sense of presence is central to its original appeal. It offers a useful introduction to several of the franchise’s ideas without requiring a deep understanding of every story theory. For VR horror fans, it is an especially clear example of physical closeness transforming an established formula.
Trailer: Official VR launch trailer.
95. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
Release date: 10 2014年11月
Platforms: Windows PC, iOS, Android, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch; legacy Windows Phone edition
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 increases the number of threats and replaces the original door-based defenses with a mask, flashlight, and music-box management. That combination makes attention the main resource: solving one problem can give another animatronic time to advance. The expanding cast and background clues helped establish the franchise’s appetite for hidden story details. It is less immediately readable than the first game and can feel hectic, but the heightened juggling act gives it a separate identity. It is a strong choice if the original’s office-bound tension leaves you wanting a more demanding challenge.
Trailer: Official Scott Cawthon trailer.
94. Five Nights at Freddy’s
Release date: 8 2014年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, iOS, Android, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch; legacy Windows Phone edition
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s makes a security office feel smaller with every passing hour. Cameras, doors, lights, and limited power give you just enough control to become responsible for every mistake. The animatronics are threatening because monitoring one area means neglecting another. Its jump scares are famous, but the underlying resource and attention management is what makes the setup work. The game’s modest scale also helped it spread across PC and mobile audiences. It remains an effective demonstration that horror can emerge from a stationary viewpoint and a handful of well-chosen actions.
Trailer: Official Scott Cawthon trailer.
93. Murder House
Release date: 22 2020年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Murder House builds a tightly focused slasher experience around a news crew investigating a notorious killer’s former home. Fixed cameras, chunky graphics, and deliberately awkward movement evoke older survival-horror games, while the VHS presentation connects it to low-budget horror cinema. Its pacing shifts from investigation to pursuit without needing a sprawling campaign. The approach is deliberately abrasive and graphic, so expect discomfort rather than polish. It earns a place as one of Puppet Combo’s clearest expressions of retro slasher horror, with a compact premise that suits the threat unusually well.

92. Observer
Release date: 15 2017年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch; System Redux on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
Observer turns cyberpunk investigation into an invasive journey through damaged memories and perceptions. Daniel Lazarski’s search inside a decaying apartment building combines detective tools with sequences where reality becomes difficult to read. Rutger Hauer’s performance gives the protagonist a memorable voice, while the oppressive setting keeps the technology from feeling glamorous. It is more focused on atmosphere and narrative than combat. System Redux adds presentation improvements and extra material, providing a newer route into the same core story. Play it if you want horror concerned with identity and technology in a grim urban setting.
Trailer: Official System Redux trailer — later rerelease.
91. Mouthwashing
Release date: 26 2024年9月
Platforms: Windows PC
Mouthwashing uses a stranded cargo ship and a small crew to tell a disturbing story about responsibility, cruelty, and self-deception. Its nonlinear structure changes how you interpret scenes without requiring complex mechanics or frequent combat. The low-poly presentation makes the ship feel claustrophobic, while shifts in perspective and imagery give the narrative a powerful unease. It is short enough to play without a long commitment, but its themes are difficult and its impact can linger. Avoid detailed plot summaries; the gradual process of understanding these characters is the central experience.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
90. Conscript
Release date: 23 2024年7月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Conscript applies survival-horror structure to the First World War, where the surrounding nightmare does not need a supernatural explanation. Its trenches and damaged facilities combine puzzles, inventory decisions, and stressful combat with a bleak sense of historical vulnerability. André’s search for his brother gives the objectives a human focus. The deliberately restrictive movement and demanding encounters can be challenging, but they support the setting rather than feeling incidental. This is a distinctive choice for players who want classic survival mechanics attached to a different kind of horror, rooted in exhaustion, uncertainty, and human conflict.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
89. Crow Country
Release date: 9 2024年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Crow Country uses a charmingly chunky visual style to explore an abandoned theme park that is much less welcoming than it first appears. Its compact layout, environmental puzzles, and resource management make it feel connected to classic survival horror without becoming a slavish imitation. Mara’s investigation gradually reveals the park’s history, and the writing balances strangeness with genuine emotional interest. An exploration-focused mode offers a route for players who prefer puzzles to enemy pressure. It is a particularly strong modern recommendation because it understands the pleasure of learning a strange place room by room.

88. Tormented Souls
Release date: 27 2021年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Tormented Souls deliberately returns to fixed cameras, demanding puzzles, and the resource-conscious habits of classic survival horror. Caroline’s investigation of a hospital-mansion rewards close attention to documents and objects, with interconnected routes gradually making the place easier to understand. Combat can be awkward, and the puzzle solutions are sometimes elaborate, but those qualities are central to the game’s old-school appeal. It is best approached with patience and a willingness to take notes. For players who miss the exploratory rhythm of early Resident Evil, it offers a substantial and atmospheric modern alternative.
Trailer: Official PS4 launch trailer.
87. MADiSON
Release date: 8 2022年7月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch; separate VR edition on PC VR and PS VR2
MADiSON gives Luca an instant camera and a house where photographs reveal more than he wants to know. Puzzles, sound cues, and environmental changes make the camera a tool for advancing the mystery as well as confronting its imagery. The game leans heavily on jump scares, but its most effective sequences build anticipation before delivering them. Some puzzle logic requires patience, so it suits players willing to examine clues carefully. It is a strong pick for compact haunted-house horror, particularly if you enjoy a recurring mechanic that makes ordinary rooms feel unreliable.

86. Still Wakes the Deep
Release date: 18 2024年6月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
Still Wakes the Deep sets its disaster on a Scottish oil rig, using the platform’s confined routes and dangerous machinery to make escape feel physically difficult. The workers’ voices and relationships give the setting a lived-in quality before the supernatural threat takes hold. You mostly navigate, hide, and keep moving rather than fight, which fits the protagonist’s situation. Its linear structure limits experimentation, but it also keeps the pace focused. The strongest moments combine industrial peril with grotesque transformation, creating a short, atmospheric horror story where the workplace itself becomes part of the trap.

85. The Mortuary Assistant
Release date: 2 2022年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
The Mortuary Assistant begins with procedural work and makes that routine increasingly difficult to trust. Preparing bodies gives you a recognizable task structure, while supernatural events interrupt it in ways that force you to question your surroundings. Identifying the demon requires attention rather than simply surviving a sequence of scares. Repeated shifts reveal more of Rebecca’s story and different encounters, giving the short-session format useful replay value. It is especially effective for players who enjoy horror interrupting a believable job. Familiarity eventually changes the fear, but the premise remains clever and uncomfortable.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
84. FAITH: The Unholy Trinity
Release date: 21 2022年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
FAITH uses an extremely limited retro presentation to make possession and religious terror feel disarmingly vivid. John Ward’s investigations rely on simple movement and exorcism mechanics, but the rotoscoped sequences and synthetic voices deliver moments that feel far more detailed than the surrounding graphics. The contrast is unsettling rather than merely nostalgic. Its three chapters build a larger story while preserving the uncertainty of individual encounters. It can be demanding, yet its distinctive audiovisual language is worth the effort. This is an excellent reminder that horror needs intention and timing more than graphical complexity.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
83. World of Horror
Release date: 19 2023年10月 (1.0); early access began 20 2020年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, PS4, Nintendo Switch
World of Horror combines stark one-bit imagery with a tabletop-like structure of investigations, events, and dwindling resources. Each run asks you to balance immediate mysteries against the growing threat of an ancient entity. Its manga-inspired body horror is striking, but the mechanical pressure is just as important: a bad decision can cost health, reason, or precious time. The interface takes some learning, and randomness can be harsh. Once its systems click, the game becomes a compelling source of short, unpredictable nightmares. It is the list’s strongest pick for horror with roguelite investigation.
Trailer: Official 1.0 launch trailer.
82. Mundaun
Release date: 16 2021年3月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Mundaun follows a personal investigation through an Alpine setting rendered in distinctive hand-drawn textures. Its villages, mountains, and folklore give the horror an unusually strong sense of place. Exploration and environmental puzzles establish a slower rhythm, while threatening encounters keep the landscape from becoming merely picturesque. The visual style makes ordinary objects feel slightly wrong without depending on photorealism. It is an excellent choice for players who want a smaller, atmospheric game with cultural and artistic personality. The unease comes from what the place suggests as much as what it directly shows.
Trailer: Official PS5 rerelease trailer.
81. Prey (2017)
Release date: 5 2017年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One
Prey makes Talos I a fascinating place to explore and a dangerous place to assume anything is ordinary. Mimics turn mundane objects into possible threats, while the larger Typhon enemies encourage experimentation with weapons, powers, and environmental tools. The station’s connected layout rewards curiosity and creative routes. It is an immersive sim before it is a pure horror game, but its uncertainty and isolation give that freedom a tense foundation. If you enjoy solving problems several different ways, Prey offers a more flexible kind of fear than a scripted chase through a single corridor.

80. System Shock (2023 remake)
Release date: 30 2023年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
The System Shock remake preserves a hostile space station that you must learn rather than simply follow through waypoints. SHODAN’s presence gives Citadel an antagonist with personality, while resource management, exploration, and interconnected objectives keep progress deliberate. Its vivid visual style updates the original without making the environment too comfortable. Expect to read, map, and think carefully; this is less guided than many contemporary campaigns. That resistance is part of its appeal. It offers a strong modern entry into immersive survival horror, where the station’s systems and your own preparedness matter as much as shooting.
Trailer: Official console launch trailer.
79. BioShock
Release date: 21 2007年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, Xbox 360, PS3, macOS; Remastered on Windows PC, macOS, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch; legacy iOS port
BioShock is primarily an atmospheric shooter, but Rapture’s ruined utopia often feels like a haunted house on a city scale. Splicers, audio recordings, and abandoned domestic spaces make the disaster human before the larger mystery takes over. Plasmids and environmental interactions give combat variety, while the art deco setting remains instantly recognizable. Its horror is strongest when you slow down and notice what happened between the architecture and the bodies. It earns a place as a horror-adjacent landmark whose world-building makes danger and decay central to the experience.
Trailer: Original launch trailer (archival upload).
78. The Quarry
Release date: 10 2022年6月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
The Quarry sends summer-camp counselors into a night where social decisions and survival decisions become difficult to separate. Its performances and cinematic presentation make the cast easy to follow, while the branching structure encourages comparing outcomes. The interactivity is relatively light, with exploration and quick-time events supporting the story rather than dominating it. That makes it especially accessible for groups and players who enjoy horror films. It is longer and more elaborate than a typical Dark Pictures entry, offering a generous slasher-style experience where a careless choice can change someone’s night dramatically.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
77. Doom 3
Release date: 3 2004年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, Linux, macOS, Xbox; BFG Edition on Windows PC, PS3, Xbox 360; later rerelease on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch; Nvidia Shield Android edition and PS VR adaptation
Doom 3 slows the franchise’s pace and makes the Mars facility a place to inspect nervously before the inevitable firefight. Darkness, audio logs, and corrupted industrial spaces give the opening hours a strong haunted-workplace atmosphere. Its monsters become more familiar as the campaign progresses, and the repetition can reduce the fear. Even so, the presentation and close-range encounters distinguish it from Doom’s other incarnations. Different editions change flashlight handling, so the experience varies. It belongs here for committing to a sustained horror mood within a franchise normally associated with explosive forward momentum.
Trailer: Official BFG Edition trailer — later rerelease.
76. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
Release date: 22 2021年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
House of Ashes puts soldiers on opposing sides of the Iraq War into an underground threat that complicates their existing loyalties. The setting gives Supermassive’s choice-driven formula a strong sense of confinement, while the ensemble relationships make cooperation part of the drama. Decisions and reaction sequences influence who survives, encouraging replaying to test different outcomes. It is one of the more action-oriented Dark Pictures entries, but the creatures and descending environments maintain a clear horror identity. The shared-play options are especially effective if you enjoy debating whether a character should trust someone in a crisis.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
75. Metro Exodus
Release date: 15 2019年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S; formerly Stadia
Metro Exodus opens the series beyond Moscow’s tunnels while preserving the dangers of ruined environments and limited supplies. Its larger regions invite careful scavenging, weapon maintenance, and choosing how to approach hostile encounters. That freedom changes the pace, but sections in dark structures and contaminated spaces still draw on the franchise’s horror strengths. The traveling community aboard the Aurora provides an emotional anchor between threats. It is broader survival action rather than uninterrupted terror, and it earns its place by making exploration feel fragile even when the world becomes more open.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
74. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Release date: 30 2019年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Man of Medan brings Supermassive’s branching horror to a smaller cast and a ghost-ship mystery. Dialogue, exploration, and quick reactions determine how the characters’ relationships and survival prospects develop. Its shared-story and movie-night options make it particularly appealing as a group experience, where different players can disagree about what a scene means. Some outcomes and transitions are less smooth than the studio’s strongest work, but the maritime setting supplies an effective atmosphere. It is a compact, replayable choice for anyone who wants to steer an ensemble horror story rather than master conventional combat.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
73. Metro 2033
Release date: 16 2010年3月
Platforms: Windows PC, Xbox 360; Redux on Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Metro 2033 makes Moscow’s underground stations feel like fragments of civilization surviving inside a hostile world. Ammunition, filters, and movement through contaminated spaces create a steady awareness of your resources. The surface offers some of its strongest horror, where limited time and poor visibility make each expedition uncomfortable. Mutants provide immediate threats, while the political and supernatural elements give the setting more depth. It is a shooter, but its vulnerable exploration and oppressive atmosphere justify its place. Redux offers a revised version for newer platforms without changing the journey’s central appeal.
Trailer: Official Metro Redux trailer — later rerelease.
72. Alan Wake
Release date: 14 2010年5月
Platforms: Xbox 360, Windows PC; Remastered on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Alan Wake turns a missing-person search into a supernatural thriller where darkness transforms ordinary people into dangerous enemies. Flashlight use and gunplay create a recognizable combat rhythm, while manuscript pages complicate Alan’s understanding of events. Bright Falls and its surrounding forests give the story a convincing setting before the stranger developments take hold. The episodic structure and television influences make it an easy game to settle into. Its sequel is more ambitious horror, but this original remains an engaging introduction to Remedy’s world and an effective example of light becoming a survival tool.
Trailer: Official Alan Wake Remastered trailer — later rerelease.
71. Dead Rising
Release date: 8 2006年8月
Platforms: Xbox 360; HD rerelease on Windows PC, PS4 and Xbox One
Dead Rising traps photojournalist Frank West in a shopping mall and gives him an absurd range of improvised weapons. The comedy is obvious, but the timer, survivor rescues, and dense zombie crowds add real pressure beneath the jokes. Planning a route matters because you cannot comfortably do everything at once. Its original structure can be unforgiving, particularly before you understand the schedule. That friction is part of what makes the mall feel like a disaster rather than a casual playground. It is a distinctive horror-action game with a strong sense of place and a deliberately unruly personality.
Trailer: Official Deluxe Remaster teaser — later adaptation.
70. Left 4 Dead 2
Release date: 17 2009年11月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, Xbox 360
Left 4 Dead 2 adds melee weapons, new special infected, and campaigns with a wider range of moods and environments. Its best moments arise when several understandable systems collide: someone needs help, ammunition is low, and a tank appears at the worst possible time. The expanded toolkit gives teams more ways to recover, but cooperation remains the essential resource. It is an action-horror game whose tension comes from shared responsibility. Years of community support and replayable campaigns have helped it endure, though the core design is strong enough to explain that longevity without relying on nostalgia.
Trailer: Official Valve trailer.
69. Left 4 Dead
Release date: 18 2008年11月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Xbox 360
Left 4 Dead distills cooperative zombie survival into a wonderfully readable loop: stay together, share supplies, and keep moving. Special infected punish separation, while the AI Director varies pressure enough to make familiar routes feel lively. Its four protagonists and economical environmental storytelling give the campaigns personality without slowing them down. The horror is often immediate panic rather than sustained psychological dread, especially with friends. That does not diminish how effective the design is. It remains a defining example of teamwork making monster encounters more interesting than simply increasing enemy numbers.
Trailer: Official Valve promotional trailer.
68. Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Release date: 4 2022年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Dying Light 2 builds its identity around a larger traversal system and a city shaped by competing survivors. Rooftop movement, stamina, and tools make exploring Villedor satisfying, while nighttime expeditions and dark interiors provide the clearest horror pressure. Its branching story and broad activity list can be uneven, so the strongest reason to play is the freedom of movement and the danger surrounding it. Updates have also changed the experience substantially over time. It earns a place as an ambitious action-horror sandbox, particularly for players who want cooperative exploration alongside their infected encounters.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
67. Dying Light
Release date: 27 2015年1月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Dying Light makes movement part of the survival strategy. Harran’s rooftops let you escape crowds, improvise routes, and build confidence during the day, then night changes the risks dramatically. The stronger nocturnal threats make the same city feel unfamiliar without needing an entirely new map. Weapon crafting and cooperative play support the open-world structure, but the parkour is what gives its zombie encounters a distinctive tempo. The story is not its greatest strength; the way exploration turns into a frantic chase is. It remains one of the best action-heavy choices for horror fans.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
66. Sons of the Forest
Release date: 22 2024年2月 (1.0); early access began 23 2023年2月
Platforms: Windows PC
Sons of the Forest expands the island-survival idea with more detailed construction, companions, and a broader range of threats. The freedom to build a comfortable-looking base can make the surrounding danger feel even more intrusive. Caves and underground spaces provide the strongest concentrated horror, while exploration and cooperation create a slower, player-led rhythm above ground. It is better suited to people who enjoy crafting and experimentation than those looking for a tightly scripted story. The full release develops the original game’s appeal into a substantial survival playground with plenty of disturbing discoveries.
Trailer: Official 1.0 trailer, hosted by IGN.
65. The Forest
Release date: 30 2018年4月 (1.0); early access began 30 2014年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4
The Forest begins with survival basics and gradually reveals a much more unsettling island. Building a shelter and gathering food create a practical routine, while nearby inhabitants and cave systems challenge the idea that you can ever fully control the place. Cooperative play turns preparation into a shared project without removing the dangers underground. The contrast between open-air exploration and cramped cave horror is particularly effective. Its crafting and survival mechanics demand more time than a linear campaign, but they make the fear of losing progress feel personal. It is an excellent survival-sandbox horror pick.
Trailer: Official announcement trailer.
64. Lethal Company
Release date: 23 2023年10月 (early access)
Platforms: Windows PC
Lethal Company makes scavenging feel ridiculous until the team’s quota and the creatures inside a facility start working against each other. Players gather scrap, coordinate routes, and decide when the potential reward stops being worth another room. Proximity communication gives separation real consequences and makes a missing voice more troubling than an on-screen warning. Much of its appeal comes from the stories players create through mistakes. It remains an early-access game, so systems can change, but its combination of workplace absurdity and sudden danger already makes it a standout social-horror experience.
Trailer: Official trailer.
63. Phasmophobia
Release date: 18 2020年9月 (early access)
Platforms: Windows PC with optional PC VR, PS5 with optional PS VR2, Xbox Series X|S
Phasmophobia makes ghost hunting a cooperative process of gathering evidence while trying not to become the next victim. Equipment gives the team specific jobs, and voice communication turns small discoveries into lively discussions. The fear often arrives when routine investigation suddenly becomes a hunt and everyone’s confident plan collapses. Familiarity reduces some uncertainty, but changing ghost behavior and difficulty options provide reasons to return. It is particularly effective with friends willing to take the investigation seriously for a few minutes before panic takes over. Optional VR adds presence without being required for the core experience.

62. Dead by Daylight
Release date: 14 2016年6月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch; separate mobile edition discontinued; formerly Stadia
Dead by Daylight gives horror fans a continuing game of pursuit between one killer and four survivors. Repairing generators, rescuing teammates, and managing escape routes create a match structure that can produce both panic and clever teamwork. Its licensed chapters bring recognizable film and game characters into the same arena, while original killers expand its identity beyond those crossovers. Balance, progression, and familiarity can change how frightening it feels, but the social tension remains compelling. It is the list’s essential asymmetric multiplayer pick, especially if you enjoy learning both sides of a chase.

61. Limbo
Release date: 21 2010年7月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android
Limbo uses silhouettes, sparse sound, and sudden danger to make a simple platforming journey feel like a nightmare. Its puzzles repeatedly ask you to test the behavior of a hostile world, sometimes learning through an unpleasant failure. The spider remains one of its most effective threats, but the industrial sections sustain the mood through scale and uncertainty. It is brief, mechanically straightforward, and often harsh. That concentration gives it lasting value: a clear example of visual restraint making horror more memorable than an abundance of explanation or spectacle.
Trailer: Official in-game trailer.
60. Inside
Release date: 29 2016年6月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Apple TV
Inside follows a boy through a controlled, industrial world where observation and movement become the main means of survival. Its side-scrolling puzzles are carefully integrated into the environment, keeping the story moving without explanatory dialogue. The horror comes from bodies, machinery, and systems whose purpose you slowly begin to suspect. Animation and sound give even simple actions a disturbing weight. It belongs here as an atmospheric horror-adjacent experience rather than a traditional survival game. Avoid discussing the ending beforehand; the journey’s final developments work best when you encounter them without a checklist of expectations.

59. Little Nightmares II
Release date: 11 2021年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch; formerly Stadia
Little Nightmares II expands the first game’s approach with Mono, Six, and a world of distorted schools, hospitals, and broadcast imagery. Their companionship provides moments of reassurance without making the environment safe. Puzzles and stealth rely on watching behavior and reading the scene, while the oversized enemies give each area a distinctive personality. Some trial-and-error sequences can interrupt the mood, but the visual storytelling remains remarkably confident. It is a strong sequel because it develops the world’s themes and emotional possibilities instead of merely adding more of the same chase sequences.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
58. Little Nightmares
Release date: 28 2017年4月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android; Enhanced Edition on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2; formerly Stadia
Little Nightmares turns childhood vulnerability into a grotesque journey through the Maw. Six’s small size makes ordinary furniture, kitchens, and adult figures feel overwhelming, while simple environmental puzzles keep the focus on observation and escape. Its presentation resembles an uneasy storybook, with enough ambiguity to let the setting remain mysterious. The short length is part of its strength: each major sequence has room to establish a new threat without overstaying its welcome. It is an excellent introduction to horror for players more interested in atmosphere and visual storytelling than weapons or elaborate resource systems.

57. The Outlast Trials
Release date: 5 2024年3月 (1.0); early access began 18 2023年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
The Outlast Trials takes the series’ helplessness into a cooperative setting, casting players as subjects in Murkoff’s cruel experiments. Objectives require moving through hostile spaces, managing supplies, and deciding whether helping a teammate is worth the risk. Friends can make the experience funny, but separation and sudden pursuit quickly restore the tension. Its progression systems encourage repeated trials rather than a single linear escape. It is best for players who want social horror with demanding tasks and grotesque spectacle, while solo play preserves a different, more isolated challenge.
Trailer: Official 1.0 launch trailer.
56. Outlast 2
Release date: 25 2017年4月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Outlast 2 exchanges the asylum for an isolated community whose religious extremism and violence turn investigation into a desperate escape. Blake’s camera and night vision remain essential, but the more open environments can make finding a route under pressure especially difficult. Its imagery is graphic and its pursuit sequences relentless, so this is a forceful rather than restrained horror experience. The school sequences supply a different kind of unease amid the brutality. It earns its place through sustained intensity and striking audiovisual work, even when its navigation and pacing become frustrating.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
55. Amnesia: Rebirth
Release date: 20 2020年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
Amnesia: Rebirth follows Tasi through an Algerian desert expedition that gives way to ruins, darkness, and deeply personal fears. It puts more emphasis on narrative and character motivation than The Dark Descent, with memories and discoveries gradually clarifying what is at stake. Physical puzzles and avoidance remain central, but the setting gives Frictional’s familiar approach a different atmosphere. Its pacing is deliberate, and the story asks you to stay engaged through uncomfortable developments. It is a strong choice for players who want their horror journey to have emotional stakes beyond simply escaping the next creature.

54. Penumbra: Overture
Release date: 30 2007年3月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux
Penumbra: Overture sends Philip into an abandoned mine with a physics-driven approach to exploration. You pull, stack, and manipulate objects in ways that make the environment feel unusually tangible. Its melee combat is awkward, but the limited ability to defend yourself reinforces the need to avoid trouble and think carefully. Notes, radio contact, and distant sounds turn the mine into more than a collection of puzzle rooms. The game shows its age, yet its combination of physical interaction and first-person vulnerability helped establish an important direction for PC horror.
Trailer: Official trailer.
53. Penumbra: Black Plague
Release date: 12 2008年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux
Penumbra: Black Plague narrows Frictional’s early horror formula around evasion, physical puzzles, and disturbing discoveries. Its underground facility is oppressive precisely because your ability to understand and manipulate objects matters more than your ability to fight. The story follows naturally from Overture, so playing that first provides the strongest context. Black Plague is the more focused experience, stripping away some of its predecessor’s rough combat and letting vulnerability drive the tension. It is a key step toward Amnesia, but it also deserves attention for its own strange narrative and tactile problem-solving.

52. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water
Release date: 27 2014年9月
Platforms: Wii U; remaster on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Maiden of Black Water sends its characters to a mountain associated with disappearances, dangerous rituals, and supernatural presences. Water affects vulnerability and atmosphere, while the Camera Obscura again asks you to face what you would rather avoid. The Wii U version’s GamePad gave photography a distinctive physical element; later versions translate the idea to more conventional controls. Its mission structure can feel repetitive, but the locations and ghost stories give exploration a strong mood. It is an accessible modern route into Fatal Frame, with a particular emphasis on landscape, isolation, and melancholy.
Trailer: Official remaster launch trailer — later rerelease.
51. Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Release date: 31 2008年7月
Platforms: Wii; remaster on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Mask of the Lunar Eclipse uses an abandoned island’s hospital, rituals, and lost memories to create a lingering sense of dislocation. Multiple protagonists give the mystery different perspectives, while camera combat keeps encounters tense and personal. The original Wii release was limited to Japan; the later remaster opened this chapter to a much wider audience. Its slower movement and deliberate pacing may take adjustment, but they suit a game built around examining haunted spaces. It is a worthwhile Fatal Frame entry for anyone who prefers atmosphere, folklore, and gradual revelation to constant action.

Trailer: Official remaster launch trailer — later rerelease.
50. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Release date: 8 2009年12月
Platforms: Wii, PS2, PSP
Shattered Memories reimagines Harry Mason’s search with psychological profiling, exploration, and chase sequences rather than conventional combat. The Wii version’s flashlight control gives investigation a pleasing physical quality, while your responses and behavior help shape details of the experience. Its frozen nightmares separate danger from the quieter search for answers, producing a different rhythm from the original Silent Hill. It is best treated as an alternative interpretation, not a straightforward remake or substitute. The emotional payoff and willingness to revise the formula make it one of the series’ most interesting departures.
Trailer: Official Konami promotional trailer.
49. Siren
Release date: 6 2003年11月
Platforms: PS2; emulated rereleases on PS4 and PS5
Siren makes understanding the enemy a requirement for survival. Sight-jacking lets you borrow a hostile character’s perspective, creating a strange intimacy with the people searching for you. Its fragmented storytelling and demanding mission conditions turn Hanuda into a place you must gradually learn, often through failure. This is one of the least forgiving games here, so expect older controls and occasionally opaque objectives. The reward is a relentlessly bleak atmosphere and a structure unlike most of its contemporaries. It remains an essential reference point for stealth-focused Japanese horror.
Trailer: Original TGS 2003 trailer (archival upload).
48. Clock Tower (1995)
Release date: 14 1995年9月
Platforms: Super Famicom, Windows PC, PlayStation, WonderSwan; Clock Tower: Rewind on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
The original Clock Tower creates suspense with a comparatively simple set of actions: explore, investigate, hide, and try to survive Scissorman. Jennifer’s vulnerability gives the point-and-click structure a sense of urgency that ordinary adventure games rarely achieve. Randomness and multiple outcomes encourage repeat visits, while the mansion’s layout becomes a map of possible escape routes. Its age is evident, but its pursuit-driven design remains influential. Clock Tower: Rewind makes this specific 1995 game easier to access internationally; it should not be confused with the later PlayStation sequel that also used the Clock Tower name.
Trailer: Official Clock Tower: Rewind trailer — later rerelease.
47. Rule of Rose
Release date: 19 2006年1月
Platforms: PS2
Rule of Rose is better remembered for its atmosphere and narrative than its awkward combat. Jennifer’s journey through a cruel hierarchy of children, memories, and unsettling spaces unfolds with deliberate ambiguity. Brown, her dog, helps with exploration and provides a rare source of reassurance. The game’s disturbing ideas are grounded in relationships and power rather than simply an abundance of monsters. It requires patience with its mechanics, but its melancholy tone and unusual storytelling earn a place on this list. Approach it as a difficult, emotionally troubling curiosity rather than a smooth modern action game.
Trailer: Official Atlus trailer.
46. Haunting Ground
Release date: 21 2005年4月
Platforms: PS2
Haunting Ground puts Fiona and her dog Hewie in a castle where powerful pursuers make direct confrontation a poor option. Building trust with Hewie matters both mechanically and emotionally, giving the game a relationship worth protecting amid the threat. Fiona’s panic can make escape more difficult, reinforcing her vulnerability without turning every encounter into a scripted chase. Its themes of exploitation and confinement are unpleasant by design, and the experience is often demanding. The combination of companion interaction, stealth, and persistent pursuit makes it a distinctive PS2 survival-horror game.
Trailer: Official trailer, archived by IGN.
45. Parasite Eve
Release date: 29 1998年3月
Platforms: PlayStation; PSone Classics rerelease on compatible PS3 and PSP systems
Parasite Eve follows Aya Brea through a biological nightmare in New York, combining horror imagery with role-playing systems and tactical movement. Battles let you reposition while managing commands, so danger has a different rhythm from the fixed-camera survival games around it. Weapon customization and character progression create a satisfying sense of preparation between encounters. Its cinematic presentation was ambitious for the original PlayStation, and its transformations remain memorable. It is a strong choice if you want horror with more structured combat and a distinctive science-fiction mystery rather than a steady sequence of pursuit scares.
44. Dino Crisis
Release date: 1 1999年7月
Platforms: PlayStation, Windows PC, Dreamcast
Dino Crisis asks a useful question: what happens to survival horror when your enemies are fast, forceful dinosaurs? Regina’s mission keeps the locked doors, puzzles, and resource decisions associated with classic Resident Evil, but its creatures make movement and route planning feel different. The research facility’s real-time environments add to the sense of a place under physical assault. It can be demanding, and its systems take some adjustment, yet the premise never feels like a superficial monster swap. This is a memorable action-survival hybrid that deserves more attention than nostalgia alone can provide.
Trailer: Official GOG rerelease trailer.
43. Silent Hill f
Release date: 25 2025年9月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
Silent Hill f takes the series’ nightmare into 1960s Japan, where Hinako’s familiar surroundings are transformed by disturbing floral growth and other threats. The new setting gives its body horror and psychological themes a distinct visual identity. Combat has a more prominent role than in several earlier entries, which changes the pace and may divide players expecting a quieter experience. Its strongest qualities lie in the relationship between social pressures, personal fear, and surreal imagery. Like Requiem, it is still establishing its long-term reputation, but its ambitious direction already makes it worth including.

42. Resident Evil Requiem
Release date: 27 2026年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
Resident Evil Requiem earns its early place through the contrast between Grace’s vulnerable survival sequences and Leon’s more forceful approach to danger. That change in perspective lets the game move between intimate tension and action without asking one character to do everything. Its return to the franchise’s long-running history also gives familiar locations and connections fresh weight. It is too recent to judge its influence alongside the classics, so this ranking reflects the experience itself rather than a settled legacy. For players following the modern Resident Evil run, it is an important and compelling chapter.

41. Visage
Release date: 30 2020年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Visage builds much of its terror around wandering a house that refuses to behave like a stable, understandable space. Its different chapters introduce separate histories and threats, while light sources, sanity, and environmental changes make exploration uneasy. The pace is slow enough that an ordinary hallway can become a serious decision. Puzzles and navigation can be obscure, so a little patience is essential. When its atmosphere works, though, few modern haunted-house games feel this oppressive. It is a strong option for players who want to study a place carefully while wishing they could leave it.
Trailer: Official release gameplay trailer.
40. Devotion
Release date: 19 2019年2月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS
Devotion makes an apartment and a family’s history feel progressively harder to inhabit. Ordinary objects, changing rooms, and carefully staged transitions reveal the pressures surrounding the household, while religious imagery and sound deepen the unease. It works best when you let the details accumulate rather than rush toward the next scare. The experience is relatively short, but its emotional weight comes from how closely the domestic setting and tragedy connect. Red Candle’s follow-up to Detention is another excellent example of culturally specific horror creating an impact that extends beyond its immediate supernatural events.
Trailer: Official short trailer.
39. Detention
Release date: 13 2017年1月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android
Detention places its supernatural school nightmare in the context of Taiwan’s White Terror period. The side-scrolling presentation keeps the mechanics clear, while documents, rituals, and recurring imagery gradually expose a much more painful human story. Puzzles and encounters support that atmosphere instead of trying to overwhelm it with constant action. Its specificity is a strength: the setting and cultural references make the horror feel rooted in a particular place and history. This is a compact, emotionally forceful game for players who value narrative and symbolism as much as immediate scares.
Trailer: Official console launch trailer.
38. Fatal Frame III: The Tormented
Release date: 28 2005年7月
Platforms: PS2
Fatal Frame III connects its haunted dreams to the characters’ waking lives, making sleep itself feel like an invitation to danger. Rei’s photography and the changing perspectives give the mystery several emotional angles, with grief and guilt woven into the supernatural threat. Returning to the same spaces strengthens their familiarity before the game undermines it. Camera combat remains a tense exercise in getting closer than you would prefer. It rewards knowledge of the earlier games, but its central themes stand on their own. The slower pace is an advantage when you want horror that has time to settle.
Trailer: Original official trailer (archival upload).
37. The Evil Within
Release date: 14 2014年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
The Evil Within drags Sebastian through shifting environments that rarely let him establish a comfortable routine. Ammunition is valuable, traps can be turned to your advantage, and matches make corpse management another survival decision. Its strongest encounters force you to work with awkward spaces and limited resources rather than rely on aim alone. The story can feel deliberately disorienting, and some difficulty spikes are abrasive. Still, the grotesque set pieces and carefully staged panic give it a distinctive identity. This is an effective choice for anyone who likes survival horror to feel messy, dangerous, and demanding.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
36. Until Dawn
Release date: 25 2015年8月
Platforms: PS4; separate 2024 remake on PS5 and Windows PC
Until Dawn turns a group’s mountain retreat into an interactive horror film where decisions can have lasting consequences. Exploration, dialogue choices, and quick-time sequences give you control over who reaches the end, while the cast’s relationships make survival more complicated than simply choosing the obviously sensible option. Its playful use of familiar slasher conventions gives the later developments room to surprise. It is particularly enjoyable with friends debating decisions, though a solitary playthrough keeps the tension intact. The original PS4 version remains an excellent example of branching storytelling making horror feel participatory.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
35. Silent Hill 4: The Room
Release date: 17 2004年6月
Platforms: PS2, Xbox, Windows PC
Silent Hill 4 begins with an apartment that should be a refuge and steadily makes that assumption impossible to maintain. Henry’s room connects to strange locations where repeating encounters and hostile spirits create a different rhythm from the earlier games. The apartment’s deterioration is especially effective because you keep returning to it. Escort sections and repetition can test your patience, but the central concept remains one of the series’ boldest. It is a flawed, fascinating experiment in making home itself threatening, with imagery and sound that can be difficult to shake.
Trailer: Original E3 2004 trailer (archival upload).
34. The Last of Us
Release date: 14 2013年6月
Platforms: PS3; Remastered on PS4; Part I remake on PS5 and Windows PC
The Last of Us mixes infected horror with a character-driven journey through a collapsed society. Its scariest encounters depend on sound, movement, and the uncomfortable decision between sneaking past danger and spending scarce ammunition. Clickers are memorable because they change how you approach a space, rather than merely absorbing more damage. The human conflict is just as central, so this is broader than a traditional monster game. Its storytelling and measured survival sequences earn its place. The remaster and Part I remake offer different modern routes into the original Joel-and-Ellie campaign.
Trailer: Official Part I remake trailer — later adaptation.
33. Dead Space (2023 remake)
Release date: 27 2023年1月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
The Dead Space remake rebuilds the Ishimura as a more connected ship and gives Isaac a voice without losing the original’s industrial dread. Revised zero-gravity movement and expanded exploration make returning to earlier areas more rewarding. Combat still revolves around dismemberment, but new visual damage makes the condition of enemies easier to read. It earns its own place through the way these changes alter navigation and encounters. The original remains leaner and harsher in certain respects; the remake is an excellent modern survival-horror game that thoughtfully revisits the same catastrophic work assignment.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
32. Resident Evil – Code: Veronica
Release date: 3 2000年2月
Platforms: Dreamcast; Code: Veronica X on PS2, GameCube, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4
Code: Veronica expands the Redfield siblings’ story across a prison island and an Antarctic facility, keeping the series’ elaborate keys, limited supplies, and monstrous experiments. Its real-time backgrounds change the presentation, but the underlying rhythm is firmly classic Resident Evil. The campaign is lengthy and sometimes unforgiving, particularly when resources are poorly managed around major encounters. That difficulty is worth knowing about before diving in. Its strange antagonists and ambitious locations give it a character of its own, and it remains an important chapter for anyone following the franchise beyond Raccoon City.
Trailer: Official Code: Veronica X HD trailer — later rerelease.
31. Fatal Frame
Release date: 13 2001年12月
Platforms: PS2, Xbox
The original Fatal Frame sends Miku into Himuro Mansion with a camera that can capture more than ordinary photographs. Ghost encounters ask you to watch, aim, and wait, turning the act of defending yourself into a test of nerve. Documents and memories gradually reveal the mansion’s history, making its rooms feel haunted by specific events. The controls and pacing are unmistakably from the PS2 era, but the central mechanic still feels unusually intimate. This is the starting point for one of horror’s most recognizable ideas: the safest response to a ghost may require looking straight at it.
Trailer: Original E3 2002 trailer (archival upload).
30. Bloodborne
Release date: 24 2015年3月
Platforms: PS4
Bloodborne is an action RPG, but Yharnam’s streets, grotesque transformations, and gradual descent into cosmic horror make its place here easy to justify. Aggressive combat encourages you to move toward danger, while the world repeatedly exposes how little your hunter understands. The shift from gothic beasts to more unsettling discoveries is one of its great pleasures, so avoid detailed story explanations beforehand. Its difficulty can be a barrier, yet learning encounters makes the city more compelling rather than less frightening. Few games match its consistency of art direction, creature design, and oppressive atmosphere.

29. Siren: Blood Curse
Release date: 24 2008年7月
Platforms: PS3
Siren: Blood Curse retells the series’ central nightmare through an episodic structure and a cast whose perspectives keep shifting. Its sight-jacking ability lets you see through enemies’ eyes, which is helpful information delivered in a particularly disturbing way. Hanuda’s hostile residents are not simply obstacles to shoot; their routines and awareness make stealth essential. The game is more approachable than the first Siren, but it preserves the series’ grim atmosphere and uncomfortable sense of being watched. It is an excellent choice for players who want horror built around observation, hiding, and learning the geography of danger.

28. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Release date: 22 1999年9月
Platforms: PlayStation, Windows PC, Dreamcast, GameCube
Nemesis makes Resident Evil 3’s ruined streets feel less predictable than the police station in the second game. Jill Valentine is trying to escape Raccoon City, but a pursuer with persistence and heavy weaponry keeps turning straightforward objectives into problems. The original’s live choices and variable encounters add useful replay value, while ammunition crafting encourages planning around your preferred weapons. It is a faster, more outward-looking survival-horror adventure without abandoning resource management. The 2020 remake has its own strengths, but this original earns the slot for its fuller exploration of Jill’s desperate escape.
Trailer: Original promotional trailer (archival upload).
27. F.E.A.R.
Release date: 18 2005年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, Xbox 360, PS3
F.E.A.R. is both an accomplished shooter and an unsettling supernatural story. Slow-motion firefights let you appreciate the enemy tactics and destructive effects, then the game abruptly withdraws that sense of control with visions, empty corridors, and Alma’s appearances. The contrast is the point: being heavily armed does not help much against something you cannot understand. Some office environments repeat more than they should, but the combat gives the quieter sequences room to breathe. If you prefer horror with responsive gunplay, this remains a benchmark for balancing military action and psychological unease.
Trailer: Original E3 2005 trailer (archival upload).
26. Condemned: Criminal Origins
Release date: 22 2005年11月
Platforms: Xbox 360, Windows PC
Condemned places FBI investigator Ethan Thomas in decaying urban spaces where violence usually happens at arm’s length. Pipes, boards, and improvised weapons make each fight feel ugly and uncertain, while forensic tools punctuate the action with investigation. Its atmosphere draws strength from abandoned buildings and the sense that something is wrong before you can explain why. The famous mannequin sequence works because the game has already taught you to distrust its spaces. Combat can be rough, but that roughness suits the premise. It remains a distinctive meeting point between crime thriller, supernatural mystery, and survival horror.
Trailer: Original promotional trailer (archival upload).
25. Darkwood
Release date: 17 2017年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
Darkwood proves that a top-down view can be every bit as frightening as a first-person camera. By day, you explore a diseased forest, gather supplies, and meet people whose motives are difficult to read. At night, you return to a hideout and prepare for whatever might test its defenses. Limited visibility and carefully placed sound make events outside your line of sight especially troubling. It earns its reputation through atmosphere and difficult decisions rather than a constant supply of jump scares. The world is strange, harsh, and absorbing enough to make each safe morning feel like an achievement.

24. System Shock 2
Release date: 11 1999年8月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux; 25th Anniversary Remaster on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
System Shock 2 combines survival horror with character building, exploration, and the constant temptation to spend resources on the wrong upgrade. The Von Braun’s ruined decks tell a story through logs and environmental details, while its enemies sound disturbingly aware of what is happening to them. Weapons degrade, supplies matter, and your chosen skills shape the problems you can solve. It is not the most immediately accessible game here, but patience reveals an exceptionally influential design. The anniversary remaster offers a newer route into its systems while preserving the central experience of surviving a hostile, interconnected ship.
Trailer: Official 25th Anniversary Remaster trailer — later rerelease.
23. Amnesia: The Bunker
Release date: 6 2023年6月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Amnesia: The Bunker compresses survival horror into a place you must learn well enough to improvise under pressure. A creature hunts through a First World War bunker, while a fuel-hungry generator makes light a precious, temporary advantage. Doors, tools, traps, and noise all matter, giving you several ways to solve problems and just as many ways to draw unwanted attention. The compact layout makes small decisions feel consequential. It is Frictional at its most mechanically focused: a tense relationship between preparation, experimentation, and the growing certainty that your plan will not survive unchanged.

22. Resident Evil Village
Release date: 7 2021年5月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Nintendo Switch 2; PS VR2 mode; Nintendo Switch Cloud Version; formerly Stadia
Resident Evil Village builds its campaign around contrasting locations and threats, from the imposing castle to a much smaller, deeply unpleasant house. Ethan’s journey is more action-heavy than Resident Evil 7, but that variety stops its horror from becoming monotonous. Exploration, treasure hunting, and weapon upgrades add a satisfying adventure structure between the scares. The game is strongest when it lets each major area establish its own rules and atmosphere. It is a particularly good choice for players who enjoy the series’ monsters and world-building alongside their survival pressure. The optional PS VR2 mode offers another perspective on its environments.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
21. Outlast
Release date: 4 2013年9月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Outlast gives investigative journalist Miles Upshur a camera and almost no meaningful way to defend himself. Mount Massive Asylum becomes a maze of pursuit, hiding places, and increasingly awful discoveries. Night vision lets you see through the dark, but its batteries create another resource to worry about. The campaign relies on graphic imagery and chase sequences more than subtle suggestion, so its style will not suit everyone. Within that style, though, Red Barrels achieves a sustained sense of panic. It is an influential example of a horror game making escape, rather than victory, the immediate goal.

20. The Evil Within 2
Release date: 13 2017年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One
The Evil Within 2 gives Sebastian a clearer emotional motivation and more room to explore the nightmare around him. Union mixes open neighborhoods with tightly directed horror sequences, so you can scavenge, investigate side stories, or cautiously pursue the next objective. That freedom makes the world feel less like a corridor of punishments than the first game. Its grotesque imagery is still plentiful, and its strongest antagonists leave an impression beyond their boss fights. The result is an unusually generous survival-horror sequel, offering tactical options without making Sebastian’s predicament feel comfortable.

19. Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Release date: 21 1998年1月
Platforms: PlayStation, Windows PC, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, GameCube
The original Resident Evil 2 takes the mansion formula into a citywide outbreak and gives Leon and Claire contrasting routes through the disaster. The police station is a superb puzzle box, full of shortcuts and spaces that become familiar enough to make later threats more effective. Its scenario structure encourages replaying to see how the characters’ experiences connect. Pre-rendered backgrounds, fixed viewpoints, and economical cutscenes create a distinctive rhythm the remake cannot simply duplicate. This is essential classic survival horror: approachable, resource-conscious, and packed with memorable creatures, locations, and escalating trouble.

18. Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake)
Release date: 8 2024年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
The Silent Hill 2 remake brings James’s journey into a closer camera perspective and expands the spaces you need to investigate. More involved combat changes the tempo, while carefully staged environments and strong sound design preserve much of the town’s oppressive character. The new performances give familiar conversations a different texture without removing their ambiguity. It does not replace the original’s specific visual language, which is why both versions appear here. As a modern interpretation, however, it makes a difficult, emotionally complicated story accessible to players who might struggle with older controls and presentation.

17. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Release date: 24 2002年6月
Platforms: GameCube
Eternal Darkness follows different characters across history, connecting their encounters with an ancient supernatural threat. Its famous sanity effects play with the presentation itself, making you question whether an apparent problem belongs to the character, the game, or your equipment. Those tricks are memorable, but the shifting protagonists and interlocking narrative are just as important. Combat, magic, and exploration give the campaign more substance than a collection of surprises. It remains a standout GameCube exclusive because it experiments with what a horror game can do to the player’s expectations. Avoid lists of its best tricks before playing.

16. Signalis
Release date: 27 2022年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Signalis wears its retro survival-horror influences openly, then uses them to build something emotionally and visually distinct. Elster explores a failing facility with limited inventory space, scarce ammunition, and puzzles that demand attention to documents and environmental clues. The compact rooms and angular characters work with, rather than against, its striking art direction. Beneath the practical survival decisions lies a story of memory, devotion, and uncertainty that resists easy answers. You do not need to solve every symbol to feel its impact. It is one of the strongest modern examples of familiar mechanics supporting a deeply unsettling new world.

15. Alan Wake 2
Release date: 27 2023年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
Alan Wake 2 pairs Saga Anderson’s investigation with Alan’s struggle inside a reality shaped by stories. That dual structure lets Remedy move between grounded detective work and stranger, theatrical horror without losing the human thread. Exploration, case-board deduction, and careful combat give the mystery a steady rhythm, while live-action material and striking audiovisual sequences make it unusually expressive. It is more demanding than the original and rewards attention to its details. Prior knowledge helps, but the immediate premise remains accessible. Few big-budget horror games are this willing to let their storytelling form become part of the nightmare.

14. Dead Space 2
Release date: 25 2011年1月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS3, Xbox 360
Dead Space 2 gives Isaac a voice and puts him inside a larger civilian disaster aboard the Sprawl. The sequel is faster and more spectacular, but it keeps the dismemberment combat and resource pressure that made the original work. Apartments, schools, transit routes, and medical spaces make the catastrophe feel disturbingly close to ordinary life. Its best sequences exploit the contrast between everyday environments and sudden violence. Not every scare is subtle, yet the campaign rarely loses momentum. This is an excellent pick if you want survival horror that can handle sustained action without surrendering its atmosphere.
Trailer: Official launch trailer.
13. Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake)
Release date: 24 2023年3月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, macOS, iOS; PS VR2 mode on PS5
The 2023 remake keeps Resident Evil 4’s encounter-driven structure while making movement, combat, and characterization feel more coherent. Leon can parry attacks, but that extra tool does not eliminate the pressure of managing crowds and ammunition. Ashley’s role is revised, supporting characters receive more attention, and the environments lean harder into decay and menace. It earns a separate place because its changes affect how the familiar journey plays, rather than simply polishing its textures. The original’s eccentric charm is still valuable; this version offers a more consistent survival-action balance and an excellent modern campaign.

12. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
Release date: 27 2003年11月
Platforms: PS2, Xbox; separate Wii reimagining and 2026 remake
Fatal Frame II places twin sisters Mio and Mayu in an abandoned village where the past refuses to stay buried. Your main defense is a camera, which means confronting ghosts directly and holding your nerve long enough to take an effective photograph. That simple idea gives every encounter an uncomfortable intimacy. The village’s ritual history gradually connects to the sisters’ relationship, making exploration feel emotionally charged rather than merely spooky. It is a quieter kind of survival horror than Resident Evil, but no less demanding. Of the original Fatal Frame games, this remains the most compelling all-round introduction.

11. Silent Hill 3
Release date: 23 2003年5月
Platforms: PS2, Windows PC; HD Collection on PS3 and Xbox 360
Heather’s trip through a shopping mall and beyond gives Silent Hill 3 a more immediate, abrasive energy than its predecessor. The sound design is aggressive, the environments seem almost diseased, and familiar places quickly become impossible to trust. It connects closely to the first Silent Hill, so playing that game first adds useful context without being necessary to appreciate the atmosphere. Heather is a particularly effective protagonist: frightened, irritated, and capable of pushing back without becoming invulnerable. The game’s disturbing imagery and tightly controlled mood make it one of the series’ essential entries.

10. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Release date: 24 2017年1月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Nintendo Switch 2; PS VR mode; Nintendo Switch Cloud Version
Resident Evil 7 brings the series into first person and makes one Louisiana household feel like the worst possible place to visit. The Baker family provides memorable personalities as well as threats, and the opening hours favor intimate spaces, pursuit, and uncertainty over spectacle. Later sections reconnect that fear to the franchise’s familiar weapons, puzzles, and resource management. The original PlayStation VR mode makes the close encounters especially intense, though the flat-screen version stands perfectly well on its own. It is a strong entry point for newcomers and a convincing reminder that Resident Evil can still reinvent its approach.

9. Silent Hill
Release date: 23 1999年2月
Platforms: PlayStation; PSone Classics rerelease on compatible PS3 and PSP systems
The first Silent Hill turns technological limitations into an unforgettable atmosphere. Fog and darkness narrow your view, the radio warns of something nearby, and the town repeatedly slips into a corroded version of itself. Harry Mason’s search for his missing daughter gives the strange imagery an immediate emotional purpose. Combat is clumsy in a way that suits an ordinary man trapped somewhere he does not understand. Its puzzles and camera work belong to another era, but the unease remains distinctive. This is the foundation of the series’ approach to psychological horror, and a landmark in its own right.

8. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Release date: 8 2010年9月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux; Amnesia Collection on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Amnesia: The Dark Descent understands that a monster can be scarier when fighting it is never an option. Daniel’s journey through Brennenburg Castle revolves around hiding, solving physical puzzles, and managing the urge to flee before you understand what is happening. Light is reassuring, but supplies are limited, and prolonged darkness feeds the sense that your character is coming apart. Its manipulation of sound and uncertain visibility influenced a generation of first-person horror. Some systems are easier to read today, yet the core experience remains wonderfully uncomfortable. It is a defining example of vulnerability doing the heavy lifting.

7. Dead Space (2008)
Release date: 13 2008年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS3, Xbox 360
The USG Ishimura is a dreadful workplace even before the necromorphs arrive. Dead Space turns its engineering decks, medical rooms, and industrial equipment into an interconnected trap, then gives Isaac tools that feel built for the job rather than borrowed from a military shooter. Cutting enemy limbs makes combat unusually deliberate. The health display on Isaac’s suit and the in-world interface help the fiction hold together while alarms and metallic noises keep you listening. It combines survival-horror resource management with a strong sense of physical place. The original’s harsh atmosphere still makes it worth experiencing alongside the remake.

6. Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Release date: 11 2005年1月
Platforms: GameCube, PS2, Wii, Windows PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch; distinct mobile and Quest VR adaptations
Leon’s rescue mission in rural Spain helped reshape third-person action, but Resident Evil 4 earns its horror credentials through relentless pressure. The opening village siege establishes a rhythm of crowded spaces, limited breathing room, and enemies who do more than shuffle toward your gun. Its inventory case, weapon upgrades, and carefully staged encounters make preparation satisfying. The tone cheerfully mixes grotesque monsters with outrageous one-liners, which gives the tension room to reset. It is less restrained than the early Resident Evil games, and that is part of the appeal: an action-horror adventure with remarkable pacing and personality.

5. SOMA
Release date: 22 2015年9月
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
SOMA asks disturbing questions about identity, consciousness, and what survival actually means. Its underwater facility provides the immediate danger: malfunctioning machines, empty rooms, and creatures you would rather avoid. The greater unease comes from conversations and discoveries that keep changing the meaning of your situation. Frictional uses exploration and environmental storytelling to make difficult ideas feel personal rather than abstract. If creature encounters get in the way, Safe Mode lets you concentrate on the story without removing the oppressive atmosphere. It is a superb choice for anyone who wants horror that leaves something to think about afterward.

4. Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake)
Release date: 25 2019年1月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, macOS, iOS; Nintendo Switch Cloud Version
Resident Evil 2’s remake finds an excellent balance between modern controls and old-school survival pressure. Leon and Claire explore a police station that gradually becomes a mental map of locked doors, shortcuts, and precious resources. The over-the-shoulder camera makes combat readable without making zombies feel disposable, and Mr. X adds a welcome reason to rethink a supposedly safe route. It is approachable enough for newcomers while retaining the inventory decisions and environmental puzzles that define the series. The original has its own place here, but this interpretation deserves separate recognition for the way it rebuilds the experience.

3. Alien: Isolation
Release date: 7 2014年10月
Platforms: Windows PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android
Amanda Ripley’s search for answers aboard Sevastopol becomes a prolonged lesson in hiding, listening, and making very careful choices. Alien: Isolation captures the industrial look of the original film without reducing its creature to a predictable shooting-gallery target. The motion tracker offers information, but checking it can distract you at exactly the wrong time. Human enemies and working joes complicate the route, while the alien remains the constant threat. Its long campaign occasionally stretches the tension thin, yet few games make a single enemy feel this convincing. Headphones make the station’s creaks and distant movement especially effective.

2. Resident Evil (2002 remake)
Release date: 22 2002年3月
Platforms: GameCube, Wii; HD Remaster on Windows PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
The Spencer Mansion is one of horror gaming’s great places to get lost, and the 2002 remake makes every return trip feel dangerous. It expands the original Resident Evil with new spaces, additional story material, and Crimson Heads that punish careless corpse management. Fixed camera angles turn familiar corridors into suspenseful compositions, while limited inventory space makes even a simple supply run a decision. The lavish backgrounds have aged beautifully. If you want to understand why keys, ink ribbons, and a locked door can generate more tension than a room full of monsters, start here.

1. Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Release date: 25 2001年9月
Platforms: PS2, Xbox, Windows PC; HD Collection on PS3 and Xbox 360
Silent Hill 2 turns a trip to a foggy town into a painfully personal nightmare. James Sunderland arrives after receiving a letter from his dead wife, and the creatures, environments, and encounters make that impossible invitation feel increasingly troubling. Its awkward combat reinforces vulnerability rather than stealing attention from the mystery. Akira Yamaoka’s music and the unsettling soundscape do extraordinary work, but the real achievement is how everything supports the characters. This is our number one because its horror stays with you long after the immediate scares fade. Go in knowing as little about the story as possible.

Which horror game should you play first?
If you want a balanced introduction to survival horror, Resident Evil 2 (2019) is a great place to start. For psychological storytelling, try SOMA or Silent Hill 2. If you prefer shorter, atmosphere-led adventures, Detention, Inside, and Mouthwashing make strong starting points. For a night with friends, Phasmophobia, Left 4 Dead 2, and The Outlast Trials each offer a different kind of shared panic.
The genre’s history goes further back than this countdown: 1992’s Alone in the Dark, for example, helped establish ideas that later survival-horror games developed. But whether you begin with a classic, a remake, or a strange little indie game, the important thing is finding the kind of horror that interests you. A frightening game is often at its best when curiosity keeps pulling you forward.
