W4 Games, the company building enterprise technology and support for the open-source Godot Engine, has raised $18 million in a Series B round led by Tencent and signed a multi-year strategic partnership with the Chinese games giant to scale the Godot ecosystem in Asia. The Dublin-based company announced the deal on 2026年8月25日, saying the round brings its total funding to $33 million.

Alongside Tencent, the round drew backing from OSS Capital, LUX, Naval Ravikant, and Tobias Lütke’s family office, per the company’s announcement. W4 Games says the money funds a 50% expansion of its international team, faster development of its enterprise offering, and what it describes as growing demand from enterprise developers using Godot.

The partnership goes beyond capital. Under the agreement, W4 Games and Tencent will work together to expand Godot’s reach among enterprises, studios, and developers in Asia, through go-to-market initiatives, localization, ecosystem support, advocacy, and market development for W4’s commercial technologies.

“This collaboration with Tencent marks an important next step for W4 Games as we expand globally and bring Godot to more studios and developers,” said Nicola Farronato, co-CEO of W4 Games. “With Tencent as both a strategic partner and an investor, we have an opportunity to accelerate the adoption of enterprise-ready Godot technologies, particularly in Asia, while continuing to strengthen the open-source ecosystem that sits at the heart of everything we do.”

W4 Games’ Path From Seed Round to Tencent-Led Series B

W4 Games was founded by core Godot developers and contributors, including Godot Engine creator Juan Linietsky, to bring Godot Engine to the enterprise market. Its commercial premise is that studios should get the freedom of an in-house engine without maintaining an in-house technology team — the company sells the tools, support, and services that let studios of any size ship on the free engine.

The Series A that followed brought the running total to the $15 million the Series B now extends to $33 million. Tencent’s arrival as lead investor changes the character of the cap table: the world’s largest games company by revenue is now both W4’s biggest strategic backer and its route into Asian markets.

Linietsky, Godot Engine’s creator and W4 Games’ founder, framed the deal around the engine’s enterprise ambitions in the announcement: “Over the past few years, Godot has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing game engine technologies, with W4 Games at the forefront of its adoption by major studios and enterprises. We’re excited to work with Tencent to build on the momentum and further establish Godot Engine as a leading platform for companies creating the next generation of video games.”

The company’s commercial work includes Godot console ports offered as approved middleware, alongside professional services, XR support, and premium enterprise support. Console SDK licensing keeps those targets out of the upstream engine, which is precisely where a commercial layer fits.

The Godot Adoption Figures Behind the Raise

The announcement leans on third-party data to make the case that Godot’s growth justifies enterprise investment:

  • Steam games built on Godot grew more than 50% year-on-year in both 2024 and 2025, according to SteamDB figures W4 cites.
  • Godot titles generating over $1 million in annual sales rose from two to more than 50 in the last three years, per W4’s own analysis of Gamalytic data.
  • Godot’s share of games submitted to events such as Global Game Jam and GMTK Game Jam grew from 10% to 50% since 2022.

The engine, known for its permissive MIT licence, has become the leading open-source alternative to proprietary engines over that period, with the company positioning its commercial products on top of a rapidly expanding developer community.

What the Partnership Means for the Godot Project

For the open-source project underneath the commercial layer, W4 Games says its contribution to Godot will keep growing alongside the enterprise business. Improvements developed through work with enterprise customers are contributed upstream to the engine wherever possible, so advances built for individual studios flow back to the wider developer community rather than staying behind a services contract.

The next concrete steps sit inside the deal’s own commitments: a workforce expanded by half, an accelerated enterprise roadmap, and joint go-to-market activity across Asia with the region’s largest games company now attached to the Godot ecosystem as partner and investor.
