When you say you are “going to Las Vegas”, you may be factually wrong. The Las Vegas Strip casinos sit just outside the borders of the city and this is the main highlight for the ~40 million annual visitors who come to Vegas. Las Vegas has over 150,000 hotel rooms and an average occupancy rate of >80%, and it makes a strong case to make anyone’s bucket list. But the Vegas Strip is actually located in the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester.

Clark County is the regional government body that is made up of the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas, as well as many unincorporated areas. If we are analyzing the local casino markets, then it is the areas like:

• Boulder Strip
• Laughlin
• the Balance of Clark County
• Henderson

That’s where most of the locals’ casinos are located. The Clark County Las Vegas Strip Area has 57 gambling venues according to recent monthly reports, including the mega casino resorts down to slots-only stations and motels. This is a 4.2 mile stretch along Las Vegas Boulevard, starting from Sahara Avenue until Russell Road – near to where you will see the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.

Historical Context of Neighborhood Casinos

Las Vegas was founded in 1900 and originally it was just a railroad town, an important stop between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Only 20+ people lived in Vegas before the township was founded. By the 1920 it expanded to 2,304 and by 1930 it was just 5,165. The population of the Las Vegas metropolitan area now is 2.4+ million – you wouldn’t have guessed it was some remote Mormon fort in the Mojave Desert 100 years ago. This is a very good example for how Las Vegas seemingly came out of nowhere.

In 1931 two very important things happened in the history of Las Vegas. Construction on the Boulder Dam began (now called the Hoover Dam), and Nevada legalized wide-open gambling. The former brought thousands of workers to Southern Nevada, including Vegas, and the legalization of gambling enabled businessmen to open up the first, small casinos around Fremont Street.

By the 1940s and 50s, this had picked up and properties like El Rancho, the Last Frontier, and Flamingo established the Strip. But Vegas was also creating a reputation for its mobster-driven growth and attracting some of Hollywood’s largest stars like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra – tying the gambling to the Silver Screen and emerging celebrity culture in America. The really impressive infrastructural changes came in the 1990s, when mega resorts became all the rage, and this has very much shaped the Vegas Strip as we know it today.

But throughout this, the city of Las Vegas flourished, both in population and in economy (outside gambling, that is). Those original casinos, which were made to entertain the thousands of railroad and later dam-building workers, are deeply rooted in the local fabric. And many operators continue to serve locals with humbler gaming venues.

The Locals Casino Experience

It is perhaps lazy to describe the locals market as “everything that the Strip is NOT”, but it is a pretty fair description. These venues target repeat customers and long-term gamers in the area. They can also have amenities, but these aren’t massive wellness centres, celebrity chef or Michelin starred eateries, thousand seater theaters or stadiums, or any of the haute couture fashion boutiques you would find in Vegas Strip casinos. Instead, they can have smaller restaurants or bistros, bowling, bingo rooms, and amenities designed for locals.

Instead of thousands of slot machines and high stakes table games, you get less sensory overload with fewer slot aisles, and tables where the dealer may remember your name next time you come in. That is not to say that local casinos cannot be big themselves; there are clubs that can have hundreds of slots. But another aspect of these venues is that they tend to have more options for the casuals or lower-budget gamers. And, without giving the wrong impression here – it is said that the locals casinos can have more favorable game rules with potentially lower house edge. But this can vary from venue to venue, and shouldn’t be taken as a straight up fact.

Main Players in the Locals Casino Market

There are local, family run casinos, including standalone and smaller chains. But this is still Vegas, so don’t liken them to impromptu Californian card rooms, truck stop slots arcades or the 24/7 adult gaming centers in the UK (not a euphemism, they just supply slots). Caesars, Wynn, MGM Resorts and Genting aren’t really involved at this level, at least not in their Vegas portfolios. The local’s casino market in Vegas has two major names, Red Rock Resorts and Boyd Gaming.

Red Rock Resorts runs the Station Casinos, the Seventy Six Taverns, and Wildfire Gaming brands, which have plenty of localized gaming venues. The parent company also has bigger resorts, including Green Valley Resort,  Red Rock Resort Casino & Spa, and Durango Casino & Resort, and quite cleverly they are all linked by the same loyalty program, my|Rewards Boarding Pass.

Boyd Gaming has 10 properties across Las Vegas, including various local casinos but also main downtown venues like California Hotel & Casino, Fremont Hotel & Casino and Main Street Station. But the venues like Aliante, Cannery, Gold Coast and Sam’s Town are pretty localized and give you a taste of the local gaming experience. Boyd Gaming also has properties in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Sector’s Growth Figures

The analysis at the start of the year was highly positive for these operators. The Nevada Gaming Control Board does not separate local casinos from its revenue reports, but it breaks down the commercial gaming revenue by area. The Nevada Gaming Control Board released the Calendar Year 2025 figures in January, which was one of the most difficult years for Vegas, with its lowest number of visitors in 4 years and the Strip gaming revenue rising less than 1%.

And expert analysis backed this up: when there is economic trouble or slowing down, the Strip casinos get hurt more than the local’s casinos. John DeCree, the director of equity research for CBRE Group Inc. stated that local casinos tend to have better recoveries during economic downturns, having decoupled from the Strip with a more diversified economy and a more favorable supply-demand balance.

The major Las Vegas Strip properties are after high-value customers, business delegations and people who are after VIP experiences. Many of the bigger companies have upgraded their VIP programs recently to provide further perks for these high value customers. But it is not as sustainable as the operators targeting repeat customers, who may not spend massive amounts but can provide frequent business. These aren’t the customers who may come for a week twice a year, or only head to the casino when a big event comes around. They are the ones who may hit the slots or blackjack on a Tuesday night, or make a weekly ritual with friends to hit the gaming machines.

So ultimately, while the figures still show that the locals’ market is billions of dollars behind the Strip, it is still a very strong business, with confident growth signals. It may not be what most travelers head to Vegas for, you won’t have as many selfies in front of the local slots-brewery tavern as you would in front of MGM Grand or Caesars Palace. But for a more genuine and lower entry gaming experience, these are really quite an intriguing contrast for Vegas’ gaming pilgrims.
